        Impaction and ectopic eruption of Permanent teeth can cause various clinical Problems. These teeth are not hopeless. It is possible to use the remaining teeth as anchorage, surgically uncover the impacted tooth, and orthodontically move the tooth into the arch.         Nutrition composition differences among steamed and freeze-dried mature silkworm larval powders made from 3 Bombyx mori varieties weaving different colored cocoons

        The mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori has been one of the most important domestic animals which have provided with silk fibers for weaving fabrics and a food for a protein and lipid source. In addition, various health improvement effects of diverse silkworm larval powders were reported. Recently we found that steamed and freeze-dried mature silkworm larval powder (SMSP) generated using white-jade (also known as Backokjam) silkworm variety extended healthspan and increased resistance to Parkinson's disease in animal models. Because the colors of cocoons in silkworm varieties were caused by altered signal transduction pathways transporting phytochemicals from intestinal lumens to silk glands, we performed the proximate, amino acid, mineral, carbohydrates, fatty acid, and cholesterol composition analyses of SMSPs of 3 silkworm varieties which were weaving light yellow, golden, and red cocoons. Although most of nutrient compositions among 3 SMSPs were similar, there were significant differences in certain amino acids, minerals, and fatty acid compositions. Red silk silkworm (RS)-SMSP had higher contents of crude proteins and total amino acids than other SMSPs. In addition, the ratio of n-3/n-6 unsaturated fatty acids were higher than the other SMSPs. In contrast Golden silk silkworm (GS)-SMSP had higher ratio of potassium/sodium than the other SMSPs. These nutrient analysis results suggested that 3 SMSPs might have common and unique health improvement effects. Thus, further studies in the functionalities of the 3 SMSPs will reveal unknown their health improvements effects.

        Production techniques to Improve the Quality of Steamed and Freeze-Dried Mature Silkworm Larval Powder

        Cooked mature silkworms have received increasing attention as a new source of income for sericultural farms. Quality improvement of these worms as the end-product requires prevention of the following: inclusion of unfertilized silkworm eggs, mixing with impurities, producing undercooked or overcooked mature larvae, and mixing spewed silk substance. Preventing unfertilized eggs and impurities and reducing undercooked or overcooked mature larvae can be achieved by sericultural farms. However, the prevention of spewed silk substance requires the development of new techniques. This study developed new techniques for optimum cold storage temperature, soaking, and hydro-thermal treatment to minimize the spewing of mature larvae prior to steaming: when larvae mature after 7 days on the 5<sup>th</sup> instar, they should be soaked in water at room temperature of 25℃ immediately upon collection and stored at 8℃ for less than 3 days. They should be soaked in boiling water for approximately 10 s immediately before steaming to kill the larvae and cooked with steam. This method allows for the production of high-quality mature larvae without spewed silk substance. These new techniques will considerably improve the production of well-cooked quality mature larvae by minimizing silk substance spewed out from the larvae.

        <P>The nutrient components of 3 differently prepared white jade silkworm (also known as Baek Ok Jam) larval powders (WJSLPs) were examined. A proximate analysis of 3 WJSLPs revealed that steamed and freeze-dried mature silkworm larval powder (SMSP) had the highest protein contents among the 3 WJSLPs. In addition, the ASP, SER, GLY, ALA, TYR, and THR contents in SMSP and freeze-dried mature silkworm larval powder (FMSP) significantly increased compared to those in freeze-dried 3rd day of 5th instar silkworm larval powder (FDSP). Even though SMSP and FMSP had reduced mineral contents compared to those of FDSP, the essential minerals, such as Ca, Mg, K, Na, P, S, Zn, Fe, Mn, and Cu, were highly enriched in SMSP and FMSP. The second most enriched nutrient in the 3 WJSLPs was crude lipids. The 3 WJSLPs showed high contents of Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids, which are one of the most popular health improvement supplements. We recently showed that SMSP could extend the lifespan and prevent the onset and progression of Parkinson's disease in Drosophila models (Nguyen et al., 2016). Thus, further studies in the functionalities of the 3 WJSLPs will reveal their unknown health improvement effects.         Alcaligenes sp.와 Pseudomonas sp.의 공동배양조건에서 박테리아 생장 및 인제거에 미치는 두 종 중금속의 상호적인 독성효과 평가

