        Tensile strength of wood polylactic acid composite: A meta-analysis

        It is worth mentioning that polylactic acid (PLA) is extracted from plants and it can be considered a renewable resource. Thesustainable development of resources can be achieved by turning PLA and wood production into wood plastic composite(WPC). In this study, the mechanical properties of WPC were compared in a meta-analysis that focused on WPC made withPLA because the tensile strength (TS) of WPC compared with PLA was unclear. We assessed changes in the mechanicalproperties of PLA and wood used to make WPC by identifying 1919 peer-reviewed manuscripts, of which 15 articles wereincluded in this analysis. We found that adding 10%–50% wood flour reduced the TS, breaking elongation, and impactstrength of WPC. This did not affect the bending modulus. More work is required to solve the compatibility issues betweenwood fiber and plastics as well as to better understand the degradability of PLA-WPC. Additionally, the cost reduction forWPC synthesis must be addressed.

        Experimental research and molecular dynamics simulation on thermal properties of capric acid/ethylene-vinyl/graphene composite phase change materials

        In this paper, a new series of phase change materials (PCMs) composed of capric acid/ethylene-vinylacetate/graphene (CA/EVA/GR) were prepared and thermal properties were investigated using moleculardynamics simulation. The composite PCMs were characterized by Fourier transform infraredspectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanningcalorimetry (DSC) and thermal conductivity measurement. FT-IR, XRD and SEM results manifest that CAcan be successfully wrapped by EVA and GR additives, and there is no chemical reaction between CA, EVAand GR. DSC results indicate that adding GR into CA/EVA can result in composite PCMs maintain the highlatent heat, while too much GR will cause a significant reduction in latent heat. Thermal conductivityobtained from experimental tests reveal that GR can gradually enhance the thermal conductivity of CA/EVA with increasing dosage of GR. The experimental results of thermal conductivity fall close to that ofmolecular dynamics (MD) simulation at GR dosages below 1.8 wt%, but the experimental results present atrend which is contrary to MD simulation at higher GR dosages. The mean square displacement (MSD)results manifest that composite PCMs containing 1.8 wt% GR has the highest diffusion coefficient, whilehigher GR dosage will reduce the diffusion coefficient gradually.

        The Robust Derivative Code for Object Recognition

        This paper proposes new methods, named Derivative Code (DerivativeCode) and Derivative Code Pattern (DCP), for object recognition. The discriminative derivative code is used to capture the local relationship in the input image by concatenating binary results of the mathematical derivative value. Gabor based DerivativeCode is directly used to solve the palmprint recognition problem, which achieves a much better performance than the state-of-art results on the PolyU palmprint database. A new local pattern method, named Derivative Code Pattern (DCP), is further introduced to calculate the local pattern feature based on Dervativecode for object recognition. Similar to local binary pattern (LBP), DCP can be further combined with Gabor features and modeled by spatial histogram. To evaluate the performance of DCP and Gabor-DCP, we test them on the FERET and PolyU infrared face databases, and experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a better result than LBP and some state-of-the-arts.

        Inhibition of lncRNA KCNQ1OT1 Improves Apoptosis and Chemotherapy Drug Response in Small Cell Lung Cancer by TGF-β1 Mediated Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition

        Purpose Drug resistance is one of the main causes of chemotherapy failure in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC), and extensive biological studies into chemotherapy drug resistance are required. Materials and Methods In this study, we performed lncRNA microarray, in vitro functional assays, in vivo models and cDNA microarray to evaluate the impact of lncRNA in SCLC chemoresistance. Results The results showed that KCNQ1OT1 expression was upregulated in SCLC tissues and was a poor prognostic factor for patients with SCLC. Knockdown of KCNQ1OT1 inhibited cell proliferation, migration, chemoresistance and promoted apoptosis of SCLC cells. Mechanistic investigation showed that KCNQ1OT1 can activate transforming growth factor-β1 mediated epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in SCLC cells. Conclusion Taken together, our study revealed the role of KCNQ1OT1 in the progression and chemoresistance of SCLC, and suggested KCNQ1OT1 as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in SCLC clinical management.
