Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare primary salivary gland malignancy characterized by histological features similar to those of ductal carcinomas of the breast. It is regarded as a high-grade malignancy associated with frequent local recurrences and early distant metastases that require aggressive treatment. The typical fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) findings in SDC include cellular smears showing tumor cells with eccentric pleomorphic nuclei and a granular cytoplasm arranged in flat sheets or cribriform patterns against a necrotic background. However, the presence of mucin-containing cells in SDC has been rarely described. We report the FNAC findings in a patient with histologically confirmed SDC that demonstrated numerous mucin-containing cells and was subsequently misdiagnosed as a high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Here we discuss the problems involved in distinguishing SDC from high-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma on the basis of cytologic findings alone.

The macrofollicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (MVPC) is characterized by macrofollicles occupying more than half of the tumor and demonstrating nuclear features of classic papillary carcinoma. It is difficult to recognize on fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology due to the paucity of aspirated neoplastic cell clusters, especially when the tumor is associated with extensive areas of hemorrhage. Case: A 34-year-old female presented with a well-demarcated nodule in the thyroid gland, diagnosed as a benign nodule on ultrasonography and computed tomography. FNA cytology smear revealed a few small aggregates of follicular cells with morphological features suspicious for papillary carcinoma, set in a background of hemorrhage, inflammatory cells, and hemosiderin-laden macrophages. Intraoperative frozen section revealed macrofollicular nests filled with hemorrhage and composed of follicular cells demonstrating nuclear clearing and grooves. Conclusion: MVPC is a rare but distinctive variant of papillary carcinoma, which is easily mistaken for adenomatous goiter or benign macrofollicular neoplasm on radiologic findings. The cytopathologist should alert oneself on encountering benign radiologic findings and any smear composed of scant numbers of follicular cells with nuclear features suspicious for papillary carcinoma despite the bland-looking background of hemorrhage and hemosiderin-laden macrophages, and recommend intraoperative frozen sections for a definite diagnosis.
여러 식물병원성 진균을 억제하는 Streptomyces costaricanus HR391의 항진균능

여러 토양에서 분리한 400여 개의 방선균 균주에 대해 4가지 식물병원성 진균에 대한 항진균 활성을 조사하였으며 그 중 Streptomyces costaricanus HR391 균주는 PDB 배지에서 식물병원성 진균인 Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. raphani, F. oxysporum f. sp. niveum, F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici와 Rhizoctonia solani의 균사 생장을대조군과 비교하여 각각 26.5, 26.2, 21.2와 23.8% 저해하였다. S. costaricanus HR391은 항진균물질인 siderophore를 $98{\mu}M$을 생성할 뿐만 아니라 유화활성을 나타내며 막지질을 파괴할 수 있는 생물계면활성제인 rhamnolipid와 lipopeptide인 iturin A와 surfactin를 생성하였다. 또한 진균 세포막을 분해할 수 있는 chitinase와 glucanase 활성도 나타내었으며 병원균의 막을 파괴하는 AMP와 항생물질 phenazine도 분비하였다. 이외에도 식물생장 촉진활성을 갖는 zeatin, gibberellin과 indole acetic acid 같은 식물호르몬도 생성하였다. 이와 같이 항진균 활성을 나타내는 S. costaricanus HR391 균주는 다양한 종류의 항진균 물질의 상승작용과 더불어 높은 생물계면활성이 본 균주의 항진균 활성에 큰 역할을 하는 것으로 보이며 친환경적인 생물학적 항진균제로서 활용이 가능할 것으로 기대된다. In this study Streptomyces strains were isolated from soils and their antifungal activities and involved mechanisms were investigated. Among over 400 isolates of actinomycetes, Streptomyces costaricanus HR391 was selected as a potential antagonist to control several plant-pathogenic fungi. S. costaricanus HR391 inhibited mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. raphani, F. oxysporum f. sp. niveum, F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, and Rhizoctonia solani by 26.5, 26.2, 21.2, and 23.8%, respectively compared to those of uninoculated control after 7-day incubation on PDB medium. S. costaricanus HR391 produced $89{\mu}M$ of siderphore, and showed fungal cell wall-degrading activity including $0.46{\mu}mol/min/mg$ of chitinase and $0.83{\mu}mol/min/mg$ of ${\beta}$-1,3 glucanase. S. costaricanus HR391 secreted 87.49 mg/L of rhamnolipid, and produced 9.49 mg/L and 4.3 mM of lipopeptide, iturin A and surfactin, respectively, all they are membrane-disrupting biosurfactants. It also produced antimicrobial peptide and antibiotics phenazine. In addition to antifungal substances, S. costaricanus HR391 secreted plant growth-promoting phytohormones, zeatin, gibberellins and IAA. These results suggest that S. costaricanus HR391 may be utilized as an environment-friendly biocontrol agent against some important pathogenic fungi.

