We evaluated the anti-wrinkle effects of Impatiens textori methanol extract (ITME). ITME treatment at 10 mg/mL decreased collagenase and elastase activity by 50.4% and 54.9%, respectively. In tests of human dermal fibroblast cytotoxicity, the maximum permissible level of ITME treatment was greater than 200 μg/mL. When compared to a control: i) treatment with 200 μg/mL of ITME significantly increased type I procollagen synthesis by 36.7% (p<0.05), and ii) treatment with 100 μg/mL ITME significantly decreased MMP-1 mRNA and protein expression by 23.1% and 35.3%, respectively (p< 0.01). Treatment with ITME resulted in a promotion of collagen synthesis and inhibition of collagen degradation in human dermal fibroblasts. Collectively, these results suggest that ITME could be used as functional cosmetic material to prevent or alleviate skin wrinkles induced by ultraviolet rays.

Various forms of cosmetics have been studied in order to increase the skin penetration rate of active ingredients. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) that can continuously release an active ingredient for many days by encapsulating a drug in polymer nanoparticles were prepared and analyzed to determine encapsulation efficiency by: 1) the type and quantity of surfactant, 2) agitation speed, and 3) dispersion temperature. To prepare SLNs encapsulating tocopheryl acetate, the concentration of stearic acid was fixed to 1 wt%, the concentrations of surfactants (Tween 20 and Tween 80) studied were 1, 4, and 10 wt%, the agitation speeds tested were 1,000 rpm and 2,000 rpm, and the dispersion temperatures used were 4℃ and 25℃. The 1 wt% Tween 20, along with 1 wt% and 4 wt% Tween 80 SLNs showed standardized granular shapes, and 1 wt% Tween 80 SLN at 4℃ and 2,000 rpm showed the smallest particle size of 303 nm. The zeta potential in all SLNs produced ranged from -20.4 mV to -39.3 mV, showing a high degree of stability, while 4 wt% Tween 80 SLN at 4℃ and 2,000 rpm showed the highest encapsulation efficiency of 80.8%. Therefore, it is confirmed that both the type of surfactant used and the dispersion temperature, along with the mix ratio of lipid and surfactant are important factors for the production of SLNs with high skin absorption rates.

In this study, the anti-melanogenic effects of Impatiens textori methanol extract (ITME) were evaluated. Using a cytotoxicity test, we determined that the maximum permissible level of ITME application to melan-a cells was over 200 μg/mL. ITME decreased melanin synthesis and melanocyte dendricity in a dose-dependent manner. When compared to a control, ITME treatment at 100 μg/mL significantly decreased melanin content and intracellular tyrosinase activity by 19.1% (p<0.05) and 8.4% (p<0.01), respectively. Treatment with 100 μg/mL of ITME significantly decreased tyrosinase mRNA and protein expression by 17.2% (p<0.05) and 22.0% (p<0.01), respectively. These results suggest that ITME has a fairly good skin-whitening activity in melan-a cells via inhibition of tyrosinase at the transcriptional level.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the utility of Impatiens textori methanol extract (ITME) as an antioxidant and natural preservative for cosmetics. Total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents in ITME were 193.8 and 146.8 mg/g, respectively. The electron-donating ability of ITME at the concentration of 1,000 μg/mL was 50.4%. These findings indicate that ITME has excellent antioxidant activity. The minimal inhibitory concentration values of ITME against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were 3%, 1.5%, and 1.5%, respectively. Collectively, these results suggest that ITME might be used in cosmetics as an antioxidant and as a natural preservative.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of Tradescantia reflexa methanol extract (TRME) on collagen synthesis and the inhibition of collagen degradation in human dermal fibroblasts. Total polyphenolics and flavonoids in the TRME were 148.3 mg/g and 95 mg/g, respectively. At concentration of 1,000 μg/mL, the electron donating ability of TRME was 10.3%. Collagenase and elastase inhibition of TRME at 10 mg/mL was 82.5% and 49.8%, respectively. As determined with a 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay, the maximum permissible level for treating human dermal fibroblasts with TRME was shown to be over 200 μg/mL. In comparison with the control, TRME at 200 μg/mL significantly (p/0.01) increased type I procollagen synthesis by 58.9%, while TRME at 200 μg/mL significantly (p/0.01) decreased matrix metalloproteinase-1 mRNA expression by 49.1%. These results suggested that TRME had very low toxicity in human dermal fibroblasts, and had high efficacy on the stimulation of collagen synthesis and the inhibition of collagen degradation in human dermal fibroblasts. Therefore, TRME may be used as a functional cosmetic material for the prevention or alleviation of skin-wrinkle formation induced by ultraviolet rays.