        본 연구는 Alcaligenes sp.와 Pseudomonas sp. 균주를 2종 혼합 배양 시, 혼합균주의 생장 및 인 제거에 5종의 중금속(Cd,Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni)이 미치는 저해효과를 정량적으로 평가하고자 수행되었다. 단일 중금속 처리 시 중금속별 Alcaligenessp.와 Pseudomonas sp. 균주의 IC<sub>50</sub>는 Cd 0.75 mg/L, Cu 10.93 mg/L, Zn 7.08 mg/L, Pb 13.3 mg/L, Ni 15.78 mg/L 인 것으로 나타났다. 중금속 2종 처리 시 IC<sub>50</sub>는 Cd + Cu 처리구에서 가장 낮은 농도를 보였고, Ni + Pb 처리구에서 가장 높은 농도를 보였다. 단일 중금속 처리 시 중금속별 EC<sub>50</sub> 값은 Cd 0.54 mg/L, Cu 11.08 mg/L, Zn 6.14 mg/L, Pb 9.33mg/L 및 Ni 13.81 mg/L이었다. 2종의 중금속 혼합 처리구별 EC<sub>50</sub>은 Cd + Zn 처리구에서 가장 낮은 농도, Zn + Ni처리구에서 가장 높은 농도를 보였다. 2종 혼합 균주에 대한 2종 중금속 처리 결과 도출된 IC<sub>50</sub> 및 EC<sub>50</sub> 값을 기반중금속 별 상호작용 평가 결과, 대부분 길항작용을 보이는 것으로 나타났으나, Cu + Ni 처리구에서는 상승작용을 보이는 것이 확인되었다. 따라서 본 연구 결과는 미생물을 이용한 오폐수 정화 처리 시 미생물의 성장 및 인 제거에 미치는 중금속의 독성으로 인한 저해효과에 대한 기초 자료를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. This study was initiated to quantitatively evaluate the inhibitory effects of five heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni) on bacterial growth and phosphorus removal in the binary culture of Alcaligenes sp. plus Pseudomonas sp. IC<sub>50</sub> values of Alcaligenes sp. plus Pseudomonas sp. for Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni were 0.75, 10.93, 7.08, 13.30, and 15.78 mg/L, respectively. For the binary treatments of heavy metals, IC<sub>50</sub> was the lowest in the treatment of Cd + Cu, whereas, it was the highest in the Ni + Pb treatment. The EC<sub>50</sub> values for Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni were 0.54, 11.08, 6.14, 9.33, and 13.81 mg/L, respectively. For the binary treatments of heavy metals, EC<sub>50</sub> was the lowest in the Cd + Zn, whereas, the highest in the Zn + Ni. Based on both IC<sub>50</sub> and EC<sub>50</sub> values for the binary culture of bacteria with the binary mixtures of heavy metals, the most interactive effect was found to be antagonistic, though the only synergistic effect was found in Cu + Ni treatment. Therefore, our results can provide basic data on the toxic effects of heavy metals on the bacterial growth and phosphorus removal in the wastewater treatment process.

      • Antiproliferative and Apoptosis-Inducing Activities of 4-Isopropyl-2,6-bis(1-phenylethyl)phenol Isolated from Butanol Fraction of <i>Cordyceps bassiana</i>

        <P>The <I>Cordyceps</I> species have been widely used for treating various cancer diseases. Although the Cordyceps species have been widely known as an alternative anticancer remedy, which compounds are responsible for their anticancer activity is not fully understood. In this study, therefore, we examined the anticancer activity of 5 isolated compounds derived from the butanol fraction (Cb-BF) of <I>Cordyceps bassiana</I>. For this purpose, several cancer cell lines such as C6 glioma, MDA-MB-231, and A549 cells were employed and details of anticancer mechanism were further investigated. Of 5 compounds isolated by activity-guided fractionation from BF of Cb-EE, KTH-13, and 4-isopropyl-2,6-bis(1-phenylethyl)phenol, Cb-BF was found to be the most potent antiproliferative inhibitor of C6 glioma and MDA-MB-231 cell growth. KTH-13 treatment increased DNA laddering, upregulated the level of Annexin V positive cells, and altered morphological changes of C6 glioma and MDA-MB-231 cells. In addition, KTH-13 increased the levels of caspase 3, caspase 7, and caspase 9 cleaved forms as well as the protein level of Bax but not Bcl-2. It was also found that the phosphorylation of AKT and p85/PI3K was also clearly reduced by KTH-13 exposure. Therefore, our results suggest KTH-13 can act as a potent antiproliferative and apoptosis-inducing component from <I>Cordyceps bassiana</I>, contributing to the anticancer activity of this mushroom.</P>

        양잠농가의 소득증대 및 산업기반 확대를 위한 새로운 형태의 고 부가가치 양잠산물 창출을 통하여 현재까지 섭취가 어려웠던 5령4일부터 숙잠기 누에의 식용화를 위한 가공기술을 개발하였다. 농민들도 쉽게 가공이 가능하도록 생누에를 열수에 침지하여 삶거나 수증기로 쪄서 익혀 본 결과 누에의 몸체와 더불어 누에체내에 들어 있는 견사선의 섭취가 가능함은 물론 맛도 좋은 것으로 나타났다. 상기 기술은 원천기술로서 향후 일반식품, 건강기능식품, 화장품, 애완동물용 사료 등으로의 광범위한 활용이 예상돼, 양잠농가 소득증대와 산업기반 확대에 큰 기여를 할 것으로 기대된다. To increase the income of sericultural farms and expand sericulture industry, new high value-added products of sericulture which are beyond current products like 5th instar 3 day dried silkworm, male pupa and silkworm dongchunghacho are needed. For this sericulture product diversification, it is in desperate need of the edible processing method after 5th instar 4 day silkworm that silkgland formation is rapidly in progress during the larva periods. So far it was hard to eat because of silkgland formation in their body. So we try to boil and steam frozen-, dried-, and livingsilkworm to develop low-cost edible processing methods for farmers. As the result, the silkgland of frozen and dried silkworm was not degenerated, so silkgland in their body was not edible. But in the case of living silkworm, the silkgland of mature silkworm was degenerated by boil and steam treatment, so the body and silkgland of silkworm were not only edible but also tasted good. Then the dried silkworm was easily powdered and there was no problem when it was eaten. This source technology can be widely used in the general food industry, health functional food cosmetics, pet food and so on, so it is predictable that this will contribute to increase the income of sericulture farms and expand sericultural industry.