Kimura's disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown cause and is most prevalent among Asians. The cytologic findings of Kimura's disease are significant numbers of eosinophils in a background of lymphoid cells, occasional fragments of collagenous tissue, proliferation oi vessels, and Warthin-Finkeldey polykaryocytes. Among these features, the most important cytologic feature of Kimura's disease is a significant numbers of eosinophils. We experienced a case of Kimura's disease in the parotid gland which we fatted to recognize on cytology due to the apparent paucity of eosinophils. On careful retrograde reviewing of the cytologic findings, a few scattered leukocytes, previously interpreted as polymorphous leukocytes, had bilobed nuclei and coarse green but granular cytoplasm on Papanicolaou preparation. These leukocytes showed obvious orange-red intracyloplasmic granules as in eosionophils on Giemsa stain. The paucity of eosinophils may be due to the thick fibrosis around lymphoid follicles or any technical error during aspiration. Whereas the Warthin-Finkeldey type giant cell is not a sensitive cytologic marker of Kimura's disease, it may be a helpful cytologic feature. To reach a correct cytologic diagnosis of Kimura's disease, It is important to keep in mind that searching for Warthin-Finkeldey type giant cells and evaluation of Giemsa stain for detection of eosinophils would be helpful.
KIST와 FZ-Julich SOFC간의 출력성능 비교

We evaluate and compare the power generating characteristics of the anode supported SOFCs which have been fabricated from KIST and FZ-Julich in Germany. The performance and electrochemical property of each unit cell was characterized at the temperature range of $650-850^{\circ}C$ under same operating conditions and its microstructural property was thoroughly investigated via SEM after the performance test. According to the investigation, KIST- and FZJ SOFC showed different power generating characteristics in their temperature dependances due to their different design of electrode microstructure, especially the cathode microstructure. FZJ SOFC showed better performance at high temperature while showed lower performance at lower temperature. From the investigation about the correlation between microstructure and electrochemical property, we found that the superior performance of FZJ SOFC at high temperature was mainly due to its lower cathodic polarization resistance whereas better performance of KIST SOFC at lower temperature was mostly attributed to the lower ohmic resistance.

LSGM$(La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}})$ is the very promising electrolyte material for lower-temperature operation of SOFCs, especially when realized in anode-supported cells. But it is notorious for reacting with other cell components and resulting in the highly resistive reaction phases detrimental to cell performance. LDC$(La_{0.4}Ce_{0.6}O_{1.8})$, which is known to keep the interfacial stability between LSGM electrolyte and anode, was adopted in the anode-supported cell, and its effect on the interfacial reactivity and electrochemical performance of the cell was investigated. No severe interfacial reaction and corresponding resistive secondary phase was found in the cell with LDC buffer layer, and this is due to its ability to sustain the La chemical potential in LSGM. The cell exhibited the open circuit voltage of 0.64V, the maximum power density of 223 $mW/cm^2$, and the ohmic resistance of $0.17{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$. These values were much improved compared with those from the cell without any buffer layer, which implies that formation of the resistive reaction phases in LSGM and then deterioration of the cell performance is resulted mainly from the La diffusion from LSGM electrolyte to anode.

A proper sealant for low temperature SOFCs should show zero or low leak rates to avoid direct mixing of the fuel and oxidant gases or leakage of fuel gas during the operation of SOFCs. Furthermore, it should be chemically and/or mechanically stable in both oxidizing and reducing environments and chemically compatible with other fuel cell components. In the present work, we developed a novel compressed seal gasket of glass-based composite reinforced with ceramic particulate particles, which can efficiently control the viscous flow of glass matrix as well as the crystallization of glass phase. This novel sealing gasket showed excellent gas tightness under very low compressive load which would be suitable for the operation of SOFCs in the temperature range $600{\sim}650^{\circ}C$.
