The combustion process of spark-ignition engine takes places in a turbulent flow field has been influenced by the flow characteristics of mixture and discharge energy. Experiments were carried out with parameters such as the shape of swirl control valves. discharge pattern and distribution of ignition energy.
This study aims to development of ignition system by analysis of flow characteristics of mixture flow in an engine and ignition energy for enhancement of the ignitability of lean mixture.
Ignition instabilities and reduced flame propagation rates result in the increased cycle-to-cycle combustion variations associated in lean burn.
Combustion stability under lean mixture conditions could be improved by increasing burning rates through enhanced flow characteristics and by securing ignitability with newly developed ignition systems.
Inclined tumble(swirl) flows were induced by three different swirl control valves. The initial flame propagation was visualized by an ICCD camera and its image were analyzed to compare the enflamed area and displacement of intial flames
It was found that there is a correlation between the stronger tumble during induction and comparison and turbulence levels at the time of ignition resulting in faster flame development. Inclined tumble was proved to be more beneficial than the pure tumble for shorter combustion duration and stable combustion under lean mixture conditions, which was confirmed by faster propagation flame image.
Initial flame development and propagation were visualized under newly developed ignition system to estimate the effects of ignition characteristics on the engine performance in a port injection SI engine. Effects of intake flow was also investigated by three different swirl control valves.
Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified from production engine. Flame images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by high speed video camera and its image were analyzed to compare the intial flame area
Results show that IMEP tends to rise slightly as the ignition duration gets longer. The direction of flame propagation is decisively governed by the in-cylinder flow motion. Every flame grows toward the exhaust valve, forming a kind of turbulent flame. The observed flame through the result of visualization is very similar to the result of analyzed from pressure data.
In the view of exhaust emission reduction, in order to meet stricter regulation, the efficient supply and use of energy, researches and developments of the alternative fueled engine have been conducted over the world. The necessity of CNG engine development has been also increased domestically.
In the present study, a conventional gasoline engine was modified to a CNG engine, which can be operated with CNG only, and an engine bench test was performed to calibrate the operating parameters of the engine such as air fuel ratio, spark advance and etc. under various operating conditions. Then, the CNG engine installed on engine dynamo-meter was performed to examine the combustion pressure and exhaust emission characteristics.
