      • Induction of heme oxygenase-1 protects against podocyte apoptosis under diabetic conditions

        Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is an anti-oxidant enzyme normally upregulated in response to oxidant injury. Here we determined the role of HO-1 in podocyte apoptosis in glomeruli of streptozotocin-treated rats and in immortalized mouse podocytes cultured in media containing normal or high glucose. HO-1 expression, its activity, the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 protein, and active caspase-3 fragments were all significantly higher in isolated glomeruli of diabetic rats and in high glucose–treated podocytes. These increases were inhibited by zinc protoporphyrin treatment of the rats or by HO-1 siRNA treatment of the podocytes in culture. The number of apoptotic cells was also significantly increased in the glomeruli of diabetic rats and in high glucose–treated podocytes. Inhibition of HO-1 accentuated the increase in apoptotic cells both in vivo and in vitro. Our findings suggest that HO-1 expression protects against podocyte apoptosis under diabetic conditions.

        Antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of Korean ginseng extract GS-KG9 in a D-galactosamine-induced liver damage animal model

        BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to investigate the improvement effect of white ginseng extract (GS-KG9) on D-galactosamine (Ga1N)-induced oxidative stress and liver injury. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 6 groups. Rats were orally administrated with GS-KG9 (300, 500, or 700 mg/kg) or silymarin (25 mg/kg) for 2 weeks. The rats of the GS-KG9- and silymarin-treated groups and a control group were then intraperitoneally injected Ga1N at a concentration of 650 mg/kg for 4 days. To investigate the protective effect of GS-KG9 against GalN-induced liver injury, blood liver function indicators, anti-oxidative stress indicators, and histopathological features were analyzed. RESULTS: Serum biochemical analysis indicated that GS-KG9 ameliorated the elevation of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in GalN-treated rats. The hepatoprotective effects of GS-KG9 involved enhancing components of the hepatic antioxidant defense system, including glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). In addition, GS-KG9 treatment inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) production induced by GalN treatment in hepatocytes and significantly increased the expression levels of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) proteins, which are antioxidant proteins. In particular, by histological analyses bases on hematoxylin and eosin, Masson"s trichrome, α-smooth muscle actin, and transforming growth factor-β1 staining, we determined that the administration of 500 mg/kg GS-KG9 inhibited hepatic inflammation and fibrosis due to the excessive accumulation of collagen. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that GS-KG9 improves GalN-induced liver inflammation, necrosis, and fibrosis by attenuating oxidative stress. Therefore, GS-KG9 may be considered a useful candidate in the development of a natural preventive agent against liver injury.

