Effect of Gaze Direction of Human Faces on Cosmetic Paper Advertisement
Seungji Lee,Sung-Phil Kim 한국HCI학회 2017 한국HCI학회 학술대회 Vol.2017 No.2
In cosmetic paper advertisement, models are important components for marketers to imprint the products to customers (e.g. Kim’s essence). One possible method to attract attention from customers is gaze direction of a model. This study aimed to identify how a model’s gaze direction affects a customer’s gaze pattern and how it relates to purchase intention. The gender effect was also investigated. The result showed a near-marginally significant observation that when a model gazed toward us, fixation duration on the model became longer and the number of visit increased. In addition, customers attracted by the model at the first time were likely to buy the product. The different gaze patterns between male and female were observed. The study indicates that the gaze direction of a model can affect fixation duration on model, which is correlated with the first fixation on model and finally leading to purchase behavior.

<P>In this paper, we fabricated In0.53Ga0.47As-on insulator (OI) MOSFETs on Si substrates with different doping types to mimic ground plane doping using direct wafer bonding and epitaxial lift-off (ELO) techniques. We investigated the impact of doping types on the ground plane and the backgate biasing, which are important and preferable components in monolithic 3-D (M3D) integration, on the electrical properties of MOSFETs, such as the threshold voltage ( <TEX>${V} _{T}$</TEX>) and the effective mobility ( <TEX>$\mu _{\textsf {eff}}$</TEX>). It was found that <TEX>${V} _{T}$</TEX> and <TEX>$\mu _{\textsf {eff}}$</TEX> were significantly modulated by the backsubstrate doping and the backbiasing. These observations were explained by the change of carrier distributions, which were confirmed by technology computer-aided design simulation. Furthermore, we investigated the reusability of InP donor substrates for sequential epitaxial growth after ELO process toward a cost-effective M3D integration with the In0.53Ga0.47As channel.</P>

<P>Endotoxemia (sepsis, septic shock) is an inflammatory, virulent disease that results mainly from bacterial infection. The present study investigates the inhibitory effect of a bioprocessed polysaccharide (BPP) isolated from the edible Lentinus edodes liquid mycelial mushroom culture supplemented with black rice bran against murine endotoxemia induced by the Salmonella lipopolysaccharide and <SMALL>d</SMALL>-galactosamine (LPS/GalN). BPP was obtained after dialysis against water using a cellulose tube with a molecular weight cutoff of 10000. BPP eluted as a single peak on an HPLC chromatogram. Acid hydrolysis of BPP showed the presence of the following sugars: fucose, galactose, galactosamine, glucose, glucosamine, mannose, rhamnose, and xylose. Treatment of BPP with β-glucanase reduced its immunostimulating activity, suggesting that the polysaccharide has a β-glucan structure. Pretreatment of mice with BPP via oral or intraperitoneal (ip) administration for 2 weeks resulted in the suppression of LPS/GalN-induced catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and transaminase (GOT/GPT) liver enzymes, amelioration of necrotic liver lesions, and reduction of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and nitrite serum levels as well as myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, an index of necrotic injury. Immunostimulating macrophage activity was up to 5.4-fold greater than that observed with the culture without the rice bran. BPP also extended the lifespan of the toxemic mice. These positive results with inflammation biomarkers and lifespan studies suggest that the BPP can protect mice against LPS/GalN-induced liver, lung, and kidney injuries and inflammation by blocking oxidative stress and TNF-α production, thus increasing the survival of the toxic shock-induced mice. The polysaccharide has the potential to serve as a new functional food.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jafcau/2013/jafcau.2013.61.issue-46/jf403173k/production/images/medium/jf-2013-03173k_0005.gif'></P>

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>To evaluate the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) encapsulated in self-assembled peptide (SAP) hydrogels in a rat knee model for the prevention of osteoarthritis (OA) progression.</P><P><B>Materials and methods</B></P><P>Nanostructured KLD-12 SAPs were used as the injectable hydrogels. Thirty-three Sprague Dawley rats were used for the OA model. Ten rats were used for the evaluation of biotin-tagged SAP disappearance. Twenty-three rats were divided into four groups: MSC (n=6), SAP (n=6), SAP-MSC (n=6), and no treatment (n=5). MSCs, SAPs, and SAP-MSCs were injected into the knee joints 3 weeks postsurgery. Histologic examination, immunofluorescent staining, measurement of cytokine levels, and micro-computed tomography analysis were conducted 6 weeks after injections. Behavioral studies were done to establish baseline measurements before treatment, and repeated 3 and 6 weeks after treatment to measure the efficacy of SAP-MSCs.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Concentration of biotinylated SAP at week 1 was not significantly different from those at week 3 and week 6 (<I>P</I>=0.565). Bone mineral density was significantly lower in SAP-MSC groups than controls (<I>P</I>=0.002). Significant differences in terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labeling staining between the control group and all other groups were observed. Caspase-8, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1, and matrix metalloproteinase 9 were diffusely stained in controls, whereas localized or minimal staining was observed in other groups. Modified Mankin scores were significantly lower in the SAP and SAP-MSC groups than in controls (<I>P</I>=0.001 and 0.013). Although not statistically significant, synovial inflammation scores were lower in the SAP (1.3±0.3) and SAP-MSC (1.3±0.2) groups than in controls (2.6±0.2). However, neither the cytokine level nor the behavioral score was significantly different between groups.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Injection of SAP-MSC hydrogels showed evidence of chondroprotection, as measured by the histologic grading and decreased expression of biochemical markers of inflammation and apoptosis. It also lowered subchondral bone mineral density, which can be increased by OA. This suggests that the SAP-MSC complex may have clinical potential to inhibit OA progression.</P>
A case of porokeratosis of Mibelli treated by topical ingenol mebutate gel 0.05%

