Ships have been propelled and maneuvered by electrical drives since trle late seventies. Recently, rare earth PMs allow the design of brushless motors with very high efficiency over a wide speed range. This is the most important factor in ship propulsion technology. Several types PM motors have been developing for ship propulsion system. However these have disadvantage such as cogging torque. It causes an undesired effect that contributes to output ripple, vibration, and noise of machine. Therefore several techniques may be adopted in designing PM motor in order to reduce the cogging torque. This paper describes cogging torque receding methods such as adjusting arigap length, magnet arc, and magnet thickness. That are analysed by using the finite element method(FEM) and the maxwell stress tensor method.

A top priority in the design of underwater vehicle is to guarantee the dependability of the electric system because failure of the electrical power supply system is directly related to the life of the passengers. In this paper, we present four kinds of alternative designs to improve reliability of electrical system in underwater vehicle. To reduce the risk and to increase availability of the electrical system, we use the redundancy of the grid structure and power converter. For all design alternatives, we carry out Fault Tree Analysis. Based on the FTA result, we implement RAM simulation to compare the risk and availability for the proposed design alternatives.

In this paper, we deal with a risk analysis for an IPS (Integrated power system) and propose a simulation model combining the fault tree and event tree in order to estimate the system availability and risk level, together. Firstly, the basic information such as operational scenarios, physical structure, safety systems is explained in order to make the fault tree and event tree of the IPS. Next, we propose a discrete-event simulation model using a next-event time advance technique to advance the simulation time. Also the state transition and activity diagrams are explained to represent the relationship between the objects. By numerical examples, the redundancy allocation is considered in order to decrease the risk level of the IPS.

This paper propose a new active common-mode voltage damper circuit that is capable of suppressing a common-mode voltage produced in the PWM VSI. The new active common mode voltage damper is consisted of a half-bridge inverter and a common mode transformer with a blocking capacitor. Principle of the active common mode damper is as follow, by applying the compensation voltage which has the same amplitude and opposite polarity to the PWM inverter system. So, common mode voltage and high frequency leakage current can be reduced Simulated and experimental results show that common-mode voltage damper makes contributions to reducing a high frequency leakage current and common-mode voltage.

In this paper, we analyze the current submarine cooling system and study control algorithms for pumps, valves and configuration of submarine cooling system to improve the thermal stability and efficiency of cooling system. We provide simulation results for the submarine cooling system.

The paper examines the propulsion motor journal bearing using the experiment method which, based on an ARMD(Advanced Rotating Machinery Dynamics) S/W and a similitude design method. The bearings were insulated electrically and have a low thermal conductivity of an epoxy plate structure consist of a 2 to 4 ㎜ thickness deposited over each connection part. This design was compared to other conventional design structure with an available low cost material. The temperature results were satisfied comparing to the previous journal bearing. Excellent lubricating characteristics of oil films, partially due to the use of the enhanced oil lift system. Industrial repair and convenient maintenance of this journal bearing is also possible by applying to half separation assembly structure.

This paper describes independent 6-phase BLDC motor which has a characteristic among BLDC motor used for electric propulsion system. Independent 6-phase BLDC motor has characteristics that phases of stator is independent electrically with each other and the phase of stator has more than 3 phases. We conducted simulation on independent 3-phase BLDC motor to analyze a characteristic of 6-phase BLDC motor. It is found that independent 3-phase BLDC motor has lower current pulsation and more stability in emergency situation than independent 6-phase BLDC motor.

Permanent magnet(PM) motors many attractive relevant to large-scale motors, Including high power density and efficiency. Noise sources of PM motor are broadly categorized as magnetic, mechanical, electronic and aerodynamic. Successful design of PM motors for reduced radiation noise must consider both structural vibration of the magnetic source terms and mechanical source terms. In this paper, after electronic excitation sources of PM motors define, introduced the structureborne noise influenced by the inductance change of Propulsion Motor for Marine.
