Galen still states that gout is rare amongst Asians and that it is more common amongst beer drinkers and people whose living standards are high. It is interesting to note, the recent estimate by Grayzel, that 17% of normal male subjects would be expected to have values above 6.0mg% and 16% of normal female subject values above 5.0mg%. In a recent study 30% of 737 patients seen at a rheumatic-disease hospital were found to have serumurate levels greater than 6mg%. There is very great confusion about normal values of serum uric acid. There is no standardisation on an international basis. It is frequently stated that serum uric acid values greater than 6.0mg% in male subjects, or greater than 5.0mg% in female subjects, constitute hyperuricemia. 100 cases of joint disease, admitted to the Orthopedic Department of Severance Hospital during the period from March 1974 to May 1975, were studied. The serum uric acid determinations were undertaken in order to define the distri?bution characteristics of serum uric acid in joint disease in Korea, and to evaluate the importance of age and sex. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Sex incidence showed male 45% and female 55%. 2) The prevalent age groups in joint disease were 40 to 49 years of age in male patients and 50 to 59 years of age in female patients. 3) Serum uric acid levels in joint disease was not so high as compared with the normal subjects in the foreign countries. 4) The mean concentration for 100 subjects of both sexes was 4.5±0. 815 S. E. mg%. 5) Male subjects, of whom there were 45, had serum uric acid values ranging from 3.2 to 11.9mg% with an arithmetic mean of 5.70 mg% and a standard error of 0.27mg%. Female subjects, 55 in all, had serum uric acid values ranging from 1.5 to 7.3mg% with an arithmetic mean of 3. 6Orng% and a standard error of 0.17mg%. 6) The mean difference between mean values in male and female subjects was about 2. lmg%. 7) 37.8% of all male subjects were found to have values of 6.0mg% or greater. 12.7% of all female subjects were found to have values of 5.0mg% or greater.

The authors surveyed flexor tendon laceration in the forearm and the hand. Sixty-six patients had treatment: by direct repair in fifty-four patients, free tendon-grafting in eleven, and tendon transfer in one. Indications permitting primary repair included clean lacerations caused by sharp instruments with minimum tissue damage and no contamination or open fractures. Careful technique by a skilled surgeon and 'postoperative rehabilitation were important. Good results were obtained in seventy-one per centof the tendon repairs.
