To compare antioxidant activities between organic and conventional cultivation of rice bran, three kinds of rice species-Hopum, Hopyeong, and Yungwang-were selected and cultivated in Chonnam province. After cultivation, rice bran was extracted with 70% methanol and analyzed protective activity against oxidative stress induced-cell death and antioxidant activities such as inhibition of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and lipid peroxidation in hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells. When HepG2 cells were treated with three kinds of rice bran extracts for 24 h and followed by the treatment of 1 mM H2O2, organic Hopum and Hopyeong rice bran showed the higher protective activities against oxidative stress induced-cell death than their conventional cultivated rice brans. Yungkwang rice bran did not showed the difference between organic cultivation and conventional cultivation. Organic Hopum, Hopyeong, and Yungkwang rice bran extracts reduced the intracellular ROS generation induced by 1 mM H2O2 more efficiently than their conventional-cultivated rice bran extracts. However, tested rice bran extracts did not show the strong protective effects on lipid peroxidation. From the study, organic Hopum and Hopyeong rice bran extracts showed the higher antioxidant activities than their conventional cultivations and these results indicate that even though phytonutrient contents of rice bran were not measured, significant difference between two cultivation practices were evident.

Many water bodies used for water supply may contain solid particles with a lower density. These solids are hardly removed in the sedimentation unit due to the own tendency of floating. In order to treat this type of water, the flotation process in known to be an effective method. A series of laboratory experiments has been performed to investigate the effect of natural organic matter(NOM) in raw water on flotation process. Foam formation potential(FFP) could be increase by NOM in raw water, alum is stimulate the trend of FFP to increase. Results of DAF treatment studies show that flotation efficiency can be increase by AOM, such as ethyl ester, sodium propionate, sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate. Meanwhile, flotation efficiency can be decrease by AOM, such as glycerol, starch, pentane, peptone, isoamyl alcohol, humic acid etc. Also, the flotation efficiency by AOM corresponds well the tendency of FFP.
MicroRNA-23a: A Novel Serum Based Diagnostic Biomarker for Lung Adenocarcinoma

Background: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have demonstrated their potential as biomarkers for lung cancer diagnosis. In recent years, miRNAs have been found in body fluids such as serum, plasma, urine and saliva. Circulating miRNAs are highly stable and resistant to RNase activity along with, extreme pH and temperatures in serum and plasma. In this study, we investigated serum miRNA profiles that can be used as a diagnostic biomarker of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods: We compared the expression profile of miRNAs in the plasma of patients diagnosed with lung cancer using an miRNA microarray. The data from this assay were validated by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Results: Six miRNAs were overexpressed and three miRNAs were underexpressed in both tissue and serum from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients. Sixteen miRNAs were overexpressed and twenty two miRNAs were underexpressed in both tissue and serum from adenocarcinoma (AC) patients. Of the four miRNAs chosen for qRT-PCR analysis, the expression of miR-23a was consistent with microarray results from AC patients. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were done and revealed that the level of serum miR-23a was a potential marker for discriminating AC patients from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Conclusion: Although a small number of patients were examined, the results from our study suggest that serum miR-23a can be used in the diagnosis of AC.
