Background/Aims: Currently, the role of liver transplantation in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with cirrhosis is controversial. What remain to be determined are the best treatment protocol and who are likely to have a good outcome after liver transplantation. Methods: Twenty-five patients with hepatocellular carcinoma underwent liver transplantation between 1993 and 2001 at the Department of Surgery, Catholic University of Korea. The follow-up period was from one month to 51 months. The pathologic findings, the recurrence, and survival of the 25 cases were analyzed. Results: Two patients had a tumor larger than 5 cm in diameter and three patient had above 3 nodules in number. Five patients had bilobar tumors. Vascular invasion was present in 11 patients (45.8%). Among the 25 patients, postsurgical TNM staging was stage III in 3 patients, stage IVA in 5 patients, and stage IVB in 1 patient. Number of high risk patients were 16 (64%). During follow-up, 23 of the 25 patients (92%) were alive and the number of disease-free survivals was 21 among the 23 patients (91.3%). Conclusions: According to our small experience, HCC can be a good indication of liver transplantation, especially in low risk patients and even in the recurrent cases. A long-term survival can be achieved by aggressive treatment. However, the best protocol remains to be determined, especially for the case with large tumors. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2003;42:42-49)

영상 융합은 특징이 다른 두 개 이상의 영상에 대하여 각 영상의 특징을 모두 갖는 하나의 영상으로 재구성하는 기술로 의료 분야, 군사 분야, 원격 탐사 분야 등 여러 분야에 활용되고 있다. 지금까지 웨이블렛 기반 영상 융합은 주로 이산 웨이블렛 변환 하에서 고주파 영역에서는 표준편차와 같은 액티비티(activity) 측도를 사용하고 저주파 영역에서는 두 영상의 픽셀값의 평균을 취함으로써 이루어져 왔다. 그러나, 이산 웨이블렛 변환은 이동불변(translation-invariance)하지 않으므로 융합 영상에 블록 인공물이 생기곤 한다. 본 논문에서는 이산 웨이블렛 변환의 단점을 보완한 정상 웨이블렛 변환을 이용하여 고주파 영역에서는 영상 특징에 민감하지 않은 사분위수 범위를 사용하고 저주파 영역에서는 고주파 영역의 사분위수 범위 정보를 이용하여 영상을 융합하고자 한다. 영상 실험 결과, 제안된 방법은 정성적이고 정량적인 평가에서 입력 영상의 종류에 관계없이 로버스트한 결과를 낳음을 알 수 있었다. Image fusion is the process of combining information from two or more source images of a scene into a single composite image with application to many fields, such as remote sensing, computer vision, robotics, medical imaging and defense. The most common wavelet-based fusion is discrete wavelet transform fusion in which the high frequency sub-bands and low frequency sub-bands are combined on activity measures of local windows such standard deviation and mean, respectively. However, discrete wavelet transform is not translation-invariant and it often yields block artifacts in a fused image. In this paper, we propose a robust image fusion based on the stationary wavelet transform to overcome the drawback of discrete wavelet transform. We use the activity measure of interquartile range as the robust estimator of variance in high frequency sub-bands and combine the low frequency sub-band based on the interquartile range information present in the high frequency sub-bands. We evaluate our proposed method quantitatively and qualitatively for image fusion, and compare it to some existing fusion methods. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is more effective and can provide satisfactory fusion results.

This paper describes the design for a defective product inspection device for the curved glass used in smart-phone. Cameras are used as inspection devices to find cracks in LCDs (Liquid Crystal Displays), PDPs (Plasma Display Panels), etc. The devices used to inspect the curved glass used in smart-phone consist of a camera, two back-light apparatus, an inspection apparatus main body, and an image processing program. Camera image calibration was performed to smooth an image taken with the camera, and as a result, the average error was less than 0.12 pixels. And the image of a smart-phone's curved glass taken with the camera was processed using the produced program. As a result, the program could correctly extract the cracks on the curved glass. Thus, it is thought that the designed inspection device can successful detect cracks in curved tempered glass.

This paper describes the design of a force applying system for a smart phone curved glass molding system and its characteristic test. The force applying system is composed of a motor and gear, a rectilinear movement structure, a force sensor, an LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) sensor, an up and down moving block, and so on. The system precisely controls the applying force and time to the plane glass because the glass can be easily destroyed under applied force, and can be bent imperfectly. As a result of the characteristic test, the curved glass can be manufactured using this system, and the holding time under 0N force, the applying force to the plane glass, the time for applying from 0N to maximum force, and the holding time under maximum force at the manufacture feasible temperature 620℃ were found.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to investigate opinions and experiences of hospital CEOs' and QI managers toward the National Hospital Evaluation Program which was implemented in 2004 and to recommend various strategies to improve the program. Methods: We conducted a mail survey with CEOs and QI managers' of 78 hospitals with 500 beds or more that participated the 2004 National Hospital Evaluation Program. Results: About 70.8% of the participating CEOs and 64.0% of the QI managers felt that the objectives of the evaluation program weren't fully achieved. Most respondents said that the current program required a partial or an overall change. Evaluation Criteria was the most often cited area for a change. Many respondents pointed out the importance of including clinical quality indicators in the evaluation tool. Conclusions: To upgrade hospital services with better quality, it is most important to first reach consensus on objectives and approaches of the evaluation program among various players. For a consistent planning and implementation, it is urgent to set up a more systematic organization and financing mechanism. Also, evaluation approaches, including evaluation criteria, methods, patient satisfaction assessment, as well as ways to summarize and publicize each hospital's performance should be improved.
