        Effect of Sildenafil on Neuropathic Pain and Hemodynamics in Rats

        Purpose: The inhibition of phosphodiesterase 5 produces an antinociception through the increase of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), and increasing cGMP levels enhance the release of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Furthermore, this phosphodiesterase 5 plays a pivotal role in the regulation of the vasodilatation associated to cGMP. In this work, we examined the contribution of GABA receptors to the effect of sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor, in a neuropathic pain rat, and assessed the hemodynamic effect of sildenafil in normal rats. Materials and Methods: Neuropathic pain was induced by ligation of L5/6 spinal nerves in Sprague-Dawley male rats. After observing the effect of intravenous sildenafil on neuropathic pain, GABAA receptor antagonist (bicuculline) and GABAB receptor antagonist (saclofen) were administered prior to delivery of sildenafil to determine the role of GABA receptors in the activity of sildenafil. For hemodynamic measurements, catheters were inserted into the tail artery. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were measured over 60 min following administration of sildenafil. Results: Intravenous sildenafil dose-dependently increased the withdrawal threshold to the von Frey filament application in the ligated paw. Intravenous bicuculline and saclofen reversed the antinociception of sildenafil. Intravenous sildenafil increased the magnitude of MAP reduction at the maximal dosage, but it did not affect HR response. Conclusion: These results suggest that sildenafil is active in causing neuropathic pain. Both GABAA and GABAB receptors are involved in the antinociceptive effect of sildenafil. Additionally, intravenous sildenafil reduces MAP without affecting HR.

        The Role of Long Noncoding RNAs in Antiestrogen Resistance in Breast Cancer: An Overview and Update

        As a standard treatment, endocrine therapy has dramatically enhanced the prognosis of patients with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer, which accounts for nearly 70% of all breast cancers. Antiestrogen drugs such as tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors are the standard treatment options for ERα-positive breast cancer. However, acquired antiestrogen resistance is still the leading cause of disease recurrence and progression. Evidence has shown that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an essential role in the development of antiestrogen resistance in ER-positive breast cancer and can serve as biomarkers or potential therapeutic targets. This review highlights the role of lncRNAs in the development of antiestrogen resistance in breast cancer.

        Restorative Justice in Taiwan : An Overview

        대만의 법무부가 이제 막 처음으로 “회복적 사법 프로그램”의 도입에 착수하고 있음에도 불구하고, 2000년 이후 이 계획은 공적 담론과 학계 연구의 중심에 있어 왔다. 이러한 회복적 사법 촉구의 배경에는 다음과 같은 것들이 있다. 전통적으로, 식민지배 이후 대만 사회는 공식적이고 투명한 사법기관들을 비공식적인 기관들이 대체하는 ‘안으로는 유교적, 밖으로는 법률 존중주의적’ 사회로 묘사되어 왔다. 대만 사람들에게는 대체적 분쟁해결수단을 널리 활용해 온 오랜 역사가 있으며, 얼마 전부터 정부는 사법적 인권을 고취시키자는 압력도 계속 받고 있다. ‘당사자주의’의 도입은 피해자의 권리 보장에 효과적이지 않은 것처럼 여겨진다. 사형제도 폐지라는 논란이 많은 이슈도 피해자 운동의 또 다른 흐름이다. 복수의 목적을 달성하기 위한 형사사법제도의 개혁은 정부의 우선적인 과제 중 하나다. 이 논문에서는 회복적 사법의 세 가지 실용적인 유형에 대하여 언급하고자 한다: 소년사법제도, 참여식 사법, 그리고 형사사건에 있어서의 중재이다. 끝으로 필자는 2000년 법무부가 추진하였던 회복적 사법 프로그램의 배경에 대하여 살펴보기 위하여, 현재의 법적 구조에 대하여 비판적으로 검토해 보고자 한다. Although the ministry of justice in Taiwan is just beginning to initiate the first “restorative justice programme”, the idea has been the focus of both official discourse and academic investigation since 2000. There are a few forces behind this newly emerged restorative justice urge. Traditionally, post colonization Taiwan society is described as an ‘inwardly Confucian, outwardly legalistic’ (內儒外法) society, in which informal institutions preempted the transplanted formal legal institutions. The Taiwan people have a long history of using alternative dispute resolution mechanism. More recently, the government is under increasing pressure of promoting judicial human right. The introduction of adversary system can not be deemed beneficial of promoting victim’s right. The controversial issue of abolishing death penalty also rises another wave of victim movement. The reform of criminal justice system to serve multiple purposes has become one of the prioritized government agenda. In this article, I describe three practical forms of restorative justice: juvenile justice system (少年司法制度), participatory justice (參與式司法), and mediation service for criminal cases (刑事案件調解). In the end, I critically review the current legal structure to address the background of the 2010 restorative justice programme under Ministry of Justice (法務部修復式司法試行方案).