Porokeratosis of Mibelli is generally chronic and progressive disease, and malignant trasformation may occur in 7% of patients. Multiple treatments have been described for porokeratosis of Mibelli, but the results have frequently been disappointing. Ingenol mebutate gel is an extract from the weed Euphorbia peplus and recently approved for the treatment of actinic keratosis. Treatments with ingenol mebutate gel that target keratinocyte inhibition and differentiation could besuccessful in porokeratosis of Mibelli, where there is a clonal proliferation of abnormal epidermal keratinocytes. A 48-year-old Korean man was diagnosed as porokeratosis of Mibelli on inner thigh by incisional biopsy and histologic examination. The lesions exhibited typical atrophic center and hyperkeratotic border of porokeratosis of Mibelli. The patient was treated with 2 cycles of ingenol mebutate gel 0.05%. After completion of the 2 cycles of treatments, the lesions had cleared with the resolution of the hyperkeratotic annular plaque. Although further studies are required to prove its effectiveness, we expect topical ingenol mebutate gel can be a promising treatment for porokeratosis of Mibelli.

Background: Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir is highly effective in preventing severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in high-risk patients with mild-to-moderate severity. However, real-world performance data are limited, and the drug is not so acceptable to the COVID-19 patients at high risk who need it in Korea. Methods: To evaluate the effectiveness of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir, we conducted a propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study on patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 at high risk for a severe disease who were hospitalized at four hospitals in South Korea from February 2022 to April 2022. A total of 236 patients in the treatment group (administered nirmatrelvir-ritonavir) and 236 in the matched control group (supportive care only) were analyzed for the primary outcome, i.e., the time to oxygen support-free survival. The secondary outcome was a composite result of disease progression. The reason for not prescribing nirmatrelvir-ritonavir to the indicated patients was also investigated. Results: The treatment group showed significantly longer oxygen support-free survival than the matched control group (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.01–0.31; P < 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that age (aHR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.00–1.07), National Early Warning Score-2 at admission (aHR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.08–1.71), nirmatrelvir-ritonavir treatment, female sex (aHR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.15–0.88), and time from symptom onset to admission (aHR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.48–0.95) were significantly associated with oxygen therapy. However, none of the factors were related to the composite outcome. In the unmatched control group, 19.9% of 376 patients had documented explanations for nirmatrelvirritonavir non-prescription, and 44.0% of these were due to contraindication criteria. In the treatment group, 10.9% of patients discontinued the medication primarily because of adverse events (71.4%), with gastrointestinal symptoms being the most common (50.0%). Conclusion: Nirmatrelvir-ritonavir treatment significantly reduced oxygen therapy requirements in high-risk patients with COVID-19 during the omicron variant surge in South Korea. Physicians are encouraged to consider the active use of nirmatrelvir-ritonavir and to be watchful for gastrointestinal symptoms during medication.

Robust Adaptive Control of A HexaSlide Type Parallel Manipulator
Kim, Jong-Phil,Kim, Sung-Gaun,Ryu, Jeha Institute of Control 2001 Transaction on control, automation and systems eng Vol.3 No.4
Jeha Ryu Department of Mechatronics, Kwangju Institute of Science and Technology This paper presents an application of a robust adaptive control strategy to HexaSlide type six degrees-of-freedom parallel manipulators. The HexaSlide type parallel manipulators are characterized as an architecture with constant link lengths that are attached to moving sliders on the ground and to a mobile platform. The proposed control law is developed based on a simplified second order system dynamic equation in joint space with uncertain mass, damper, spring, and Coulomb friction terms. These uncertain parameters are updated by an adaptation law that is derived by Lyapunov stability theorem. A robust adaptive control law by using the boundary layer is designed for the purpose of compensating for the neglected dynamic effects of the mobile platform and the six moving links that are modeled as a disturbance term. Experimental results show good and fast tracking performance.
Zinc Chloride Toxicity on Free Proline and Organic Acids in Germinating Rice Seed
Kim, Sang-Kuk,Chung, Sang-Hwan,Lee, Sang-Chul,Lee, Seong-Phil The Korean Society of Crop Science 1999 Korean journal of crop science Vol.44 No.2
The study was conducted to find the critical concentrations of zinc toxicity and to determine the changes of the contents of free proline and organic acids with treatment of different zinc chloride concentrations during rice germination and seedlings grown for seven days. The concentration of zinc chloride, 140 ppm, inhibited root elongation as much as 46 times compared with the control, and the germination rate was also decreased in all treatments of zinc chloride, showing that the germination rate decreased more with increasing concentrations of zinc chloride. Its rate was only 13% with treatment of 140 ppm zinc chloride. The content of free proline with treatment of zinc chloride, 140 ppm, was highest about 4,873 $\mu$M at 3 days compared with the control. Malic acid concentration with treatment of zinc chloride, 140 ppm, increased to approximately 4 times compared to the control. Citric and succinic acid content were also slightly increased in all treatments of zinc chloride.
