Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of implant wearers about periodontal diseases and implant management, which were closely linked to implant durability, in an effort to obtain information on the right directions for oral health education related to implant self-care and specialized care. Methods : The subjects in this study were 217 patients who wore implant and visited 14 different dental hospitals and clinics in the metropolitan area. After a questioaire survey was conducted and collected data were analyed by the statistical package SPSS 18.0. Results : As for the awareness of the subjects on the regeneration of alveolar ridge by general characteristics, there were statistically significant intergroup gaps according to the number of possessed implant, implant satisfaction and subjective gingival health status(p<0.05). Regarding their awareness of implant durability by general characteristics, there were statistically significant gaps according to the number of possessed implant and oral health education experience(p<0.05). Concerning their awareness of the cycle of regular implant checkup by general characteristics, there were statistically significant gaps according to occupation, subjective gingival health status and oral health education experience(p<0.05). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings suggest that in order to ensure the long- term safe maintenance of implant, the way of looking at periodontal diseases and implant management should be changed. Specifically, more intensive oral health education should be provided for implant wearers to be aware of the importance of self-care and specialized care to change their oral health behavior, and clinical dental hygienists should improve their role performance to make it happen.(J Korean Soc Dent Hyg 2012;12(4):759-770)

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze 356 papers included in the Journal of the Korean Society of Dental Hygiene between 2000 when the initial number was issued and April, 2010. The papers involved articles, treatises, theses and dissertations. Methods: According to existing literature related to paper analysis, all the journals were analyzed by year to find out the subjects of the studies, places for data gathering, the presence or absence of research funds supplied, the number of researchers, research methods, methods of data collection, themes and data analysis methods. Results: As for subjects, the largest group of the papers that numbered 69(20.7%) examined dental hygienists, and the second biggest group that numbered 65(19.5%) examined dental hygienists and students. The third greatest group that numbered 47(14.2%) examined patients at dental hospitals and clinics. Concerning places of data gathering, schools(37.1%) were the most common places where data were collected, followed by dental hospitals/clinics(31.6%) and laboratories(7.4%). In terms of research design, research studies accounted for 88.5%, and experimental studies accounted for 11.5%. Research studies were far more prevalent. Concerning themes, there were 76 kinds of concepts that the studies dealt with, and the most dominant concepts were oral health awareness and behavior, which 34 studies focused on(9.6%). 10 studies or more were concerned with dental service, oral health status, dental hygiene education, infection control, oral health education, job satisfaction and stress. As to data analysis methods, frequency analysis was most dominant, followed by Chi-square test, t-test, analysis of variance, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and regression analysis. Most of the studies made use of quantitative research methods. Conclusions: The effort by this study to analyze the papers included in the Journal of the Korean Society of Dental Hygiene to grasp research trends in the field of dental hygiene is expected to be of some use for the determination of the right directions of dental hygiene research in the future.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the oral health education and oral health care in the implant wearers. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was conducted by 253 patients in 14 different dental hospitals and clinics in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from July 1 to September 30, 2012. The instrument was adapted from Kang and Lee, Yu and Shim, and Ko and Jang on the basis of the previous study. The questionnaire consisted of 12 questions including general characteristics of the subjects(4 questions), oral health education(3 questions), behavior and attitude of tooth brushing(3 questions), and use of auxiliary supplies(2 questions). Results: 1. 38.3% of the patients received the dental care education for the first time. The most common education method was demonstration by dental hygienists(28.9%). 26.2% of the patients wanted to know the right toothbrushing method. 2. The best toothbrushing methods were rolling method(28.9%) and Leonard’s method(28.9%). 19.4% of the patients changed the toothbrushing method after education. 22.5 percent brushed their natural teeth and implant teeth by a different maneuver. 3. The interdental brush was the most commonly used product(35.8%) and most of the patients the interdental brush once a day(36.6%). 4. There was a significant difference between the frequency of toothbrushing and method(p<0.05). 5. There was a significant difference between the separate brushing of implant and natural teeth by the frequency of toothbrushing and method of education(p<0.05). 6. Use of interdental brush had an influenced on education method(p<0.05). Conclusions: Regular dental checkup and use of interdental brush can improve the oral care for the implant wearers. Regular use of interdental brush can prolong the life span of implant tooth and keep the patients’ teeth in good condition.

Objectives: This study aims to analyze the influence of self-rating creativity factors as well as past, present and future major competencies in dental hygiene students. The below shows the analysis results. Methods: As a random sampling method, a questionnaire survey was conducted from November 18 to November 29, 2019 for students of dental hygiene at some universities in Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, and a total of 266 copies of the collected questionnaires were analyzed. Results: Out of all the self-rating creativity factors, the domain of knowledge showed the highest score, 3.49, and out of all the major competencies, future competency showed the highest score, 3.66. When analyzing correlations between general characteristics and major competencies, this study discovered that those who had religions showed statistically and significantly higher scores in present competency and overall major competency than those who had no religion. When analyzing high school curriculum selections, this study found out that those who majored in natural sciences or other academic fields showed statistically and significantly higher scores in future competency and overall major competency than those who majored in liberal arts. The highest pure correlation was seen in the domains of accuracy and flexibility(r=.814) and in present competency and future competency(r=.684) out of all the major competencies. Besides, it was found that as overall major competency became higher, the flexibility factor(r=.358) became higher as well among all the creativity factors. When examining factors that had influence on creativity, this study discovered past competency, future competency and overall major competency. Conclusions: In conclusion, dental hygiene students, who develop themselves as health-specialized workers, should be provided with education programs that can enhance their major competencies for high-quality jobs. Especially when their creativity-based major competencies become enhanced, it is expected that they will have differentiated competitiveness in the near future.
