버지니아 울프의 『댈러웨이 부인』에 나타난 분열된 여성의식

This study aims to shed new light from the feminine perspective on the novels of Virginia Woolf whose works explore feminine experiences, consciousness as well as feminine values. Claiming that the task of the modern novelists is exploration into the darkness of feminine consciousness, Woolf divulges the feminine world by exploring human consciousness in her novels. Through the suppressed desire and conflicting consciousness of the heroine Clarissa Dalloway in Mrs. Dalloway, Woolf shows that androcentric social norm suppresses not only women but also makes them suffer from the internalization of the masculine social norm. Through the male character such as Septimus Smith who protests against masculinity and who reveals abnormality, Woolf shows in the novel that the male is also subject to suffering from conflict. Instead of resolving social conflict and inconsistency, Woolf visualizes the destructive aspect of the male centered imperial ideology and de-constructs the absoluteness of hegemonic discourse by representing seceders from the normalcy of contemporary society.

Between the Acts, the final novel published shortly after Woolf’s suicide in 1941, reveals the tired inner voice of Isabella Oliver whose age of thirty-nine symbolizes the age of the century just before the Second World War in 1939. This novel shows that the patriarchal society of violence and suppression operates as a mechanism of fascism and a cause of the Second World War. Thus, Woolf presents Isa as a character with potentials of resistance because she has a mature sense of reality, poetic sensibilities as well as sympathy for the others. She also suggests a possibility of equality in the relationship between man and woman through Isa who does not acquiesce in violent masculine heroism. Through a pageant, a historical play, written by Miss. La Trobe, Woolf subverts the values of patriarchal society by parodying English history in the novel. Moreover, Woolf moves on to criticize English civilization poignantly from the past to the present through a new drama by La Trobe, while opening up a possibility for a new social vision.

This paper aims to shed a new light from the feminine perspective on the life and desire of feminine characters who exist as merely private and anonymous beings. In the novel, To the Lighthouse (1927), Virginia Woolf shows the artificiality and destructiveness of the sexual role imposed upon men and women in the Victorian period through the marital state of Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay. From the multiple inner points of view, Woolf stresses that the Ramsays are not fixed characters with unique qualities. She also gives salience to the fact that each of them lives as a domestic angel or a male careerist while both are losing their own selves bound by an ideal social vision. As a result, the English society imposing the strict sexual role works itself as a mechanism suppressing the inner mind. Thus, the androgynous vision that Lily Briscoe embodies rejects the sacrificial and passive femininity and aspires for the true relationship freed from the artificial gender identity.

버지니아 울프(Virginia Woolf)는 자신의 소설들을 통해 주로 자아와 타자, 친밀감과 거리감, 소통과 소외의 문제에 천착해 왔다. 본 연구에서 대상으로 삼은 『막간』(Between the Acts, 1941)은 그녀의 유작으로서 세계대전 직전의 영국사회에 나타난 타자에 대한 인식의 근본적인 변화들을 주제로 다루고 있다. 타인을 완전히 이해하고 알 수 있다는 가능성에 대한 위기감과 회의 그리고 그로 인한 의사소통의 실패는 모더니스트 예술가들의 작품에 나타나는 특징으로 친숙하게 느껴지기도 하나 『막간』에서는 타인과의 사이에 벌어진 이러한 틈이 모더니즘의 윤리학을 정의해 주는 타인과의 만남으로 강조되고 있다. 이것은 절대적 타자와의 만남과 그 책임을 강조하는 에마누엘 레비나스(Emmanuel Levinas) 사상과 일맥상통하는 것으로 본 연구에서는 이 소설에 얽혀있는 전쟁, 죽음, 타인에 대한 공감의 문제들을 레비나스의 사유와 함께 인식론적, 윤리적, 정치적 틀에서 새롭게 독해해 보고자 한다. 이러한 시도는 울프의 소설 『막간』에 나타난 타자 철학의 성격을 밝혀내는데 일조할 것이다. Virginia Woolf’s novels largely focused on questions of self and other, intimacy and distance, communication and alienation. In Between the Acts, the final novel published after Woolf’s suicide in 1941, Woolf concerns herself with questions of how other people can be known and understood. Through the crises of faith in the possibility of ultimate knowability and complete understanding that emerge from the war, a prevalent sense of unpredictability saturates and shapes Woolf’s Between the Acts. Such failures of communication are a familiar characteristic of modernist novels. However, I argue that Between the Acts portrays such gaps as the very encounter with alterity that can define the ethics of modernism. The rethinking of ethics focused on responsibility for the absolute other, associated closely with Emmanuel Levinas, enables a more complex understanding of the novel. Focusing on its status as deeply engaged with questions of war, death, and sympathy for others, I suggest that Between the Acts interweaves epistemological, ethical, and political concerns. Reading the novel in dialogue with Levinas helps to clarify the philosophy of the other in Woolf’s Between the Acts.

수준별 과업 중심의 수업을 통한 초등영어 읽기 쓰기 지도와 효과 분석

This paper aims to examine the effects of level-differentiated-task-based teaching on the development of primary school students` English reading and writing skills. A total of 75 sixth graders (38 students of a control class, 37 students of an experimental class) were participated in the study. They were divided into an advanced group and a remedial group in a class, respectively. Each group of the experimental class was taught for 10 weeks (twice a week) through different reading and writing tasks for this study which were developed to fit for the students` different levels. To find out the results of the study, reading and writing tests, a questionnaire, and self-evaluation were administered at the end. The findings of the study are as follows; 1) level-differentiated teaching had a positive effect on the literacy development of the advanced group while it didn`t influence the learning of the remedial group. 2) level-differentiated teaching contributed a lot to the students` interests and confidence in English in an advanced group but not in a remedial group.

The palato-gingival groove - anatomical anomaly occurred in maxillary lateral incisors : case reports

본 연구는 상악 측절치에서 발생한 구개-치은구로 인한 치수괴사와 치주병소에 관한 임상증례이다. 첫 번째 증례는 심한 골소실로 인하여 발거되었고, 두 번째 증례는 근관치료 후 치주외과적 수술을 통하여 구개-치은구를 제거하고, 합성 골 이식 시행 후 흡수성막을 이용하여 치료하였다. 구개-치은구의 진단과 치료는 모두 어려우며, 많은 경우에서 발치가 선택되지만, 근관-치주 복합 치료를 통하여 구개-치은구의 성공적인 치료가 이루어질 수 있다. This report describes clinical cases of a palato-gingival groove on a maxillary lateral incisor with associated localized periodontal disease and pulp necrosis. The tooth of the first case was extracted because of severe bone destruction. The palato-gingival groove of the second case was eliminated using a round bur, and the resulting defect was filled with synthetic graft and covered by an absorbable membrane. Both diagnosis and treatment of palato-gingival groove were very difficult and usually extraction of the involved tooth is the treatment of choice, but combined endodontic-periodontic treatment allowed the tooth to be saved.
