The aim of this review is to investigate clinical studies on oriental medicine treatment for obesity in Korean literature and to propose for the better method of clinical studies in order to seek more effective treatment. Electric searches were performed with NDSL, National assembly library, RISS4U, DBPIA, KISS, KMBASE, KoreaMed, Korean traditional knowledge portal and Oasis. Also, 21 major journals associated with oriental medicine in Korea were searched manually. Eighty three studies were included and analyzed in terms of study design, subjects, interventions, results and evaluation of safety. The numbers of controlled, non-controlled and case studies are respectively 26(31%), 43(52%) and 14(17%). Studies using sample size less than 30 accounts for 49% and studies using subjects diagnosed as obese or overweight by specific criteria were 35(42%). Studies which used more than 2 interventions or co-interventions were 76%. Clinical studies which used single herbal medicine were few and clinically studied single herbal medicine were limited to ephedra. More than half of 83 studies were studied for 8 weeks and less. 12% of 69 studies(except case studies) were not statistically analyzed and studies which evaluated safety of intervention were 22(27%) and reported adverse events were 9(11%). To improve the quality of clinical studies on oriental medicine treatment for obesity, studies need to use restricted number of interventions and subjects need to specifically diagnosed as overweight or obese. In addition, various kinds of single herbs need to be clinically studied based on experimental studies and herbalogy.

In Shuowen Jiezi, there are cases where the title letter reappears in the description of itself. If we regard Shuowen Jiezi as a dictionary explaining the meaning of the letters, this phenomenon is unreasonable and inappropriate. However, Xushen’s purpose of writing Shuowen Jiezi was not limited to explain the meaning of single letters. He had the intention of organizing a meta-commentary and text commentary that correctly interprets the characters that appeared in main classics during Later Han Dynasty, especially Shi詩 Shu書 Yi易 Li禮 Chunqiu春秋. Considering the purpose of writing Shuowen Jiezi by Xushen, it is possible to grasp the characteristics of this text not only as a dictionary but also as a commentary on the classics. The analysis of “circular definition” in Shuowen Jiezi reveals these characteristics of this text more clearly. This paper first compared the characteristics of Shuowen Jiezi and Er Ya, which were written under a specific academic background at the time, and examined the characteristics of “circular definition” by classifying and analyzing the aspects of “circular definition” seen in Shuowen Jiezi.

베트남 이주여성의 사상체질별 수면상태, 수면시간 및 삶의 질 비교연구

The purpose of this study was to find out how sleep characteristics by Sasang constitution (SC) appear in Vietnamese immigrant women in Korea, and how sleep aberration by SC affected the quality of life. The number of 217 Vietnamese immigrant women joined this study. We surveyed SC with Korea Sasang Constitutional Diagnostic Questionnaire (KS-15) and sleep characteristics with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI) questionnaire. We evaluated quality of life(QoL) with Euro Quality of Life-5Dimension(EQ 5D) questionnaire. A Chi-square test and a one-way ANOVA test were conducted according to SC, and T test also used to compare PSQI groups. Significant p was .05. The number(rate) of Taeeumin(TE), Soeumin(SE), and Soyangin(SY) were 40(18.4%), 55(25.3%), and 122(56.2%) respectively. The distribution of obstructive factors of sleep were significantly different according to SC(Too Cold in Sleeping, x =13.378, p=.037, Too Hot in Sleeping x<sup>2</sup>=12.834, p=.046). The distribution of daytime drowsiness(x<sup>2</sup>=15.379, p=.018) and falling concentration power (x<sup>2</sup>=17.533, p=.008) was significantly different according to SC. The sleep status of the subjects showed a significant negative correlation with the EQ 5D Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) (r =-.399, p<.001), and the EQ 5D Index (r=-.211, p=.002). In the EQ VAS, TE showed a difference between the good and bad sleeping groups (t=3.955, p<.001). SE showed a difference between the two groups in the EQ 5D Index (t=2.332, p=.037). SY did not show a difference between the two groups. This study reveals that sleeping is closely related with QoL and distribution of obstructive factors of sleep may be different according to SC. Further study to confirm the constitutional difference in race at Vietnam is needed.

On Regis’ Latin Translation of Y-King

This paper aims at replying to the question of how did Regis understand and translate and annotate Ye-Kim. Grosso modo, Regis’ understanding of Ye-Kim is characterized with figurism and eclecticism. As for figurism, the paper provided some textual evidences of Bouvet, a founder of the figurism. The paper demonstrated also some testimonies for demonstrating the eclectical feature of Regis’ interpretation. Interestingly to see, this eclectical feature that are observed in Regis’ commentaries requires an urgent but academically strict views.
