        According to books (or Our forefather doctors of oriental medicine have thought) Cinnabar has the effects of tranquilization, sedation anticonvulsion by controlling heart channel heat, and of detoxification, antifebrile reinforcing eyesight by cooling down heart heat, and of soothing, reinforcing Qi by tonifyion heart Qi. Today clinical adjustment suggests that Cinnabar has the effects of tonifying mind, passing blood & Qi in meridian through, soothing both body & mind, moistning heart and lung, anticonvulsion tranquilization, sedation and antifebrile. In current medical terms, it could be said to have effects on central nervous system and heart. So this study was projected to find out Cinnabar's effect on cardiac contractility, cardiac function and, further, on central nervous system. Isolated atrium was used to examine the effect of Cinnabar on cardiac contractility. MATERIALS AND METHODS To examine(or study) the mechanism of Cinnabar(Hgs)'s effect on heart, 150 to 250g Sprague-Dawley rats were selected. And their hearts were extracted(or isolated) shortly after killed by guillotine followed by being suspended in modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose medium with 95% Oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide flowing. And atrium are separated in as short time as possible with care not to destroy the cardiac conduction system. Right atrium was connected to tissue holder and Left atrium to force transducer(Havard apparatus type) by silk(gut) with 750mg constant tension. After one hour, 10-5M, 5×10-5M, 10-4M Cinnobar(232.68g red HgS) were mixed into the medium bath with the atrium in equilibration state. Electrical stimulation was given to the atrium by 20 pulse/min with 10msec conduction pacing voltage. Harvard type chart mover system was used to record the developed tension due to atrial contraction. The change of developed tension was expressed in percentile change. So the effect induced by added substance was expressed as the percentile change of developed tension. The contractility of the isolated hearts was measured every ten minutes for one hour. And then the isolated hearts containing cinnabar were washed by fresh medium and the contractility was remeasured. The experiment was taken in 30℃ because the result was better and heart rate was more regular and lasting in 30℃ than in 37℃. RESULTS 1) The contractility of the heart suspended in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose medium was decreased 30% by 10-5M Cinnabar. 2) The contractility of the heart suspended in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose medium was decreased 50% by 5×10p-5M Cinnabar. 3) The contractility of the heart suspended in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose medium was decreased 80% by 10-4M Cinnabar. 4) The contractility of the heart injected with 10-5M Cinnabar was recovered about 20% by washing with new nutritive medium. These results suggest that Cinnabar has the inhibitory effect on the myocardial contractility and are consistent with the explanations on the effects of Cinnabar -the effects of tranquilization, sedation, anticonvulsion by controlling heart channel heat, and of detoxification, antifebrile, reinforcing eyesight by cooling down heart heat, and of soothing, reinforcing Qi by tonifying heart Qisedation of both body and mind etc.-written in old books. The more study on detail pharmacological mechanism needs to(is expected to) be followed.

        The prevalence of PPNG among pretreated gonorrhea cases isolated at the STD clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul has been studied and reported annually since 1981. In 1991, 123 strains of N.gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 58(47.1%) were PPNG. In 1992, 98 starains of N.gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 51(52.0%) were PPNG. In all, 109(49.3%) strains were found to be PPNG among 221 strains isolated between 1991-1992. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul showed increased tendency till 1989, thereafter, it has been stationary or slightly decreasing.

      • A Study on the Inhibitory Effects of Purified HgS on Rats' Cardiac Contractility

