Previously, we mapped the qSPP7 QTL affecting the number of spikelets per panicle (SPP) on rice chromosome 7 using near-isogenic line (NIL WH29001) derived from an interspecific cross between the japonica ‘Hwaseong’ and O. minuta. In the present study, we confirmed this QTL using progeny derived from a cross between IL102, a WH29001 sister line and Hwaseong. Genetic analysis determined that qSPP7 was located between a KASP marker KJ07-049 and RM21605. The O. minuta segment on chromosome 7 introgressed into the Hwaseong background was associated with an increase in SPP. The panicle structure of IL102 revealed that not only the number of SPP increased significantly, but also the number of branches per panicle increased as compared to Hwaseong suggesting that the donor allele of qSPP7 promotes branching in the genetic background of Hwaseong. Linkage analysis indicated that qEhd1 on chromosome 10 is involved in the difference in heading date of IL102 and Hwaseong. Experiments under 3 different day length conditions revealed that IL102 always showed earlier heading and higher SPP as compared to Hwaseong indicating that the effect of qSPP7 in the Hwaseong background was not dependent on photoperiod, and SPP increased in proportion to the number of days to heading.

A total of 310 BC2F2 lines derived from the cross of OM5930/N22 were evaluated for heat stress at flowering. Genetic map was set up with 264 polymorphic SSRs to detect linkage to the target traits. The map covers 2,741.63 cM with an average interval of 10.55 cM between two marker loci. Markers associated with heat tolerance were located mostly on chromosomes 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 11. The proportion of phenotypic variation explained by each QTL ranged from 17.1% for RM160 to 36.2% for RM3586. Four QTLs were detected for filled grains per panicle on chromosome 4 at the interval of RM468 - RM7076 and RM241 - RM26212, explaining 13.1 and 31.0% of the total phenotypic variation, respectively. Two QTLs controling unfilled grain percentage was also detected at loci RM554 and RM3686 on chromosome 3 explaining 25.0 and 11.2% of the total phenotypic variance. One QTL was detected for 1,000-grain weight located at the locus RM103 on chromosome 6, explaining 30.6% of the total phenotypic variance. Also, a QTL at the locus RM5749 on chromosome 4 was identified which explained 10.8% of the total phenotypic variance of grain yield. A single QTL at the interval of RM3586- RM160 on chromosome 3 was detected in conformity with the QTL findings for heat tolerance in previous studies.

Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), a negative regulator of insulin signaling, has served as a potential drug target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The MeOH extracts of twenty-nine medicinal plants, traditionally used in Vietnam as anti-diabetes agents, were investigated for PTP1B inhibitory activity in vitro. The results indicated that, most materials showed moderate to strong inhibitory activity with IC50 values ranging from 3.4 mg/mL to 35.1 mg/mL; meanwhile, eleven extracts (37.9%) could demonstrate PTP1B activity with IC50 values less than 15.5 mg/mL; sixteen extracts (55.2%) could demonstrate PTP1B activity with IC50 values ranging from 15.5 mg/mL to 35.1 mg/mL. The study may provide a proof, at least in a part, for the ethno-medical use in diabetes disease of these plants.

We verified that the apoptosis activities were examined by DNA fragmentation, flow cytometric analysis with annexin V staining, activation of caspase-3, and cytochrome c release. In the result, a- and b-eudesmol induced DNA fragmentation in HL-60 cells at a concentration of 80 mM, respectively. Additionally, pro-apoptotic cells sorted by flow cytometry analysis were detected in HL-60 cells to 31.77 and 29.67% with a- and b-eudesmol of 80 mM. Thus, both a- and b-eudesmol exerted caspase-3 activation and cytochrome c release at 80 mM in HL-60 cells. These results are firstly reported that the sesquiterpenes, a- and b-eudesmol are apoptosis inducers through mitochondria-dependent caspase cascade in HL-60 cells.
