This study was conducted to estimate the heritabilities and genetic correlations among postweaning traits in swine. The heritabilities estimated were 0.270 for daily gain, 0.350 for feed requirement, 0.272 for backfat thickness, 0.887 for days to 90㎏ and 0.565 for selection index. The genetic correlations of daily gain with feed requirement, backfat thickness, days to 90㎏ and selection index were -0.552, 0.107, -0.903, 0.716, and feed requirement with backfat thickness, days to 90㎏ and selection index were -0.058, 0.099, -0.942, and backfat thickness with days to 90㎏ and selection index were -0.237, -0.025, respectively.

This study was conducted to determine the main effects of breed, farrowing year, season, parity and generation on gestation length, litter size at birth, and pig weight at birth, 21 days and weaning in swine. The least square means were estimated on the basis of the data obtained from 1,728 litters of Landrace, Large Yorkshire, Hampshire., and Duroc breeds raised at National Animal Breeding Institute from 1975 to 1980. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Large Yorkshire and Duroc were superior in Utter size at birth and Landrace was heavier in the preweaing weight than in the other breeds. 2. The effect of breed for the little size at birth and pig weight at birth, 21 days and weaning was highly significant at 1% level. 3. The effect of farrowing year on the litter size and pig weight at birth was significant at 5% level and there was highly significant difference at 1% level for pig weight at 21 days and weaning. 4. The effect of farrowing season was highly significant at 1% level for pig weight at 21 days and weaning. 5. The effect of parity was highly significant at 1% level for all traits studied except gestation length. The litter size at birth was superior in the groups of the 5th to 6th parity than in the other groups and pig weight at weaning was heavier in the groups of the 2nd to 4th parity than in the other groups. 6. The effect of generation was significant at 5% level for pig weight at birth and was highly significant at 1% level for pig weight at 21 days and weaning.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of castration on growth, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics of pigs castrated at 3 different ages of one-day, seven-day and one-month, which were compared to intact pigs. Each treatment group had 16 pigs and the results obtained from this experiment with 64 pigs were summarized as follows: Boars with average daily gain of 0.870㎏ grew faster than any other barrow groups during the period of 20-110㎏. The back fat thickness; at 110㎏ live weight was significantly lower(P$lt; 0.05) in boars than barrows and the average back fat thicknesses of intact boars, and barrows castrated at the ages of one-day, seven-day and one-month were 2.23, 2.67, 3.05 and 2.83cm, respectively. Castration treatments seemed to improve carcass quality grade based on the results of this study. Castration done at the early age is considered to be better to improve growth, carcass quality and to save labor for castration.