        Molecular Cloning and Characterization of clyA Genes in Various Serotypes of Salmonella enterica

        Cytolysin A (ClyA) is a pore-forming hemolytic protein encoded by the clyA gene. It has been identified in Salmonella enterica serovars Typhi and Paratyphi A. To identify and characterize the clyA genes in various Salmonella enterica strains, 21 different serotypes of strains isolated from clinical specimens were presently examined. Full-length clyA genes were found in S. enterica serovar Brandenburg, Indiana, Panama, and Schwarzengrund strains by polymerase chain reaction amplification. The ClyA proteins from these four strains showed >97% amino acid identity to that of S. enterica serovar Typhi. Although all four serovars expressed detectable levels of ClyA as determined by Western blot analysis, they did not show a strong hemolytic effect on blood agar, indicating that ClyA may not be efficiently expressed or secreted. Escherichia coli transformed with clyA genes from the four serovars enhanced production of ClyA proteins and hemolytic activities to a level similar to S. enterica serovar Typhi ClyA. The present results suggest that ClyA may play a role in the pathogenesis of S. enterica serovar Brandenburg, Indiana, Panama and Schwarzengrund.

        Associations of Plasma Glucagon Levels with Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate, Albuminuria and Diabetic Kidney Disease in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

        Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by elevated fasting glucagon and impaired suppression of postprandial glucagon secretion, which may participate in diabetic complications. Therefore, we investigated the associations of plasma glucagon with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), albuminuria and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in T2DM patients.Methods: Fasting glucagon and postchallenge glucagon (assessed by area under the glucagon curve [AUCgla]) levels were determined during oral glucose tolerance tests. Patients with an eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and/or a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥30 mg/g who presented with diabetic retinopathy were identified as having DKD.Results: Of the 2,436 recruited patients, fasting glucagon was correlated with eGFR and UACR (r=–0.112 and r=0.157, respectively; P<0.001), and AUCgla was also correlated with eGFR and UACR (r=–0.267 and r=0.234, respectively; P<0.001). Moreover, 31.7% (n=771) presented with DKD; the prevalence of DKD was 27.3%, 27.6%, 32.5%, and 39.2% in the first (Q1), second (Q2), third (Q3), and fourth quartile (Q4) of fasting glucagon, respectively; and the corresponding prevalence for AUCgla was 25.9%, 22.7%, 33.7%, and 44.4%, respectively. Furthermore, after adjusting for other clinical covariates, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs; 95% confidence intervals) for DKD in Q2, Q3, and Q4 versus Q1 of fasting glucagon were 0.946 (0.697 to 1.284), 1.209 (0.895 to 1.634), and 1.521 (1.129 to 2.049), respectively; the corresponding ORs of AUCgla were 0.825 (0.611 to 1.114), 1.323 (0.989 to 1.769), and 2.066 (1.546 to 2.760), respectively. Additionally, when we restricted our analysis in patients with glycosylated hemoglobin <7.0% (n=471), we found fasting glucagon and AUCgla were still independently associated with DKD.Conclusion: Both increased fasting and postchallenge glucagon levels were independently associated with DKD in T2DM patients.

