In order to achieve the national goal of greenhouse gas emission reduction in building sector, it is essential that insulation performance of existing buildings should be improved. Because old buildings built before 2001 accounts for 73.2% of total buildings in Korea, when the building insulation regulation was highly tightened. The aim of this study was to evaluate the actual insulation performance of opaque outer walls of old commercial buildings by field measurements. A variety of standards and relevant research which deal with the field measurement of thermal transmittance were surveyed. Outer wall U-values of old commercial buildings were measured and compared with the required value prescribed in the insulation regulation enforced when evaluated buildings were designed. As results, actual insulation performance was found to be approximately two-thirds of required level prescribed in the insulation regulation.

The purpose of this study is to develop a estimation method of energy consumption by end-use in office buildings. For this, the current status of information on building energy use was investigated, and the domestic and foreign literature on the classification of energy use in non-residential buildings and the estimation method of energy use were reviewed. In addition, the characteristics of energy consumption by end-use were analyzed with measurement data of 48 office buildings in Seoul. As results, the annual and monthly estimation method of energy consumption by end-use in office buildings using public and measurement data was presented, and the applicability of the estimation method was examined by applying to sample office buildings.

This study attempted to identify the possibility of natural herbal extracts as an alternative, preventive agent of caries by comparing antimicrobial activities between natural herbal extracts and mouth rinsing solutions against Streptococcus mutans. Natural herbal plants were extracted with distilled water and ethanol, respectively, to measure the minimum growth inhibitory concentration of S. mutans depending on concentration, and among which, solvents showing high antimicrobial activity were selected to compare their antibiotic effects with those of mouth rinsing solutions. Also, to determine the concentration of natural medicinal herbs that can be used safely in the oral cavity, the extracts were treated to the normal gingival fibroblast cells depending on concentration in order to determine its cytotoxicity using MTT. In terms of the minimum growth inhibition concentration, the growth inhibition of S. mutans was more excellent in the ethanol extract than in the distilled water. When the minimum growth inhibition concentration was compared, Psoralea corylifolia of natural herbal ethanol extracts, and Hexamedine (Bukwang Pharm., Korea) of mouth rinsing solutions inhibited growth of S. mutans at the lowest concentration. When the minimum bactericidal concentration was compared, P. corylifolia of natural herbal extracts, and Hexamedine and Garglin (Dong-A Pharm., Korea) of mouth rinsing solutions eliminated S. mutans at a low concentration. The human gingival fibroblast was treated with natural herbal ethanol extracts at the minimum growth inhibition concentration of 10, 39, and 78 꺷g/ml. As the result, no cytotoxicity was found. When this was treated at different minimum bactericidal concentrations, natural herbal ethanol extracts showed cytotoxicity except P. corylifolia.

As the national policy for reducing GHG emissions is strengthened, there is a growing interest in importance of providing detailed information on building energy consumption by end-use. Outside the country, they provide services that can detect energy usage information by building use and energy use through survey, calculation, and measurement. However, it is practically constrained to provide detailed measurement information for high-cost in existing buildings. So if energy consumption by carrier can be used to estimate energy consumption by end-use, it will be possible to provide a cost-effective solution. Therefore, the comparative analysis of energy consumption data by end-use and by carrier will be very useful as the basic data to develope an estimation methodology of end-use energy consumption.

As the national policy for reducing GHG emissions is strengthened, there are growing demands for the development of energy-related policies and regulations and the development of energy-saving technology elements. As the related research progresses, the development of standard conditions by building types is becoming more important in order to quantify the practical energy reduction effects on the application of laws and development technologies. In the United States, the development of reference models & standard conditions for commercial buildings is divided into 16 building types, 16 locations and 3 construction years. However, in Korea, the development status of standard conditions to reflect domestic conditions is insignificant, there is also a lack of relevant information. The purpose of this study is to provide a status data for the development of standard conditions in office buildings by investigating the characteristics of building, equipments and operation patterns by conducting field surveys on the existing office buildings in Seoul, Korea.
