        박양구 漢城大學校 1986 論文集 Vol.10 No.1

In English there are two kinds of possibility, one expressed by 'can' and the other expressed by 'may' The former is to stress the actual existence of a possibility, that is, what possibility actually exists, and signifies 'It is possible for someone or something to V', whereas the latter is to stress the possible existence of an actuality, that is, what actuality possibly exists and signifies 'It is possible that someone or something dose V' In other words, the actual existence of a possibility indicates what is capable of being so, and the possible existence of an actuality, what is likely to be so. And the former possibility is called the theoretical possibility and the latter possibility the factual possibility. Both kinds of possibility are implied by actuality, but neither possibility implies non-actuality. There is no necessity that something is so, but only the necessity - like the possibility expressed by 'can' - that something should be so or for it to be so. And necessity can be either prospective or retrospective. Thus a particular condition may be necessary for a particular result and a particular result necessary because of a particular condition. However, necessity, whether prospective or retrospective, is relative. It means that it is impossible under the conditions for there to be anything else, that is, the only possibility. 'Must' conceals an interesting and important difference between the subjunctive-governing use and the indicative-governing use. The forme5r indicates that is must be that something should be so, e.g. 'He must stop doing that', whereas the latter that it must be that something is so, e.g. 'He must be in the room', Thus the subjunctive is neutral about whether what must be is already so, whereas the indicative implies that what must be is so.

        1) Parallel operation : The parallel operation having a different capacity brings about a head loss due to the reverse flow of the unbalance in pressure between two pumps at some condition. So it should be operated in the careful consideration of frictional head loss and pump's head capacity to operate in parallel operation. But it can be obtained from this study that the capacity of small pump is equal to that of large pump and the performance of parallel operation is Tmproved. And therefore, it could be otained the optimum operation at Case Ⅶ (N_L = 2,000, N_s = 000) and Case Ⅷ(N_L = 2,000, N_s = 2,500) in parallel operation. 2) Series operation : The series operation having a different capacity brings about a head loss at some condition due to the flow limit of small pump. And it can be obtained from this study that the capacity of small pump is approachaed to large pump and the performance of series operation is Tmproved. And therefore it can be obtained the optimum operation at Cast I (N_L =3,000, N_s = 3,000), Case Ⅳ (N_L = 2,500, N_s = 3,000), Case Ⅶ(N_L = 2,000, N_s = 3,000) in series operation.
