<P><I>Background and Methods:</I> Numerous genetic studies have mapped asthma susceptibility genes to a region on chromosome 5q31-33 in several populations. This region contains a cluster of cytokines and other immune-related genes important in immune response. In the present study, to determine the genetic variations and patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD), we resequenced all the exons and promoter regions of the 29 asthma candidate genes in the chromosome 5q31-33 region. <I>Results:</I> We identified a total of 314 genetic variants, including 289 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 22 insertion/deletion polymorphisms and 3 microsatellites. Standardized variance data for allele frequency revealed substantial differences in SNP allele frequencies among different ethnic groups. Interestingly, significant ethnic differences were observed mainly in intron SNPs. LD block analysis using 174 common SNPs with a frequency of >10% disclosed strong LD within most candidate genes. No significant LD was observed across genes, except for one LD block (CD14-IK block). Gene-based haplotype analyses showed that 1-5 haplotype-tagging SNPs may be used to define the six or fewer common haplotypes with a frequency of >5%, regardless of the number of SNPs. <I>Conclusion:</I> Overall, our results provide useful information for the identification of immune-mediated disease genes in the chromosome 5q31-33 region, as well as valuable evidence for gene-based haplotype analysis in disease association studies.</P><P>Copyright © 2006 S. Background: Bacterial and viral infections are closely related to development and exacerbation of asthma in children. The incidences of both asthma and the latent infection of tuberculosis are increasing in Korea. This study aimed to determine whether the prevalence of the latent infection of tuberculosis could be higher in asthmatic children compared to non-allergic children. Methods: We enrolled 30 asthmatic patients and 26 nonallergic patients who visited our hospital between 2008 and 2010. Total immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, specific IgE levels and total eosinophil counts were measured. QuantiFERON-TB Gold (Cellestis Ltd., Carnegie, Victoria, Australia) was used to check for the status of the latent tuberculosis infection in both groups. Results: The positive response rate to QuantiFERON-TB Gold was significantly higher in the asthmatic patients than in the nonallergic children (67% vs. 38%, odds ratio=3.2; 95% confidence interval, 1.07∼9.57). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate the higher incidence of the latent infection of tuberculosis in pediatric asthmatic patients. (Korean J Asthma Allergy Clin Immunol 2012;32:101-106)

<P>Diagnosis of asthma is often challenging in primary-care physicians due to lack of tools measuring airway obstruction and variability. Symptom-based diagnosis of asthma utilizing objective diagnostic parameters and appropriate software would be useful in clinical practice. A total of 302 adult patients with respiratory symptoms responded to a questionnaire regarding asthma symptoms and provoking factors. Questions were asked and recorded by physicians into a computer program. A definite diagnosis of asthma was made based on a positive response to methacholine bronchial provocation or bronchodilator response (BDR) testing. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the significance of questionnaire responses in terms of discriminating asthmatics. Asthmatic patients showed higher total symptom scores than non-asthmatics (mean 5.93 vs. 4.93; <I>p</I><0.01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified that response to questions concerning the following significantly discriminated asthmatics; wheezing with dyspnea, which is aggravated at night, and by exercise, cold air, and upper respiratory infection. Moreover, the presence of these symptoms was found to agree significantly with definite diagnosis of asthma (by kappa statistics). Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that the diagnostic accuracy of symptom-based diagnosis was high with an area under the curve of 0.647±0.033. Using a computer-assisted symptom-based diagnosis program, it is possible to increase the accuracy of diagnosing asthma in general practice, when the facilities required to evaluate airway hyperresponsiveness or BDR are unavailable.</P>

The remaining life estimation for the aged components in power plants as well as chemical plants are very important because mechanical properties of the components are degraded with time of service exposure in the high temperature. Since it is difficult to take specimens from the operating components to evaluate mechanical properties of components, accelerated aging technique are needed to estimate and analyse the material degradation. In the this study, test materials with 4 different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at 630℃. And tensile test, K_(IC) test, hardness test and Scanning Electron Microscope analysis were performed in order to evaluate the degradation of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels.
