This paper describes a three-stratum prosody of the southeast Gyeongnam dialect (SGD). The top stratum is the side-dot pattern representation stratum which consists of various combinations of quadrangles {□, ·□, :□}, subscripts {₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ … m} and superscripts {⁰ ¹ ² ³ … ⁿ}. The middle stratum is the tonemic form representation stratum. The bottom stratum is the surface pitch manifestation stratum. The side-dot pattern representation stratum determines the functions of mutual opposition or neutralization in the various side-dot connections which form side-dot patterns. The tonemic representations found in the middle stratum can be formed by substituting unmarked indicators (□), simple marked indicators (·□), and double-marked indicators (:□) into H, M, and L, respectively. Applying pitch manifestation realization rules to tonemic form representations produces the SGD’s pitch manifestations. The three major rules for the top stratum, which derive complex nouns in the SGD, are as follows: Ru1e one is the default rule in which any unmarked pattern □ⁿ remains unchanged in the ‘{― □m·□₁}’ environment. Ru1e two is the rule of changing the first constituent into unmarked pattern in which any side-dot pattern is changed to an unmarked pattern in the ‘― {·□₁, :□₁}’ environment. Ru1e three is the neutralization rule in which any side-dot pattern is changed to ·□₁ in ‘{·□₁, :□₁} ― }’ environment or :□ⁿ is changed to ·□ⁿ in ‘{□₁ ― }’ environment.

In this article, I compared the tone systems and various tonological phenomena in inflectional forms of monosyllabic verbals, and di-syllabic compound verbals of Goseong dialect of the southwest Gyeongnam and Changwon dialect of the southeast Gyeongnam. Monosyllabic verals are divided into five classes according to what is the underlying tone of stem firstly, and to whether alternations of stem tone on the paradigm appear or not secondly. Five classes: ① constant even tone, ② variable even tone, ③ departing tone, ④ constant rising tone and ⑤ variable rising tone. Di-syllabic compound verbs are divided into normal constant di-syllable verbals and variable di-syllable (composed of a monosyllabic morpheme plus a monosyllabic variable even tone verb stem). By the two dialects are the three tones: even-tone ‘phyeong-seong’, rising-tone ‘sangseong’ and departing tone ‘geoseong’ basically. One-to-one correspondence are closely performed between each tonemic pattern of the two dialects. We can find corresponding relations between the rising-tone pattern of Changweon dialect with both rising-tone pattern and yin-rising -tone pattern of Goseong dialect. We can find symmetric relation between each tonemic pattern of mono-syllabic stem verbal paradigm and of di-syllabic one in each dialect. There is a fourth tone ‘yin-sangseong’ in Goseong dialect but not in Changweon dialect. I suppose it is a survival of stereotyped pitch form of olden days’ rising tone pattern.
