The Chirisan gneiss complex is composed of various paragneisses and small amounts of orthogneisses metamorphosed in Precambrian, which are intruded by gabbroic rock, porphyritic granite and Namwon granite. The gneiss complex was undergone multimetamorhism that early high-grade progressive metamorphism reached to upper amphibolite facies, later amphibolite and epidote-amphinbolite facies(partially to greenschist facies) were overlapped by retrogressive metamorphism. Major mineral assemblage of those gneisses are biotite-garnet,biotitie-garnet-sillimanite,biotite-garnet-cordierite,biotite-garnet-cordierite-sillimanite. Coexisting minerals of 14 samples were analysed by EPMA. Metamorphic conditions were estimated using various experimental, theoretical geothermometers and geobarometers. They show wide ranges of temperature and pressure as 600∼750℃, 720∼820℃, 420∼550℃ of biotite-garnet, cordierite-garnet, alkali feldspar-plagioclase geothermometer and 4.6~6.2Kb, 4.5~7Kb of cordierite-garnet, plagioclase-garnet geobarometer, respectively. But peak metamorphic condition is about 700℃ with 4.67Kb(X=0.40) inferred by plotting of cordierite composition to the P-T diagram under consideration of H₂0 content. The metamorphic path, according to the inferred P-T conditions with the reaction of coexisting minerals and analyses of various geothermo-barometers, is considered that progressive peak metamorphism reached to upper amphibolite facies with partial melting under 700∼750℃, 4.67Kb of temperature and pressure, and later epidote-amphibolite facies was overlapped by the retrogressive metamorphism.

The College of Engineering was specialized to have a sole function for supplying technical high school teachers in 1977 and referred to as the College of Industrial Education according to the Government's policy. The economic impact mainly due to the oil-crises caused a severe problem to this college, namely discrepancy of supply to demand scale. Accordingly the number of student enrollment was to be fluctuated from 479 in 1979 through 800 in 1979 and 900 in 1980 to 430 in 1981. And the engineering departments have been attached to this Engineering Education College since 1981. These circumstanses met singnificant inefficiency in facility operation. This program aims at providing an overall relocation of the college facilities and preparing the practical system to make the joint-operation possible taking into account circulation, academic stream, budget, maintenance, etc. However this study could not get optimal spacing but some trade-off, considering the current situation.

<P>Arsenic trioxide (As2O3, diarsenic oxide) has recently been reported to induce apoptosis and inhibit the proliferation of various human cancer cells derived from solid tumors as well as hematopoietic malignancies. In this study, the in vitro effects of As2O3 and tetraasrsenic oxide (As4O6) on cell cycle regulation and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)- or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-stimulated cell proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were investigated. Significant dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation was observed when HUVEC were treated with either arsenical compound for 48 h, and flow cytometric analysis revealed that these two arsenical compounds induced cell cycle arrest at the G1 and G2/M phases—the increases in cell population at the G1 and G2/M phase were dominantly observed in As2O3- and As4O6-treated cells, respectively. In both arsenical compounds-treated cells, the protein levels of cyclin A and CDC25C were significantly reduced in a dose-dependent manner, concomitant to the reduced activities of CDK2- and CDC2-associated kinase. In G1-synchronized HUVEC, the arsenical compounds prevented the cell cycle progression from G1 to S phase, which was stimulated by bFGF or VEGF, through the inhibition of growth factor-dependent signaling. These results suggest that arsenical compounds inhibit the proliferation of HUVEC via G1 and G2/M phase arrest of the cell cycle. In addition, these inhibitory effects on bFGF- or VEGF-stimulated cell proliferation suggest antiangiogenic potential of these arsenical compounds. © 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

Background/Aims: No standard chemotherapy has been established for advanced gallbladder cancer. The authors studied the activity and tolerability of a gemcitabine and ox-aliplatin (GEMOX) combination in unresectable gallbladder cancer (GBC). Methods: Adult patients with pathologically confirmed unresectable GBC were prospectively recruited at three centers. No patient had received prior chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Patients received cycles of gemcitabine at 1,000 mg/m2 on day 1, followed by oxaliplatin at 100 mg/m2 on day 2, every 2 weeks. The primary study endpoint was time to progression. Results: Forty patients with unresect-able GBC were enrolled. The median age was 60 years (range, 38 to 79 years). All patients showed good performance status. Of the 33 analyzable patients, 12 achieved partial re-sponse (36%), 17 stable disease (52%), and four progressive disease (12%). No patient achieved a complete response. The tumor control rate was 88%. At a median follow-up of 6.8 months, the median time to progression was 5.3 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.7 to 6.9), and median overall survival was 6.8 months (95% CI, 6.1 to 7.5). Nine of the 40 patients (23%) experienced at least a grade-3 adverse event, but no patient experienced a grade-4 adverse event. Conclu-sions: GEMOX combination therapy is a feasible option and is well tolerated in unresectable GBC. (Gut Liver 2013;7:594-598)

The expression of $p21^{WAF1/ClP1/SDl1}$, one of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, is regulated by a variety of transcription factors including p53 and STAT. Heat shock induces the expression of p21 in a temperature- and time-dependent manner. Although the p21 induction by heat shock has been reported to be controlled by p53, a p53-independent mechanism Is also involved. To understand the p53-independent regulation of heat shock-induced p21 expression, we searched the promoter region of p21 gene and found one or two heat shock element (HSE)-like sequences in human, rat, and mouse. Electromobility shift assay (EMSA) showed that heat shock factor (HSF) could bind to these HSE-like sequences In response to heat shock, even though to a lesser extent than to HSE. In addition, p21 promoter deletion analysis revealed that heat shock activated a p21 deletion promoter construct containing the HSE-like sequences but lacking p53-binding sites, but not a promoter construct containing neither HSE-like sequences nor the p53-responsive element. Furthermore, the p21 induction by heat shook was significantly inhibited in confluent cells in which heat shock-induced HSF activation was reduced. These results suggest that the transcriptional regulation of p21 by heat shock may be mediated through activation and binding to HSE-like sequences of HSF.

<P>The Hsp90-associated protein p23 modulates Hsp90 activity during the final stages of the chaperone pathway to facilitate maturation of client proteins. Previous reports indicate that p23 cleavage induced by caspases during cell death triggers destabilization of client proteins. However, the specific role of truncated p23 (Delta p23) in this process and the underlying mechanisms remain to be determined. One such client protein, hTERT, is a telomerase catalytic subunit regulated by several chaperone proteins, including Hsp90 and p23. In the present study, we examined the effects of p23 cleavage on hTERT stability and telomerase activity. Our data showed that overexpression of Delta p23 resulted in a decrease in hTERT levels, and a down-regulation in telomerase activity. Serine phosphorylation of Hsp90 was significantly reduced in cells expressing high levels of Delta p23 compared with those expressing full-length p23. Mutation analyses revealed that two serine residues (Ser-231 and Ser-263) in Hsp90 are important for activation of telomerase, and down-regulation of telomerase activity by Delta p23 was associated with inhibition of cell growth and sensitization of cells to cisplatin. Our data aid in determining the mechanism underlying the regulation of telomerase activity by the chaperone complex during caspase-dependent cell death.</P>