        중국에는 역사가 없는가? -지나사, 동양사에서 중국사에 이르기까지-

        본고에서는 우선 나카 미치요(那珂通世)의 『지나통사(支那通史)』와 구와바라지쓰조(桑原?藏)의 『중등동양사(中等東洋史)』라는 두 텍스트를 대상으로 메이지(明治) 시기 일본의 지나사와 동양사의 중국/동아시아 역사서술의 특징을 살펴보았다. 전자는 영국과 프랑스의 문명사관의 영향을 받아, 중국은 찬란한 고대문화를 가지고 있지만 진(秦)나라 이후 정체되어 발전하지 못하였다고 여겼다. 후자는 랑케를 대표로 하는 독일 근대사학의 민족사 서술을 계승하여, 중국을 포함하는 "동아시아"의 역사를 한족 및 주변의 여러 민족 사이의 경쟁사로 서술하였다. 다음, 청조 말기의 사학자 천칭녠(陳慶年)의 『중국역사교과서(中國歷史敎科書)』가 구와바라 지쓰조의 『중등동양사』를 수정하고 청조 학부에서 천칭녠의 개정본을 수정함으로써 "동양사"가 청조 정부가 인정하고 광범위하게 유통되는 공공지식의 "중국사"로 변하는 과정을 살펴보았다. 천칭녠은 중국의 전통적인 화이질서와 정통사관에 근거하여 구와바라 원저의 중원 왕조와 주변의 관계를 주종으로 나누지 않는 "동양사" 서술을, 중원 왕조를 주로 하고 주변을 종으로 하며 중원왕조를 정통으로 하고 주변을 비정통으로 하는 "중국사" 서술로 바꾸었다. The purpose of this article is to investigate how Chinese history was described in Meiji Japan and late Imperial China under the influence of modern European historiography. Firstly, the author surveyed the formation of Japan`s historical descriptions of China and East Asia by analyzing two popular textbooks of Chinese history published at the end of 19th century: a Brief History of China written by Michiyo Naka, and Secondary Oriental History Textbook by Jitsuzo Kuwabara. Naka, a student of Yukichi Fukuzawa, who was influenced by the progressive views of history from England and France, thought China had a glorious ancient times but had remained unchanging since the Qing Dynasty. On the other hand, Kuwabara, grounded in German historian L. Ranke`s nationalistic view of history, described the Oriental History as a history of fight and conflict among Han Chinese and their surrounding ethnic groups. Secondly, the author analyzed the Textbook of Chinese History written by Chen Qingnian, a historian in late Qing period. Chen based his work on Kuwabara`s Oriental History but rewrote it into a Chinese history in accordance with the traditional Confucian thought of Huayi (suzerain- subject relationship between China and the surrounding areas). Differing from Kuwabara, who mapped out the Chinese dynasties and its surroundings equivalently, Chen described the Chinese dynasties to be superior to the surroundings. After being revised in more than 400 places according to the orders of the Qing government, Chen`s book was approved as an authorized textbook and played a role in the formation of Chinese national identity in the early 20th century.

      • Photocatalytic study of Zinc Oxide with bismuth doping prepared by spray pyrolysis

        The unintentionally doped and bismuth (Bi) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) films were prepared by spray pyrolysis at $450^{\circ}C$ with zinc acetate and bismuth nitrate precursor. The n-type conduction with concentration $6.13{\times}10^{16}cm^{-3}$ can be observed for the unintentionally doped ZnO. With the increasing of bismuth nitrate concentration in precursor, the p-type conduction can be observed. The p-type concentration $4.44{\times}10^{17}cm^{-3}$ can be achieved for the film with the Bi/Zn atomic ratio 5% in the precursor. The photoluminescence spectroscopy with HeCd laser light source was studied for films with different Bi doping. The photocatalytic activity for the unintentionally doped and Bi-doped ZnO films was studied through the photodegradation of Congo red under UV light illumination. The effects of different Bi contents on photocatalytic activity are studied and discussed. Results show that appropriate Bi doping in ZnO can increase photocatalytic activity.
