To investigate the variation and relationships in Pinellia terfnate BREIT collected throughout seven different regions of Korea, protein, glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase, estrase were analysed by electrophoresis. Seven native collections were classified into three groups by protein minor bands. The first group consisted of Seosan, Iri, and Jinju collections, the second group consisted of Chuncheon, Mt. Jiri, and Mt. Hanra collections, and the third group consisted of the Ulreungdo collection. In peroxidase, the number of bands in the Chuncheon, Iri, and Mt. Jiri collections, whereas the remainder had only one band. The Iri and Mt. Jiri collections also differed in the intensity of the second band, being darker in the Iri collection. Esterase might be considered a useful isozyme to classify and investigate characteristics because it showed different banding patterns in all native collections. Seven native collections were classified into three groups by a dendrogram based on the similarity index. The group Ⅰ consisted of Seosan, Iri, Jinju, and Mt. Hanra, the group Ⅱ consisted of Chuncheon and Mt. Jiri collections and the group Ⅲ consisted of the Ulreungdo collection.
