Microbial adaptation was performed to enhance the biological degradation of phenol. When Alcaligenes xylosoxidans Y234 was adapted with benzene, it could degrade phenol of 1,000 ppm completely in 60 hours while phenoladapted cell could not. This phenomenon was discussed in terms of intracellular enzyme activity and applied to the degradation of phenol in a packed-bed bioreactor.

2-kidney, 1 clip(2K1C) 신혈관성 고혈압 동물에서 생체내 내원성 산화질소(nitric oxide, NO)에 의한 혈관확장성 긴장이 변화되는가 밝히고자 NG-nitro-L-arginine(L-NNA), lipopolysaccharide(LPS) 및 tempol을 투여하여 혈압변화 및 혈장 NO 함량을, 그리고 적출 동맥환표본의 장력반응과 NO synthase(NOS) 단백발현을 조사하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1) L-NNA는 2K1C 고혈압군과 대조군에서 혈압을 상승시켰으며 그 정도는 양군에서 유사하였다. 2) LPS는 고혈압군과 대조군에서 혈압을 하강시켰고 그 정도는 양군에서 유사하였으며 고혈압군은 시간이 경과함에 따라 혈압이 회복된 양상을 보였다. 3) Tempol은 고혈압군에서 서서히 혈압을 하강시켰으나 대조군에서는 혈압변화를 일으키지 않았다. 4) LPS 투여 후 혈장 NO 함량은 고혈압군과 대조군에서 각각 유의하게 증가되었으며 양군간의 차이는 볼 수 없었다. 5) 혈장 NO 함량은 고혈압군과 대조군에서 tempol에 의해 영향 받지 않았다. 6) L-NNA에 의한 혈관수축반응은 고혈압군에서 대조군에 비해 유의하게 약화되었다. 7) 혈관에서 eNOS 및 iNOS 단백발현은 고혈압군에서 대조군에 비해 각각 유의하게 낮았다. 이상의 실험결과로 보아 2K1C 신혈관성 고혈압에서 생체내 NO의 총 혈관확장성 긴장은 변하지 않으나 혈관에서의 NO 긴장은 감소될 것으로 사료된다. Endogenous nitric oxide(NO) plays an important role in the regulation of blood pressure. It has been known that the evoked NO-dependent dilator system may be impaired in various hypertensive models. The effects of NG-nitro-L-arginine(L-NNA), lipopolysaccharide( LPS) and tempol on mean arterial pressure( MAP) and the effects of L-NNA on isolated aorta tone were studied in order to elucidate potential alterations in resting vasodilator tone of NO in two-kidney, one clip(2K1C) hypertension. Plasma nitrite/ nitrate levels were measured by colorimetric assay, and the expression of endothelial and inducible NO synthases(eNOS, iNOS) was determined by Western blot analysis. L-NNA caused an increase of MAP, while LPS produced a hypotensive effect in both 2K1C and control rats. The magnitude of the pressor or depressor response to L-NNA and LPS was comparable in the two groups. Tempol induced a sustained decrease in MAP in 2K1C rats, while it had no effects on MAP in control rats. Plasma concentrations of NO metabolites were significantly increased following the LPS-treatment in both 2K1C and control rats, while they were not affected by tempol-treatment. In endothelium-intact aortic rings precontracted with 25 mM KCl, L-NNA caused a dose-dependent contraction. The magnitude of the maximal contraction was attenuated in 2K1C rats as compared with control. An inhibition of contractile responses to L-NNA in the hypertensive group was also shown in rubbed rings, although the magnitude of contractions was markedly reduced. The vascular expression of both eNOS and iNOS was significantly decreased in 2K1C rats as compared with control. These results indicate that 2K1C hypertension is associated with a reduced basal vasodilator tone of NO and a decrease in the vascular expression of NOS isozymes.

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Although many patients with functional dyspepsia experience headache concurrently with dyspeptic symptoms, studies suggesting mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are limited. Herein, we explore the relationship between gastrointestinal inflammatory cells and presence of headache associated with dyspeptic symptoms in children with <I>Helicobacter pylori</I>-negative functional dyspepsia.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Fifty-six patients with <I>H. pylori</I>-negative functional dyspepsia underwent upper endoscopy with biopsy to investigate recurrent epigastric pain or discomfort. Patients were divided into two groups according to self-reported presence of headache associated with dyspeptic symptoms. Inflammatory cells including mast cells, and enteroendocrine cells in the gastroduodenal mucosa were evaluated. Associations between headache presence and cellular changes in the gastroduodenal mucosa were examined.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Headache was not associated with the grade of lymphocytes, neutrophil infiltration, or enteroendocrine cell density in the gastroduedenal mucosa. However, headache was significantly associated with high mast cell density in the body (27.81 ± 8.71 vs. 20.30 ± 8.16, <I>p</I> < 0.01) and duodenum (23.16 ± 10.40 vs. 14.84 ± 5.88, <I>p</I> < 0.01).</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Presence of headache associated with dyspeptic symptoms is strongly related to mucosal mast cell density in pediatric patients with <I>H. pylori</I>-negative functional dyspepsia. Thus, our results may help clinicians understand and treat headache during dyspeptic symptoms in such pediatric patients.</P>

The molecular weight of poly-hydroxybutyric acid (PHB) produced by Alcaligenes sp. K-912 is an important parameter characterizing the physical properties of the polymer. The effects of temperature and the levels of glucose, ammonium, phosphate and amino acids on the molecular weight of PHB were investigated. Molecular weight of PHB by temperature varied in the range of 380,000 to 550,000, 400,000 to 600,000 by glucose, 300,000 to 380,000 by phosphate, 400,000 to 1,000,000 by amino acids, respectively under the experimental conditions.

