Propulsion shafting systems having two or more prime movers connected in a single shaft for propulsion power have operating advantage compared with other propulsion shafting designs. This includes by being able to distribute power more efficiently and in cases of emergencies such as one prime mover breakdown, the vessel can still navigate safely. Taking into account installation space, this propulsion shafting system is primarily applied on special purpose vessels and in some motor craft. Flexible coupling are normally employed to dissipate unwanted resonances and shaft misalignment. As such, the flexible coupling dynamic behavior must be verified during operation to ensure function and reliability. In this paper, a flexible coupling model was applied on a fishery inspection vessel with a twin-engine single-propeller propulsion system to confirm its dynamic behavior and the results are presented herein.
