        Background: Precise anatomical knowledges are deemed essential to prevent complications following acupuncture. This study was designed to evaluate the thickness and width in the superficial group of back muscle to help reduce the adverse effect of acupuncture including iatrogenic pneumothorax following acupuncture. Material and Method: Subjects were 9 cadevars (8 men and 1 women ranging in age from 53 to 87 years). The thickness of back muscles including trapezius, levator scapulae, rhomboid minor, rhomboid major and the width of levator scapulae were measured. Result: The mean thickness of trapezius in superior angle and inferior angle was 9.1mm and 4.9mm respectively. The mean thickness and width of levator scapulae was 9.3mm and 27.3mm respectively. The mean thickness of rhomboid minor and rhomboid major was 5.0mm and 6.8mm respectively. Conclusion: The results of this study could be helpful for preventing iatrogenic pneumothorax following acupuncture.