        신경향파시의 재인식

        신경향파의 등장 맥락을 바라보는 시각은 그동안 두 갈래의 평가를 낳아왔다. 하나는 순조로운 근대시의 발전을 가로막은 ``생채기``에 불과했다는 부정적 시각이고, 다른 하나는 보다 적극적인 의미를 부여하여 프로문학의 발전도상에서 빚어진 이행기적인 의미로 한정하는 시각이다. 후자는 프로시로 나아가는 전 단계의 자연발생적인 성취를 신경향파시로 범주화한 결과이다. 우리는 이러한 두 가지 견해를 넘어서는 차원에서, 신경향파시가 한국 시의 다양성과 공적 심층성을 중요하게 발전시켰고, 나아가 프로문학의 전 단계로서의 이행기적 속성이 아니라 독자적 미학으로도 매우 중요한 속성을 견지하고 있다고 파악할 수 있다. 그 핵심적인 내적 원리는 다름아닌 민족주의와 낭만성을 ``비극성``이라는 미적 범주로 통합, 결속하였고, 민족 현실의 전체성을 사유한 것 등에서 찾을 수 있다. 신경향파시의 초기 단계는 사회적 약자에 대한 소박한 긍정과 신뢰를 담는 데 멈추었다면, 그러한 한계는 이상화, 박팔양에 의해 극복된다. 이들에 의해 약자에 대한 옹호 지향은 민족주의적 열정과 매개되기도 하고 이산離散이라는 민족적 경험과 깊이 결부되기도 한다. 이렇게 신경향파시는 한국 근대시의 계몽적 출발의 초점을 개인으로 돌리지 아니하고 민족 혹은 집단의 경험으로 돌림으로써 새로운 계몽을 추구하였다. 하지만 신경향파시는 카프로 순조롭게 인적 연속성을 이월하지 못하였다. 그것은 그들 자신의 내적 기질에서 연유하는 것이기도 하고, 외적 기율이나 경험의 차이에서 발생하는 것이기도 하다. 신경향파시가 주목했던 ``민족`` 패러다임은 매우 경험적인 것이었던 데 비해, 프로시가 받아들였던 마르크시즘은 너무도 추상적인 것이었기 때문이었을 것이다. 그리고 신경향파시가 주목했던 ``검``이나 ``신`` 같은 종교적 개념이 소멸하고 일방적으로 과학성으로 경사하게 된 것도 카프로의 이월이 신경향파시의 어떤 가능성을 지워버린 실례로 평가될 만하다. 따라서 우리는 신경향파시가 카프로 이월되어간 진화의 양상과 함께, 카프로 이월하면서 소진된 가능성과 자산을 함께 탐색해볼 수 있을 것이다. A perspective on the appearance of the Anti-Conventional School has produced two different assessments until now. A negative viewpoint is that it was merely a ``wound`` that stoped the smooth development of modern poetry. The other actively attaches meaning to it and sees it as a transitional group organized during the developing process of proletarian literature. The latter is the result of categorizing the spontaneous achievements gained prior to proletarian poetry as the Anti-Conventional School poetry. From the dimension of overcoming these two views, this paper proved that the Anti-Conventional School poetry considerably fostered the diversity and public depth of Korean poetry and further it preserved not transitional properties as a preceding phase of proletarian literature but important features as an independent aesthetics. The central inner principle could be found from none other than the fact that it integrated and united nationalism and romantic ideas into the aesthetic category of ``tragedy`` and thought about the totality of national reality. The Anti-Conventional School poetry ended of expressing naive affirmation and trust in the week of society in the early period, however, its limitations were overcame by Lee, Sang-hwa and Park, P`al-yang. With them, the tendency of supporting the week was bridged to the passion for nationalism or deeply associated with national experience of diaspora. In this way, the Anti-Conventional School poetry pursued a new enlightenment by not turning the focus of enlightening departure of modern Korean poetry to individual but to the experience of a race or group. The Anti-Conventional School poetry, however, could not successfully hand over its features to KAPF. This was coming from their cast of mind and from the difference in external discipline or experience. Also, it was because that the paradigm of ``a race`` the Anti-Conventional School poetry paid attention to was extremely empirical, but Marxism accepted by proletarian poetry was too abstract relatively. And the extinction of the religious concepts such as ``geom``(검, god) or ``shin``(신, god) that received attention of the Anti-Conventional School poetry and the inclination toward science could be considered as examples of removing the possibility of the Anti-Conventional School poetry with the transition to KAPF. Therefore, the exhausted possibility and assets of the Anti-Conventional School poetry could be searched with the aspects of evolution during the transition to KAPF.

        Bucillamine prevents cisplatin-induced ototoxicity through induction of glutathione and antioxidant genes

        <P>Bucillamine is used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. This study investigated the protective effects of bucillamine against cisplatin-induced damage in auditory cells, the organ of Corti from postnatal rats (P2) and adult Balb/C mice. Cisplatin increases the catalytic activity of caspase-3 and caspase-8 proteases and the production of free radicals, which were significantly suppressed by pretreatment with bucillamine. Bucillamine induces the intranuclear translocation of Nrf2 and thereby increases the expression of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS) and glutathione synthetase (GSS), which further induces intracellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2). However, knockdown studies of HO-1 and SOD2 suggest that the protective effect of bucillamine against cisplatin is independent of the enzymatic activity of HO-1 and SOD. Furthermore, pretreatment with bucillamine protects sensory hair cells on organ of Corti explants from cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity concomitantly with inhibition of caspase-3 activation. The auditory-brainstem-evoked response of cisplatin-injected mice shows marked increases in hearing threshold shifts, which was markedly suppressed by pretreatment with bucillamine <I>in vivo</I>. Taken together, bucillamine protects sensory hair cells from cisplatin through a scavenging effect on itself, as well as the induction of intracellular GSH.</P>

        In this paper, we study the signed- DLMS adaptive algorithm of wireless repeater for solving shadow region due to propagation between base station and mobile station. The the signed-DLMS algorithm reduces interference signals from multipath and solves the oscillation problem of repeater by estimation and cancellation. To efficiently reject interference signal. the signed-DLMS adaptive algorithm is applied. The computational complexities of the signed-DLMS are reduced verse standard LMS algorithm. Wireless ICS repeater based on signed-DLMS reduces the cost and is able to increase channel capacities.