        <Objectives> This study is to evaluate the effects of HgS on cardiac and CNS disease. The cardiac contractility was observed to confirm these effects, and teh mechanism of HgS, using extracted hearts of the Sprague-Dawley rat. <Materials and Methods> (1) Preparation of Experimental Animal 150-160g of Sprague-Dawley rats were used after having been in 20±2℃, 60% humidity, 12 hours of darkness and 12 hours of brightness for two weeks. (2) Preparation of Extracted Heart 150-250g male Sprague-Dawley rats were killed by guillotine and atria were separated adn suspended in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose solution. And the contractility change rate, according to drug administruction, was checked. (3) Cardiac Contractility Measuring To measure cardiac contractility, the atrium of the Sprague-Dawley rat was suspended into 100cc of 95% oxygen and 5% bicarbonate supplied-pH 7.4 modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose medium in 30℃. The ingredients of Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate glucose medium were NaCl 120, KCL 4.8, CaCl₂1.22, MaSO₄1.33, KH₂PO₄1.2, NaHCO₃25.3 and glucose 5.55mM. The whole experiment proceeded in 30℃ because the experiment in 30℃ had better effects than in 37℃, and cardiac pumping showed steady and continuous results. Peak tension by atrial contractility was represented by a percentage change. So, the effects, with additional substance, were represented by a percent change of the evoked tension. That is, contractility change(%) is as follows: contractility change(%)=A-B/B A : Peak amplitude of developed tension B : Amplitude of equilibration at zero time (4) Substrate experiment Substrate experiment was 232.68g mole weight red HgS. Naturally solidated red HgS was selected and powerized, and purified red HgS was collected by a water-separation method. Concentration of HgS was 10mM 232.68g mole weight, and each dose was 10-5M, 5×10 5M, 10⁴M. <Results> The suspended mouse atrial contractility was restricted by HgS, which showed on increase of contractility restriction, according to the dosage. In HgS administration, after a 1 hour equilibration period, 10 5M group showed about 20% contractility restriction in 1 hour; 5×10 5M group showed 50%, 10⁴M group were washed with a medium, but cardiac contractility was recovered in about 20% of the cases. These results suggest HgS could cause damage to cardiac muscle in the end.

        백서의 임의형 피부판에 Prostaglandin 이 작용하는 시간에 관한 연구

        The survival of skin flap is an important aspect of plastic surgery and to increase the survival rate of the skin flap transplanted, many clinical and experimental researches have been carried out continuously upto this date. As a result of those researches it was recently found that in the process of preparation for the skin flap, prostaglandin is synthesized and released by some physical stimulus, which in turn contributes to dilating the blood vessels and increasing the survival rate of the skin flap finally. In this experiment the random skin flap pattern with PGE? and flurbiprofen, the most potent PG inhibitor known, were used and the effects of these two substances were relatively compared on the basis of reaction time. The following results were obtained. 1. In Group Ⅰ, PGE? was administered preoperatively and the survival rate of the skin flap was shown to be 72.4%, in Group Ⅱ, the average survival rate of 74.88% was obtained with PGE? given immediately after the operation. These two values showed significantly higher survival rate compared to that of the control group which yielded 66.38%, the group with PG E? given postoperatively showed slightly better survival rate than the group administered preoperatively. 2. In Group Ⅳ, flurbiprofen was given first preoperatively to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, followed by PG E? administration just before performing the operation. This group resulted in the average survival rate of 60.56% showing significantly lower survival rate than the control group, but nevertheless, definitely higher rate than the group treated by flurbiprofen alone. 3. In Group Ⅴ, flurbiprofen was given preoperatively with PG E? administered immediately after the operation and the average survival rate of the flap was 77.25% showing a remarkable increase. In conclusion PG E? administered immediately after the skin flap transplantation gains better survival rate than the ones with preoperative PG E?.

        지역화폐의 존재론적 기초와 사회적 목적

        지역화폐는 특정 공동체나 국가 내의 특정 지역으로 한정된 통화영역을 가지고 있는 화폐이다. 지역화폐는 존재론적 기초에 따라 두 가지로 구분할 수 있다. 첫째, 공동체적 지역화폐는 사회적 상호작용을 통해 형성된 호혜적 신뢰관계에 존재론적 토대를 두고 있다. 둘째, 정책적 지역화폐의 존재론적 기초는 지방정부가 가지고 있는 정치적 권위이다. 달성가능한 지역화폐의 사회적 목적은 지역화폐의 존재론적 기초에 따라 달라진다. 공동체적 지역화폐는 지역공동체의 형성이라는 사회적 목적에 초점을 두고 있고, 정책적 지역화폐는 지역경제의 활성화라는 사회적 목적을 추구하고 있다. Local currency can be defined as money whose use is restricted in communities or regions. In addition, local currency can be distinguished according to its ontological foundation. Community-based local currency is ontologically based on the social trust derived from close social interactions. The ontological foundation of policy-oriented local currency is the political authority of local governments. The social purpose of local currency depends on its ontological foundation. Community-based local currency aims to establish local community, whereas the social purpose of policy-oriented local currency is to create a viable regional economy.
