The purpose of this study is to interpret Gaudi's philosophy of architecture through an analysis of the design characteristics in his remodeling of Casa Battlo. A review of the literature related to Casa Battlo as well as a field study in Barcelona to see the building were made for this study. The conclusions were as follows; Casa Battle is one of the best examples of Gaudi's attempts at creating a surreal atmosphere and should be evaluated in light of the following considerations: 1) Casa Battle as a remodeled house presented its own restrictions to Gaudi that he overcame by introducing characteristic design elements into the remodeling process; 2) the achievement, a perfect sculpture expressing continuity through a gorgeous colour scheme using different materials and design motifs with a dynamic spiral shape, originated from Gaudi's observations of nature and his experiences working in modeling studios; 3) a visualized embodiment of Gaudi's naturalism and functionalism through the impression of perpetual movement and continuity as formative symbols of genesis, life, death, and transmigration of the soul, originated from Gaudi's personal experiences of the early deaths of several close family members; 4) the design is meant to show the same processes of creation used by nature rather than a mere imitation of nature. Gaudi was not only a person dedicated obsessively to his profession as an architect, but also a rationalist fundamentally in the way he operated. It was expected that this study could be employed as a small stimulus to challenge the paradigm of housing remodeling projects -a hot issue in today's Korea- especially in their philosophical aspect.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the design characteristics of external appearances of Hundertwasser's housing projects through both literature review and field study, and to understand how Hundertwasser's architecture philosophy was embodied in the design of external appearances so such projects. The subjects of the analysis are: Hundertwasser House; In the Meadow Bad Soden; The Forest Spiral Darmstadt; and The Green Citadel Magdeburg. The conclusion of the study is as follows. The fundamental architecture philosophy of Hunderwasser is the close linkage between mankind and nature. He has proven, through his four housing projects mentioned above, that it is possible to build houses without destroying and in harmony with nature. Hundertwasser had identified vitality, irregularity and diversity as being the source of beauty of nature. Using the human creativity, he had embodied such elements into his housing projects, thus suggesting an ideal housing environment whereby humanity is respected. Hundertwasser made use of organic curved line and spiral shapes that exist in nature when designing his housing projects. His creativity was articulated through vitality, diversity, and irregularity in colour schemes and a wide range of form. Indeed, he was an architect pursuing the underlying nature of both human and nature. The current living environment in Korea can be characterized as being standardized and desolate, which is a result of housing projects being focused too much on functionalism. Through its analysis of Hundertwasser's housing projects, one of the objectives of this study is to contribute to a new design paradigm being called for today, including for housing projects to be more ecological and environmental-friendly. By motivating architects and appealing to their clients, this study hopes to motivate those involved in various housing projects to think progressively. Such an attitude change could assist in transforming and thus enhancing the overall living environment in Korea.

The importance of the nursing home for the elderly is drawing a greater attention these days as the elderly population and the social recognition of the elderly issue have increased. Above all, the bathroom/toilet in nursing home is a space that could measure the health condition of the elderly and their ability to carry on the daily life. However, not many antecedent papers provide an in-depth study on the space planning of bathroom/toilet facilities and they are limited to specific regions. The purpose of this study is to provide the current condition of the bathroom/toilet facilities in nursing home for the elderly and to suggest the space planning through nationwide survey and case study. The analysis is based on the results of the survey from 180 nursing homes and the case studies of 14 nursing homes for the elderly in Seoul and 6 metropolitan cities. Bathrooms/toilets in the bedroom have toilet and wash bowls. However, many lack the shower, shower-chair and safety handle that would help the elderly and the assisting staff. Most of the layouts of the bathroom/toilet are connected to the bedroom for private use and yet, more than 50% do not have a space for turning the wheelchair. Public toilets meet the standards relative to the private bathrooms/toilets in the bedroom. But, they do not have covers to protect users from burns on water supply tubes or temperature control mechanism and would need to be improved. The height of the toilet bowls meets the standard, and the flushing device is in satisfactory condition in that it is either in lever or button form. However, the distance from the center of the toilet bowl to the side wall needs to be adjusted. In summary, although some of the bathroom/toilet facilities in Korean nursing homes are appropriate for the elderly, most are not. Considering the worsening health condition of the elderly, it is essential to improve the environment and facilities of the bathroom/toilet in Korean nursing homes for the elderly.

Recently the construction of railway sections passing the central area of cities and stations under railway lines are increasing, and then it is urgently required to take the countermeasures against the railway vibration and the second-phase noise radiated from it. The most efficient countermeasure, out of technologies developed up to now, is the floating slab track which is the track system isolated from the sub-structure by vibration isolators. At present, the core technologies for anti-vibration design and vibration isolator - one of key components - are under development. As a part of the study, in this paper, the design requirements for the vibration isolator under development have been investigated and the evaluation of static and dynamic performance of both coil spring type and rubber mount type vibration isolators was carried out.