The effects of metal ions on the biodegradation of benzene and toluene were investigated. Among 12 tested metal ions, Cu^(2+), Ni^(2+), Co^(2+) and A_g^+ inhibited the degradation of benzene and toluene severely by Alcaligenes xylosoxidans Y234. Cu^(2+) was found to inhibit catechol 1,2-dioxygenase in the degradation of benzene and toluene. Co^(2+) and Ni^(2+) were supposed to inhibit benzoate 1,2-dioxygenase, while Ag^+ was supposed to inhibit benzaldehyde dehydrogenase in the degradation of toluene. The inhibition effect caused by these metal ions could be overcome both by microbial adaptation and by adding specific aromatic compounds to the broth.
열전소자를 활용한 하이브리드 제습시스템의 적용가능성 실험연구

이 연구에서는 최근에 이슈화되고 있는 열전소자와 흡습성이 높은 고분자 화합물(SDP, Super Desiccant Polymer)을 결합한 하이브리드 제습시스템에 대하여 다양한 환경조건에 따라서 효율적인 제어방안을 도출하기 위해 온습도 조건에 따른 제습실험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 온도가 낮고 습도가 높은 겨울철 지하실 같은 경우 열전소자를 사용한 냉동식 제습방식보다는 흡습성이 뛰어난 화학적 제습방법이 더 효과가 있는 경향을 보였다. 아직까지 열전소자의 성능이 부족한 부분과 이론적으로 공기 중 온도가 낮은 겨울철 냉동식 제습을 위해 이슬점이 맺히는 노점온도가 매우 낮아져야한다는 것 등의 이유로 화학적 제습을 하는 것이 효율적이고 실험결과 또한 유사한 경향을 보였다. 향후 더 다양한 환경에 적절히 제습시스템을 운전하도록 하는 실험 진행이 필요하다.

본 연구는 2018년 10월부터 9개월간 전국 경찰서에서 수집된 집회ㆍ시위 통계자료를 활용하여 한국형 대화경찰 제도 운용의 효과성을 검토하였다. 전국 254개 경찰관서를 대화경찰 투입 관서(실험집단, 165개)와 미투입 관서(통제집단, 89개)로 구분하고, 대화경찰 투입 전후에 실험집단과 통제집단에서 관측되는 위법 집회ㆍ시위 비율 및 집회ㆍ시위의 지속시간을 비교하였다. 그러한 과정에 있어, 정책개입의 효과성을 분석할 수 있는 오즈비 모형과 이중차분법을 활용하고, 도출된 결과를 비교하였다. 그 결과, 오즈비 모형은 대화경찰을 투입한 경찰관서의 경우, 그렇지 않은 경찰관서에 비해 위법 집회ㆍ시위가 약 54.55% 감소함을, 집회ㆍ시위의 지속시간은 2.91% 감소함을 추정하였다. 이와 유사하게, 이중차분법 모형은 대화경찰을 투입한 경찰관서의 경우, 그렇지 않은 경찰관서에 비해 위법 집회ㆍ시위는 32% 감소함을, 집회ㆍ시위 지속시간은 6.70분이 증가함을 추정하였으나, 집회ㆍ시위 지속시간과 관련된 결과는 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 본 연구의 결과는 대화경찰 제도 운용의 정당성을 확보하고, 동 제도의 활성화에 실증적 근거로 활용될 뿐만 아니라 증거 기반(evidence-based) 경찰정책 시행의 밑거름이 될 수 있을 것이라 판단된다. This study examined the effectiveness of dialogue police by reviewing a dataset on assembly and demonstration collected at police stations across South Korea between October 2018 and June 2019. The 254 police stations are divided into 165 experiment groups and 89 control groups, depending on the operation of dialogue police. This study used an odds ratio model and a difference-in-differences model to analyze the effectiveness of dialogue police. Using the odds ratio model, this study estimated that the number of illegal assembly and demonstration decreased by 54.55% in the experiment groups, as compared to those in the control group. Also, the duration of assembly and demonstration was estimated to decrease by 2.91% in the experiment groups. Similarly, using the difference-in-differences model, this study estimated that the illegal assembly and demonstration decreased by 32% in the experiment groups and the duration increased by 6.70 minutes. However, the result on the duration of assembly and demonstration based on the difference-in-differences model was not statistically significant. This study indicated that the operation of dialogue police promotes peaceful assembly and demonstration, and these results can be used as an empirical basis for securing the legitimacy of the operation of the dialogue police in Korea.
