Vol.51 No.1
Dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) in fresh-cut salads available from the market were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The target compounds in 3 g of acidified homogenates were extracted with 20 mL of methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE). The extract was concentrated to 1 mL and heated for 1 h at 55℃. The analytes were separated using a DB-1701 column and detected with a mass spectrometer. The method detection limit was approximately 6 μg/kg, and both analytical accuracy and precision were found to be satisfactory. The linearity of the calibration curves expressed as the coefficients of determination was >0.996. The analysis of seven samples using the established method showed that the four samples contained considerable amounts of analytes (25.4-31.2 μg/kg of DCAA and 18.8-46.1 μg/kg of TCAA). These results raised a concern about the impact of fresh-cut salad consumption on human health.
CCA 방부처리 목재로부터 크롬, 구리 및 비소의 용탈 특성

A laboratory experiment was conducted to study the characteristics of leaching of Cr, Cu and As from chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood. The wood species tested was hemlock spruce (10 ㎝ × 10 ㎝ × 10 ㎝ cube). The leaching experiment was conducted over 60 days using I L of leachants whose pHs were adjusted to 2.0, 3.7, and 5.6, respectively with nitric acid, and also using lake water, according to the OECD guideline. Each leachate was analyzed for Cr and Cu using flame-AAS, and for As using vapor generation-AAS. Three metals were leached at the highest levels at pH 2.0 but almost at similar levels at the other conditions. Cumulative quantities over 60 days of a leaching period were in order As>Cu>Cr. As was predicted to leach with an increase in flux over a 10 year period, while Cr and Cu fluxes were predicted to decrease with time. This result suggests that arsenic can pose a health risk to humans over a long period of time, when CCA-treated wood is used for building facilities (e.g., playgrounds, residential purposes, etc.) with which humans frequently contact.

This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of the concentrations of selected trace metals and inorganic anions in five types of drinking water samples (mineral spring water, well water, small community water, municipal tap water, and commercial mineral water) collected from Chuncheon, Gangwon-do in 2007. Forty four samples were analyzed for five metals and five anions using an atomic absorption spectrometer and an ion chromatograph, respectively. Arsenic (As) and nitrate (NO₃?) concentrations in some groundwater samples did not meet the future (10 ㎍/L) and current (44 ㎎/L) Korean drinking water standards, respectively. On the other hand, any municipal tap water samples, the sources of which were lake surface water, satisfied the Korean standards. Human health risk assessment results showed that arsenic in all types of water, especially groundwater including commercial mineral water, may pose both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic effects on the residents. It is concluded that groundwater is not safe drinking water any longer and that a national survey and follow-up measures need to be taken.
