It is essential to understand American social values for better communication between Korea and America. This study is about American social value changes based on the trends in naming babies. Generally, parents throughout the world have expectations when they name their newborn babies. Social values include parents' views of life and occupations. This study analyzes, by decade, the top 20 American names used in naming the newborn for the last 110 years. The names are divided into types signifying power, justice, honor, and service in reference to scholars' classifications in this area. Thus this study arranges changes in American social values based on the interrelation between names and their types. The result of this study shows American parents' social values have changed during the last 110 years. This study finds its import in showing that American social value changes are reflected in naming the newborn. (University of Incheon)

This study discusses performance-based evaluation of four skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking) in English. Performance- based evaluation in English has an effect on the learning process while traditional evaluation has been concerned with linguistic competence in general. To a certain extent the evaluation of a communicative test is said to be subjective. In particular, the variability of the test results makes it difficult to prepare proper test contents for communicative competence. However, it can be resolved by adopting various kinds of testing measures based on integrative and criterion-referenced proficiency tests. Testing learners` communicative competence in a performance-based evaluation would prevail in an attempt to develop learners` communicative competence and improve the quality of English education. With the rapid development in computer hardware and software in recent years, the contents and methods of teaching English have been altered greatly. The use of multimedia and the Internet as a means of language teaching is increasing as information technology accelerates. Using multimedia and the Internet in language teaching allows teachers to have more time to devote to interacting with their students. Above all, it arouses in students the motivation for learning and enables each student to study with the speed commensurate to his/her own ability. Both teachers and students can choose their own style that is most efficient for their classes. When students are efficiently stimulated through visual and auditory materials, they can be more easily motivated to utilize and develop creative techniques by using multimedia and the Internet. Thus, in the information age, it would be desirable to innovate the existing concepts of lineal education and allow more student-centered lessons to more readily expose students to contents and experiences according to their own demands.

Thanks to the Internet, English education using CMC is less restricted by time and space. CLT(Communicative Language Teaching) is said to be highly concerned with English education using CMC. Speed, convenience, and interaction are important benefits of CMC and an integrative approach to CLT using CMC is considered to be helpful to improving the four skills of English.

This paper is concerned with English education in the information society. With the recent rapid development of computer hardware and software the contents and methods in teaching English have been altered greatly. The use of multimedia and the Internet as a means of language teaching is increasing with the acceleration of the information technology. Using multimedia and the Internet in language learning makes it possible for teachers to devote more time to interacting with their students. Above all, it arouses the students' motivation for learning. It enables each student to study with efficient speed equal to his ability. Both the teachers and the students can choose their own efficient style for their classes. As the students are efficiently stimulated through visual and auditory materials, they can be easily motivated to utilize and develop creative techniques by using multimedia and the Internet. It would be desirable that existing concepts of lineal education should be innovated to allow more student-centered lessons and to expose to contents and experiences according to their own demands in the information society.