        In vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory effects of pegmatite

        Pegmatite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous rock rich in rare elements such as uranium, tungsten, and tantalum with Ca, K, Mg, Fe, Se, Ge, and Ho. We tested in vitro and in vivo assays for the anti-inflammatory activity of pegmatites. We firstly evaluated the suppressive effects of pegmatite on macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with proinflammatory stimuli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to determine nitric oxide (NO) production and TNF-$\alpha$ and IL-6 release. The $IC_{50}$ values of pegmatite exceeded $5,000\;{\mu}g/mL$. Treatment of RAW 264.7 cells with pegmatite significantly inhibited LPS-stimulated NO production and proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-$\alpha$ and IL-6 secretion in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.05). In vivo studies were tested with two animal models of arachidonic acid-induced mouse ear edema and an acetic acid-induced increase in capillary permeability. The pegmatite significantly attenuated ear edema induced by arachidonic acid and reduced the acetic acid-induced increase in capillary permeability in mice (P<0.05) when the pegmatite was administered topically (10 mg per ear) for 24 h. Therefore, pegmatite potentially shows an anti-inflammatory activity in the in vitro and in vivo mice and in the development of newer anti-inflammatory agents as mineral materials.

        해저터널 구난역 플랫폼 화재연기확산 방지를 위한 에어커튼 시스템 차연성능 시뮬레이션 연구

        본 연구는 국내에서 계획하고 있는 호남-제주간 초장대 해저터널에서 철도차량의 화재 발생시 구난역 (Rescue Station)에 정차후 대피자의 안전한 대피경로를 확보하고 플랫폼 내부에 연기가 유입되는 것을 방지하기 위해 구난역 플랫폼과 화재열차 사이에 에어커튼 시스템(Air curtain system)을 설치하여, 15MW급 화재연기에 대한 차단성능 및 최적화방안을 도출하기 위해 다양한 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 시뮬레이션 결과, 모든 CASE에서 15 MW급 화재강도에 발생되는 연기에서도 효과적인 차연성능을 발휘하였으며, CASE1(화재열차 방향으로 15도 분사)와 CASE5(화재열차 방향으로 15도 분사 + 가압송풍)가 구난역 플랫폼 내부에 CO가스 유입이 가장 적은 것으로 도출하였다. 이러한 결과를 통하여 에어커튼 시스템은 초장대 해저터널 구난역에 화재시 플랫폼에 화재연기가 유입되지 않고 안전한 대피 경로를 확보하여 대피자가 서비스 터널로 안전하게 대피하여 인명피해를 최소화 할 수 있는 방재시설로서 활용되기를 기대한다. This study introduce that we studied optimization and possibility of smoke spread prevention with air-curtain system in undersea tunnel named from Ho-Nam to Jeju line in domestic if a fire break out in train. To verify performance, air-curtain system is installed between rescue station platform and each door of passenger car to provide safety route to evacuator and we studied simulation model of various cases about 15 MW fire severity considering domestic specifications. As a result we verified the fact that CASE1(air jet with 15degree toward passenger car) and CASE 5 (air jet with 15degree toward passenger car and pressure air blast from cross passage) is best Smoke Spread Prevention and less inflow carbon monoxide. Through above results, we expect that air-curtain system is one of the facilities for fire safety and provide us safety platform route in undersea tunnel.

        Comparative Morphological Characteristics of Mangrove Oysters

        Three Kinds of mangrove oysters, highly commercial species in tropical waters, were collected in Cocineta Bay, Venezuella in 1976, at the mouth of Hoffman River, Liberia in 1978 and in West Coast of Benzina, Indonesia in 1984. Crassostrea rhizophorae from Venezuella showed some characteristics of most rounded shell form and greatest shell capacity. In addition, he fatness condition of 9.63% topped tht other two species. Crassostrea tulipa inhabiting Liberia was most elongated in outer shell form. Although shell capacity of this species was almost similar to Crassostrea rhizophorae, it took up intermediate position in fatness condition with 8.15%. Crassostrea belcheri from Indonesia, just rounded like C. rhizophorae, showed the biggest values in total weight and outer shell weight but fatness the least with 6.62%
