The national wind map of South Korea has been established as a core data to support national strategy building and promotion of wind energy dissemination. The national wind map has been made by numerical wind simulation with the spatial resolution of 1 km horizontal, 10m vertical and temporal resolution of 1 hour interval for 5 years period (2003-2007). Therefore, an application system linked with the national wind map named KIER-WindMap^{TM} is being developed to be used by the government, local government, developers and researchers. We introduce the current status of the application system and the future development plans.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the thermal performance of a heat pipe having two dissimilar condenser sections which were subject to different boundary conditions. The first condenser dissipates heat to the surrounding air through annular fins by natural convection, while the second one is cooled by a liquid by forced convection at different temperatures. The container and the wick were made of stainless steel and the working fluid was Dowtherm-A for medium-temperature applications. The diameter and length of the heat pipe were 25.4 mm and 1 m, respectively. The maximum thermal load was 1 ㎾ and the operating temperature was around 250℃. The liquid fill charge was adjusted so that the first condenser section may work as an evaporator when the original evaporator was inactive in a vertical configuration. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of thermal resistance and effective thermal conductance against input heat flux and operating temperature.

An experimental investigation was conducted on a heat pipe for application in a thermal storage system consisted of a phase-change material (PCM) at around 340℃. The working fluid was Dowtherm-A and the screen mesh wick as well as the container was made of stainless steel. Since the PCM should be located in the middle section of the heat pipe configured vertically, and only one of the two extruded ends of the heat pipe should function, either as an evaporator or a condenser, during the heat charge and dissipation mode, the initial fluid charge should be higher than the evaporator length located at the bottom of PCM. The total length and the outer diameter of the heat pipe were 1 m, and 25.4 ㎜, respectively. The thermal performance of the heat pipe was presented in terms of the thermal resistance, the heat transfer coefficient, and the effective thermal conductivities as functions of operating temperature and heat flux.
