<P> A dependence of cutoff proton kinetic energy on laser prepulse duration has been observed. Amplified spontaneous emission pedestal duration is controlled by a fast electrooptic pulse slicer where the rise time is estimated to be 130 ps. We demonstrate a new correlated spectral technique for determining this rise time using a stretched frequency-chirped pulse. </P>

Underspecified Japanese Semantics in a Machine Translation System

Semantic representations which are unerspecified with respect to, for example, scope, have recently attracted much attention. Most research in this area has focused on treating English language phenomena in a theoretical fashion. Our paper deviates from this twofold: We take Japanese as the language of our in-vestigations and describe how our ideas about underspecified Japanese semantics (e.g., on modality adverbs) have been implemented in a spoken-language machine translation system.
A Method for Reducing the Number of Metal Layers for Embedded LSI Package

We have successfully demonstrated a high-pin-count and thin embedded-LSI package to realize next generation's mobile terminals. The following three design key points were applied: (i) Using Cu posts, (ii) Using the coreless structure, (iii) Using a Cu plate as the ground plane. In order to quantitatively determine the contribution of the three points, the five-stage process for reducing the number of metal layers is described by means of the electrical simulation. The point-(i) and (ii) are effective from the viewpoint of the power integrity (PI); that is, these points play important roles in reducing the number of metal layers, and especially the point-(ii) contributes at least twice as the point-(i). The point-(iii) is not effective in the PI, but has a few effects on the signal integrity (SI). For reducing the number of metal layers, we should, at first, pay attention whether the PI characteristics fulfill the specification, and then we should confirm the SI characteristics.

In ischemic heart disease, cardiomyocyte death results from both necrosis and apoptosis, and the area of infarction gradually increases. The induction of therapeutic angiogenesis is a promising therapy for this condition. In the present study, we investigated the actions of SV peptide—a 7-amino-acid sequence with angiogenic properties derived from osteopontin in the extracellular matrix—in a rat model of myocardial ischemia. We examined the angiogenesis activity of SV ex vivo using ring assay and dorsal air sac assay and in ischemic myocardium. We also conducted histological evaluations of left-ventricle remodeling and evaluated left ventricular (LV) function by echocardiography. The SV peptide had strong angiogenic effects both ex vivo and in vivo. In the experimental rats, this peptide stimulated the formation of new blood vessels in ischemic myocardium. Histological evaluation of the left ventricle in the SV-treated group showed a significant decrease in the size of the infarction, rate of myocardial fibrosis, and cardiomyocyte hypertrophy. Moreover, administration of the SV peptide significantly improved LV function. These results indicate that SV peptide induced angiogenesis in ischemic myocardium and improved cardiac function. Thus, it could serve as a potentially useful new therapy for ischemic heart disease.
