        Reliability and Validity of the Chinese (Mandarin) Tinnitus Handicap Inventory

        Objectives. The Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) is a commonly used self-reporting tinnitus questionnaire. We undertook this study to determine the reliability and validity of the Chinese-Mandarin version of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI-CM) for measuring tinnitus-related handicaps. Methods. We tested the test-retest reliability, internal reliability, and construct validity of the THI-CM. Two-hundred patients seeking treatment for primary or secondary tinnitus in Southwest China were asked to complete THI-CM prior to clinical evaluation. Patients were evaluated by a clinician using standard methods, and 40 patients were asked to complete THI-CM a second time 14±3 days after the initial interview. Results. The test-retest reliability of THI-CM was high (Pearson correlation, 0.98), as was the internal reliability (Cronbach’s α, 0.93). Factor analysis indicated that THI-CM has a unifactorial structure. Conclusion. The THI-CM version is reliable. The total score in THI-CM can be used to measure tinnitus-related handicaps in Mandarin-speaking populations. Objectives.       • Why MSN Lost to QQ in China Market?-Different Privacy ProtectionDesign

        International software providers have entered China market in recent years. One typical example is MSN. As an indigenous IT products, QQ provides almost the same functions as MSN and competes with MSN for years. Market survey indicates that QQ dominates the local instance message market. Why QQ could win the battle with MSN in China market? In this paper, we investigate the detailed designs of MSN vs. QQ, focusing in particular on their privacy protection. We find that, in general, users’ privacy concern level is low in China. Users show inclination to be connected with strangers in virtual community. They may trade off certain level of privacy protection to gain the chance of visiting by strangers. Moreover, in the position of control could mitigate users’ privacy concern. Indigenous IT products, such as QQ, understand and leverage users’ behavior. By lowering privacy protection and providing various control tools, QQ successfully caters to the need of young generation in China, which is main Internet users in China. Such results shed light on how to survive in China market for international IT product providers.

        Recent years, China has become one of the biggest market for International IT product giants have entered China market in recent years, such as MSN, Google, eBay, and Yahoo!. All of these products experience fierce competitions from indigenous IT products. Although indigenous IT products provide almost the same function as their international competitors, they dominate the market after passing the phase of imitation. What are the key reasons for their success? In this paper, we compare the detailed designs of MSN vs. QQ. By proposing a conceptual model, we investigate how the different functions of MSN and QQ lead to different users’ adoption intention. The conceptual model is not only helpful for researchers who are keen to investigate the factors which affect IT adoption process, but also shed light on how to understand users behavior and grab the market share for practitioners in China.

      • Crystalline Bilayer Graphene with Preferential Stacking from Ni-Cu Gradient Alloy

        <P>We developed a high-yield synthesis of highly crystalline bilayer graphene (BLG) with two preferential stacking modes using a Ni-Cu gradient alloy growth substrate. Previously reported approaches for BLG growth include flat growth substrates of Cu or Ni-Cu <I>uniform</I> alloys and “copper pocket” structures. Use of flat substrates has the advantage of being scalable, but the growth mechanism is either “surface limited” (for Cu) or carbon precipitation (for uniform Ni-Cu), which results in multicrystalline BLG grains. For copper pockets, growth proceeds through a carbon back-diffusion mechanism, which leads to the formation of highly crystalline BLG, but scaling of the copper pocket structure is expected to be difficult. Here we demonstrate a Ni-Cu gradient alloy that combines the advantages of these earlier methods: the substrate is flat, so easy to scale, while growth proceeds by a carbon back-diffusion mechanism leading to high-yield growth of BLG with high crystallinity. The BLG layer stacking was almost exclusively Bernal or twisted with an angle of 30°, consistent with first-principles calculations we conducted. Furthermore, we demonstrated scalable production of transistor arrays based crystalline Bernal-stacked BLG with a band gap that was tunable at room temperature.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Effects of Temperature and Additives on the Thermal Stability of Glucoamylase from Aspergillus niger

        GAM-1 and GAM-2, two themostable glucoamylases from Aspergillus niger B-30, possess different molecular masses, glycosylation, and thermal stability. In the present study, the effects of additives on the thermal inactivation of GAM-1 and GAM-2 were investigated. The half-lives of GAM-1 and GAM-2 at 70ºC were 45 and 216 min, respectively. Data obtained from fluorescence spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, UV absorption spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering demonstrated that during the thermal inactivation progress, combined with the loss of the helical structure and a majority of the tertiary structure, tryptophan residues were partially exposed and further led to glucoamylases aggregating. The thermal stability of GAM-1 and GAM-2 was largely improved in the presence of sorbitol and trehalose. Results from spectroscopy and Native-PAGE confirmed that sorbitol and trehalose maintained the native state of glucoamylases and prevented their thermal aggregation. The loss of hydrophobic bonding and helical structure was responsible for the decrease of glucoamylase activity. Additionally, sorbitol and trehalose significantly increased the substrate affinity and catalytic efficiency of the two glucoamylases. Our results display an insight into the thermal inactivation of glucoamylases and provide an important base for industrial applications of the thermally stable glucoamylases.
