The biological control efficacy of a greenhouse soil bacterial mixture of Lactobacillus farraginis, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus thuringiensis strains with antinematode activity was evaluated against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. Two control groups planted in soil drenched with sterile distilled water or treated with the broadspectrum carbamate pesticide carbofuran were used for comparison. The results suggest that the bacterial mixture is effective as a biocontrol agent against the root-knot nematode.

The cyclic ether 1,4-dioxane is a synthetic industrial chemical that is used as a solvent in producing paints and lacquers. The EPA and the International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) classified 1,4-dioxane as a GROUP B2(probable human) carcinogen. 1,4-dioxane is also produced as a by-product during the manufacture of polyester. In this research, a polyester manufacturing company (i.e. K Co.) in Gumi, Korea was investigated regarding the release of high concentrations of 1,4-dioxane (about 600 mg/L) and whether treatment prior to release should occur to meet with the level of the regulation standard (e.g., 5 mg/L in 2010). A 10 ton/day pilot-scale treatment system using photo-Fenton oxidation was able to remove approximately 90% of 1,4-dioxane under the conditions that concentrations of 2800 ppm H2O2 and 1,400 ppm FeSO4 were maintained along with 10 UV-C lamps (240 μW/cm2) installed and operated continuously during aeration. However, the effluent concentration of 1,4-dioxane was still high at about 60 mg/L where TOC concentration in the effluent had been moreover increased due to decomposed products such as aldehydes and organic acids. Thus, further investigation is needed to see whether the bench scale (reactor volume, 8.9 L) of activated sludge could facilitate the decomposition of 1,4-dioxane and their by-products (i.e., TOC). As a result, 1,4-dioxane in the effluent has been decreased as low as 0.5 mg/L. The optimal conditions for the activated sludge process that were obtained are as follows: DO, 3-3.5 mg/L; HRT, 24 h; SRT 15 d; MLSS, 3,000 mg/L. Consequently, photo-Fenton oxidation coupled with activated sludge can make it possible to efficiently decompose 1,4-dioxane to keep up with that of the regulation standard.

Here we report a novel approach to prepare all-nanoparticle vesicles using ligand-stabilized gold particles as a building block. Hydroxyalkyl-terminated gold nanoparticles were spontaneously organized into well-defined hollow vesicle-like assemblies in water without any template. The unusual anisotropic self-assembly was attributed to the ligand rearrangement on nanoparticles, which leads to increased hydroxyl group density at the nanoparticle/water interface. One-dimensional strings were formed instead of vesicles with increasing surface ligand density, which supports the hypothesis. The size and the wall thickness of vesicles were controlled by adjusting the concentration of nanoparticles or by adding extra surfactants. The work presented here highlights the dynamic nature of surface ligands on gold particles and demonstrates that the combination of ligand rearrangement and the hydrophobic effect can be used as a versatile tool for anisotropic self-assembly of nanoparticles.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Differential Roles of Tubby Family Proteins in Ciliary Formation and Trafficking
Hong, Julie J.,Kim, Kyung Eun,Park, So Young,Bok, Jinwoong,Seo, Jeong Taeg,Moon, Seok Jun Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2021 Molecules and cells Vol.44 No.8
Cilia are highly specialized organelles that extend from the cell membrane and function as cellular signaling hubs. Thus, cilia formation and the trafficking of signaling molecules into cilia are essential cellular processes. TULP3 and Tubby (TUB) are members of the tubby-like protein (TULP) family that regulate the ciliary trafficking of G-protein coupled receptors, but the functions of the remaining TULPs (i.e., TULP1 and TULP2) remain unclear. Herein, we explore whether these four structurally similar TULPs share a molecular function in ciliary protein trafficking. We found that TULP3 and TUB, but not TULP1 or TULP2, can rescue the defective cilia formation observed in TULP3-knockout (KO) hTERT RPE-1 cells. TULP3 and TUB also fully rescue the defective ciliary localization of ARL13B, INPP5E, and GPR161 in TULP3 KO RPE-1 cells, while TULP1 and TULP2 only mediate partial rescues. Furthermore, loss of TULP3 results in abnormal IFT140 localization, which can be fully rescued by TUB and partially rescued by TULP1 and TULP2. TUB's capacity for binding IFT-A is essential for its role in cilia formation and ciliary protein trafficking in RPE-1 cells, whereas its capacity for PIP2 binding is required for proper cilia length and IFT140 localization. Finally, chimeric TULP1 containing the IFT-A binding domain of TULP3 fully rescues ciliary protein trafficking, but not cilia formation. Together, these two TULP domains play distinct roles in ciliary protein trafficking but are insufficient for cilia formation in RPE-1 cells. In addition, TULP1 and TULP2 play other unknown molecular roles that should be addressed in the future.

Aims. The aims of this study were (1) to determine the reference values for impulse oscillometry (IOS) and (2) to apply them to the evaluation of asthma in the general population of young Korean children. Methods. We performed a questionnaire survey and IOS measurements in 390 children aged 3-7 years in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, Korea, from July to August 2010. IOS measurements included respiratory resistance (Rrs) and respiratory reactance (Xrs) at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 35 Hz, respiratory impedance (Zrs), and resonance frequency (RF) before and 15 min after inhalation of 200 μg salbutamol. To determine the reference values for IOS, 161 children defined as healthy controls were assessed. Results. The IOS measurements were presented as means and standard deviations. The reference equations for IOS variables were determined by multiple linear regression analysis taking into account their height, weight, and age (R5 = 2.242 - 0.008 × height (cm) - 0.005 × age (months), coefficients of determination (R2) = 0.213). Height had the greatest correlation with IOS variables, similar to previous studies. Positive airway obstruction was defined as R5 greater than the 95th percentile of predicted R5 from the reference equation. There was a higher percentage of children with positive airway obstruction in children with asthma than in healthy controls (27.3% vs. 6.2%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that positive airway obstruction was a significant risk factor for the diagnosis of asthma (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 6.245; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.270-17.175). Conclusion. This study provided reference values for IOS in young Korean children and applied the reference values to evaluate children with asthma. We suggest the 95th percentile of predicted R5 as a cut-off value for positive airway obstruction, which may increase the risk for diagnosis of asthma.
