Aged idle public facilities have recently been neglected, empty, in urban areas, causing social problems. So the central and local governments have tried to remodel such spaces into performing arts practice spaces with the objective of improving local culture and arts and forming cultural communities. Formation of performing arts practice spaces requires prediction of acoustic performance before and after remodeling at the stage of design; however, lack of data is causing lots of difficulty. From this perspective, this study aimed to analyze correlation between the volume and the acoustic performance assessment index before and after remodeling on the basis of the data from the previous research. These data are expected to be very useful at the design and construction stages in remodeling performing arts practice spaces.

University performance halls, which are still recognized as spaces only for lectures and events, are provided with very short reverberation time and have defects corrected with electric sound in building and remodeling. So the complaint has been made that they may have difficulty in allowing audience to appreciate music with a mellow sound due to insufficient reverberation for performances, including concerts. In addition, poor satisfaction with subjective acoustic performance in audience, despite the improvement in physical acoustic performance, following remodeling causes dissatisfaction. From this perspective, this study aimed to examine the changes in subjective satisfaction with the improvement in acoustic performance through auralization test on the basis of the field measurements of the performance hall in W University, which has recently been remodeled according to the data from the previous research, and the simulation data with improved acoustic performance appropriate for a multi-purpose hall.

With the recent rise in the cultural level, each region requires small-sized cultural and practice spaces, which are absolutely insufficient. Moreover, spaces within various buildings, which are managed by local governments, have been unused and neglected. So the government tries to make greater use of idle public facilities, which have been neglected, aged, for years, and provide stable practice spaces in support of creative activities by local arts groups. The development of such idle public facilities into performing arts practice spaces requires security of data concerning acoustic performance before remodeling at the stage of design; however, it is impossible to measure or evaluate their acoustic performance before remodeling because they have long been neglected and unmanaged. From this perspective, this study aimed to use acoustic simulation to determine acoustic performance in Hanpac Practice Room. The data from this study are expected to be useful in acoustic design and remodeling of similar spaces.

Korean traditional music is a unique type of music that exists only in Korea unlike Western music. As Pansori and Korean traditional music have been performed in multi-purpose halls and concert halls, which are venues designed mainly for Western music, the need for venues that are appropriate for Korean traditional music performance has been pointed out. Accordingly, a variety of acoustic materials on Korean traditional music halls are necessary, but there have yet to be systematic researches on reverberation time and absorption elements inside a venue. In this regard, the present study analyzes the correlation among absorption elements (room constant, absorbing power, and average absorbing coefficient) inside a venue based on the proper reverberation time suggested in the preliminary study. It is expected that the findings will be useful in specifying the range of optimum reverberation time for Korean traditional music halls that are suitable for the domestic condition.

With the recent improvement in the quality of life and cultural level for the people, the central and local governments take interest in activation of culture and arts; however, there have been absolutely insufficient spaces for practicing performing arts by now. So the government tries to make greater use of idle public facilities, which have been neglected, aged, for years, and provide stable practice spaces in support of creative activities of local arts groups. The development of such idle public facilities into performing arts practice spaces requires security of acoustic performance appropriate for their use as well as improvement of the aged facilities. From this perspective, this study aimed to determine the degree of improvement and changes in acoustic performance following remodeling of Hanpac Practice Room in Seoul, which has recently been remodeled, on the basis of the data from the previous research. The data from this study are expected to be useful in remodeling similar performing arts practice spaces.

With the recent improvement in the cultural level and the quality of life, one requires small-sized cultural and practice spaces, which are absolutely insufficient. So the central and local governments have created performing arts practice spaces to provide stable performing arts practice spaces and community spaces by remodeling neglected idled public facilities. However, creation of such performing arts practice spaces focuses only on improvement in spacial form, interior design, and physical acoustic performance. So satisfaction with subjective acoustic performance following remodeling is not evaluated and it is difficult to say that good acoustic performance has been secured. From this perspective, this study aimed to use auralization to assess responses to and changes in subjective acoustic performance of representative spaces following remodeling on the basis of the data from the previous research.

As Pansori and Korean traditional music have been performed in multi-purpose halls and concert halls, which are venues designed mainly for Western music, the need for venues that are appropriate for Korean traditional music performance has been pointed out. In addition, this area involves a lot of challenges since there have yet to be systematic researches on reverberation time that is ideal for Korean traditional music halls. In this regard, the present study compares the reverberation time proposed in the preliminary study with that proposed by Knudsen-Harris in order to grasp the range of reverberation time. Based on the result, the correlation between reverberation time and volume depending on the frequency is analyzed additionally. It is expected that the findings will be useful in specifying the range of optimum reverberation time for Korean traditional music halls that are suitable for the domestic condition.
