The effect of IN738 additive powder on microstructure and mechanical properties of the wide-gap region brazed with BNi-3 filler metal powder was investigated. The wide-gap brazing was conducted in a vacuum of $2\times10^{-5}torr\;at\;1200^{\circ}C$ with various powder mixing ratios of additive to filler powders. The microstructures of the wide-gap brazed region were analyzed by SEM and AES. The region brazed with only BNi-3 filler metal powder had a microstructure consisted of proeutectic, binary eutectic and ternary eutectic structure, while that brazed with a mixture of IN738 additive powder and BNi-3 filler metal powder had a microstructure consisted of IN738 additive powder, binary eutectic of $Ni_3B-Ni$ solid solution and (Cr, W)B. The fracture strength of the wide-gap brazed region was about 680 MPa regardless of the additive powder mixing ratios. Cracks were initiated at the (Cr, W)B and binary eutectic of $Ni_3B-Ni$ solid solution, and propagated through them in the wide-gap brazed region, which lowered the fracture strength of the region.

Artificial aging was performed to simulate the microstructural degradation in cobalt base superalloy, FSX414, caused by long time exposure to high temperature. Microstructural changes such as Cr depletion in surface layer, carbide coarsening, and formation of oxide particles and voids with aging time were investigated by OM, SEM, EPMA, XRD analysis. The Cr depletion layer increased with aging time in the beginning and then saturated. The oxide particles and voids in Cr depletion layer were founded to increas with increasing aging time.

N/A The microstructural changes with pearlite formation heat treatment in eutectoid steel(railway steel) consisting of only pearlite structure were evaluated by the ultrasonic attenuation and velocity measurements. The result of this investigation showed a strong linear dependence of ultrasonic attenuation on pearlite interlamellar spacing, and accordingly on fracture strength of the pearlite.

One of the major reasons for utilizing Zr-base alloys in nuclear reactors is its good resistance to creep. Tension and creep deformation behaviors of Zr-1Nb-1Sn-0.1Fe alloy (0%Mo alloy) and Zr-1Nb-1Sn-0.1Fe-0.5Mo (0.5%Mo alloy) were evaluated to investigate the effect of Mo addition on mechanical properties and anisotropy. The addition of Mo increased the tensile strength through solid solution hardening. Room and high temperature tensile strength of TD(transverse direction) specimens were higher than those of RD(rolling direction) specimens. The TD specimen of 0.5Mo alloy showed higher elongation at room temperature than the RD specimen due to lattice rotation resulted from twin deformation. The stress exponent, n, obtained in creep test lied between 2.3 and 4.5 in both RD and TD specimens and the viscous glide was the predominant mechanism in creep deformation. The 0.5%Mo alloy showed higher creep resistance than the one without Mo.
