Background: Paraquat is a bipyridyl compound, and when ingested, concentrated paraquat can cause either rapid death from multisystem failure and cardiovascular shock or delayed death from progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Paraquat is poorly absorbed by inhalation, but when ingested orally, severe illness can occur. Death usually occurs within 2 days if more than 50 ㎎/㎏ of paraquat is ingested . The most important prognostic indicator is the quantity of paraquat absorbed, as shown by the plasma paraquat concentration, and the prognostic indication depends mostly on the description given by the patients and their families about the amount of paraquat ingested, which is often underestimated or overestimagted. For these reasons, we tried to compare the plasma paraquat concentrations with amount of paraquat described by patients or their families. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 59 patients with acute paraquat poisoning from February 1998 through February 1999, the paraquat concentrations in plasma were measured at Presbyterian Medical Center by using high performance liquid chromatography. Results: There was a striking discrepancy between the plasma paraquat concentration and the ingested amount described by the patients or their families. Conclusion: We recommend that the plasma paraquat concentration be measured in patients being treated for acute paraquat poisoning.

Objective : The use of herbal therapy is becoming an increasingly attractive approach for the treatment of various inflammatory disorders. The Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma is popular in Aisa as a traditional herbal medicine. Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma is a species of the ginger family(Zingiberacease). Method : This study was performed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma extract by the methods of "carrageenan induced paw edema" and "Lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory mediators in mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells". Result : We suggest that Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma extract decreased paw volume induced by plantar injection of carrageenan. Also Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma extract inhibited nitric oxide, prostaglandin E₂production and induced nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2 protein expression in Mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells stimulated with lipopolysaccharide. Conclusion : This study shows that Alpiniae officinari Rhizoma extract seems to have anti-inflammatory effect by inhibition of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E_(2) production and nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2 protein expression.
Current update on immunization in cirrhosis

Immunization can reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with cirrhosis. Immunizations against hepatitis A and B viruses, influenza and pneumococcus are recommended in cirrhotic patients. Annual influenza immunization can be done in cirrhotic patients, and pneumococcal vaccination is also recommended. Vaccination against hepatitis A is recommended in non-immunized cirrhotic patients. Vaccination against hepatitis B is recommended in every cirrhotic patient with no serological markers. Few data regarding vaccination coverage are available, but studies suggest that immunization rates are too low in this population. Therefore, immunizations for vaccine preventable infections should be considered in all cirrhotic patients.

Vaccinations for Adults with Chronic Liver Disease

생리활성을 지닌 신경펩타이드의 구조와 활성간의 관계를 규명하기 위하여 고상법으로 합성한 세종류의 neuropeptide γ(mammalian-,trout- 그리고 goldfish-neuropeptide γ)를 사용하여 연구하였다. Circular dichroism spectra에 의하면 mammalian-,trout- 와 goldfish-neuropeptide γ는 완충액 조건하에 모두 random한 구조를 나타내었다. 중성 및 산성 지질 존재 하에서, mammalian-과 trout- neuropeptide γ는 여전히 random한 구조를 취하였다. 그러나, goldfish-neuropeptide γ는 중성 및 산성지질하에서 부분적으로 α-helix구조를 나타내었다. 장관 수축활성에 있어서는 carp 장관, guinea-pig 회장 그리고 rat십이지장에 대하여 비교하였다. Carp에 대해서는 goldfish-neuropeptide γ= trout- neuropeptide γ>mammalian-neuropeptide γ순으로 활서이 나타났다. 그러나, guinea-pig 회장과 rat십이지장에 대해서 mammalian-neuropeptide γ는 어류 유래성 neuropeptide g들 보다 높은 수축활성을 나타내었다. 이러한 결과들은 neuropeptide γ들이 종-특이적인 활성을 나타낸다는 것을 제시한다. The relationship between structure and biological activity was studied on the three neuropeptides(mammalian-,trout- and goldfish-neuropeptide γ)that were syntheized by the solid-phase method. Circular dichroism spectra showed that mammalian-,trout- and goldfish-neuropeptide γadopted an undered structure in buffer solution. In the presence od neutral and acidic liposomes, mammalian-and trout- neuropeptide γ also took a random structure. However, goldfish-neuropeptide γ took an α-helical structure in acidic liposomes. The intestinal motility response was investigated with carp interstines, guinea-pig ileums and rat duodenums. In case of carp intestine, contractine activity was as follows:goldfish-neuropeptide γ= trout- neuropeptide γ> mammalian-neuropeptide γ. On the other hand, the contracile activity of mammalian-neuropeptide γ was more potent than trout- and goldfish-neuropeptide γ in the guinea-pig ileums and rat duodenums. these results suggest that neuropeptide γs showed the species-specific activity.
Physicochemical and Sensory Properties of Restructured Jerky with Four Additives

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect on properties of restructured jerky by the addition volume of additives. The treatments were divided into glutinous rice flour, potato starch, soybean and acorn powder. Moisture content, water activity ($a_w$), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), color, yield and sensory evaluation were performed. The moisture contents of four types of restructured jerkies were in the range of 8.92-12.47%, and were lower than that of the control (17.92%). Water activity tended to decreased with increasing addition of all treatments. The restructured jerkies containing glutinous rice flour, potato starch, soybean and acorn powder had lower TBARS than the control. The drying yield tended to increase with increasing amount of additives. In the sensory evaluation results, the highest overall acceptability was found in jerky containing glutinous rice flour, potato starch, and acorn powder when the addition was 9%, while that for soybean powder was determined to be 5%. These results suggest that 9% additions of glutinous rice flour, potato starch or acorn, or 5% soybean powder are optimal addition volumes for the preparation of restructured jerkies.
