<P>Growing a GaN film on a patterned Al2O3 substrate is one of the methods of reducing threading dislocations (TDs), which can significantly deteriorate the performance of GaN-based LEDs. In this study, the microstructural details of the GaN film grown on a cone-shaped patterned Al2O3 substrate were investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and weak-beam dark-field techniques. Various defects such as misfit dislocations (MDs), recrystallized GaN (R-GaN) islands and nano-voids were observed on the patterned Al2O3 surfaces, i.e. the flat surface (FS), the inclined surface (IS) and the top surface (TS), respectively. Especially, the crystallographic orientation of R-GaN between the GaN film and the inclined Al2O3 substrate was identified as [Formula], [Formula]. In addition, a rotation by 9° between [Formula] and [Formula] and between [Formula] and [Formula] was found to reduce the lattice mismatch between the GaN film and the Al2O3 substrate. Many TDs in the GaN film were observed on the FS and TS of Al2O3. However, few TDs were observed on the IS. Most of the TDs generated from the FS of Al2O3 were bent to the inclined facet rather than propagating to the GaN surface, resulting in a reduction in the dislocation density. Most of the TDs generated from the TS of Al2O3 were characterized as edge dislocations.</P>

Polycystin 2 (PKD2) is an ion channel that regulates the intracellular calcium ion concentration. Amino acid changes in PKD2 are known to cause autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease(ADPKD), and are possibly associated with many other complex diseases. In an effort to find cSNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms within cDNA sequence) in PKD2, we used direct sequencing analysis to screen the entire coding region of the PKD2 gene. We identified a major nonsynonymous cSNP, Ala190Thr (A190T), in the N-terminal intracellular domain of PKD2. This nonsynonymous cSNP was previously reported as a mutation for ADPKD. However, this study excluded the possibility that the A190T variation was a missense mutation for ADPKD by a thorough clinical evaluation and population study. In 500 genetically unrelated Koreans, the allele frequencies of G and A at the A190T variation were 64% and 36%, respectively. The genotype frequency of the cSNP was not deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. These experimental results indicate that mutational research needs to be confirmed by a thorough clinical evaluation and population study. Furthermore, the A190T variation is implicated as having possible causative roles in the pathogenesis of various ADPKD-related diseases. Intensive population studies should be conducted to address the etiological role of the A190T variation in these ADPKD-related diseases.

Exogenous expression of <I>ANO9</I> in PANC-1 cells significantly increased cell proliferation in cell cultures and in mice. In contrast, knockdown of <I>ANO9</I> in AsPC-1, BxPC-3, and Capan-2 cells strongly inhibited cell proliferation. Mechanistic analysis suggested that physical association of ANO9 with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) underlies ANO9-induced cell proliferation. Knockdown <I>of ANO9</I> augmented the effects of the EGFR inhibitor and the cytotoxic agent on pancreatic cancer cell proliferation. In addition, high ANO9 expression is a poor prognostic factor in patients with pancreatic cancer.</P><P><B>Conclusions:</B></P><P>The ANO9/TMEM16J appears to be a clinically useful prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer and a potential therapeutic target.</P>

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a positive strand RNA virus of the Flaviviridae family and the major cause of post-transfusion non-A, non-B hepatitis. Vaccine development for HCV is essential but has been slowed by poor understanding of the type of immunity that naturally terminates HCV infection. The DNA-based immunization technique offers the potential advantage of including cellular immune responses against conserved internal proteins of a virus, as well as the generation of antibodies to viral surface proteins. Here, we demonstrate that cell lines expressing the HCV core and/or NS3 proteins can induce a specific CTL response in mice, and these results suggest a possibility that the HCV core and NS3 DNA can be used to induce CTL activity against the antigen in mice and can be further developed as a therapeutic and preventive DNA vaccine.

<B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>Single-crystalline diluted magnetic semiconductor GaN:Mn nanowires with controlled Mn concentrations have been successfully synthesized and incorporated into devices (see Figure). These nanowires exhibit Curie temperatures above room temperature, magnetoresistances near room temperature, and spin-dependent transport. The nanowires are used as building blocks for the fabrication of GaN:Mn/n-SiC based light-emitting diodes. <img src='wiley_img/09359648-2005-17-11-ADMA200401706-content.gif' alt='wiley_img/09359648-2005-17-11-ADMA200401706-content'> </P>

Background/Objectives: In this study will explore the impact of quantified-self awareness on consumer information sharing behavior in the mobile social network environment. Methods/Statistical analysis: In this study will confirm the impact of consumers’ quantified-self awareness on their information sharing behavior in the mobile social network environment through experimental research and questionnaire survey. Findings: Based on the theory of self discrepancy and through literature review, this study believes that consumers sense the difference between realistic self and ideal self, society realistic self and society ideal self will make them produce quantified-self awareness and willing to share information. To a certain extent, this study enriches the research on the influencing factors of consumers information sharing behavior. It is of certain significance for enterprises to improve consumers’ quantified-self awareness and carry out marketing activities. Improvements/Applications: In the mobile social network, consumers’ quantified-self awareness is gradually popularized and strengthened. It is of certain significance to explore how quantified self awareness can produce information sharing behavior for consumers.

Suspicion of gastrointestinal amyloidosis in patients without known history of amyloidosis is difficult, but gastrointestinal amyloidosis should be considered in those older than 30year with unexplained diarrhea, weight loss or malabsorption. We experienced a case of an 63-year-old female in patient with rheumatoid arthritis, who have a chronic watery diarrhea caused by colonic amyloidosis. Congo-red stain and immunohistochemical stain for amyloid A protein of colonoscopic pathologic specimen showed positive response. Other organs such as kidney, heart, liver and skin, were not involved by amyloidosis. She was diagnosed to secondary and localized colonic amyloidosis related with rheumatoid arthritis. In spite of anti-rheumatic therapy, our patient did not recover.
