Ecological studies on the upper streams of the North Han River

Biotic aspects were analyzed employing by physical, chemical and biological methods. JinDong streams which was situated at the upper basin of the North Han River is a typical freshwater stream in Korean Peninsula. 58 species of attached algae were identified 26 genera, 19 families, 9 orders. Aquatic insects were classified into number of 76 species, 26 families, 5 orders. Collected fishes were numbered in 17 species, 8 families including 10(58.8%) endemic species to Korea. Especially, we added 3 species of Ladislavia taczanowskii. Cottus poecilopterus, and Cobitis rotundicaudata to previous report on fish community in the JinDong stream. The fauna of fishes in the JinDong stream were divided into four groups; (1) Brachymystax-Moroco (2) Ladislavia-Moroco (3)Cobitis-Zacco and. (4) Zacco-Moroco which was formed continuous communities. Also, it it considered that contributed to the balanced proportion of herbivores, canivores and omnovores on fishes ecological niche in harmony. JinDong stream was characterized to be clean water in the phase of B-mesosaprobic and Oligosaprobic.
Single-Step Solid-State Synthesis of CeMgAl11O19:Tb Phosphor

The green-emitting CeMgAl11O19:Tb (CMAT) phosphor has been prepared at 1200 C by the simple solid-state reaction using AlF3 as a self-flux. This preparation temperature is much lower than those (1500-1700 C) for conventional solid-state reaction and spray pyrolysis method. In particular, the complete process to produce high-quality phosphor particles was carried out through the single-step heat treatment of the mixture of corresponding oxide-type metal sources. An addition of AlF3 as a self-flux significantly decreased the crystallization temperature of CMAT with plate-like shape. The particle morphology could be controlled from plate-like to spherical by using H3BO3 as an additional flux. Thus, an optimal morphology and luminescence characteristics of CMAT were achieved when both AlF3 and H3BO3 fluxes were simultaneously used. Compared with conventional solid-state process, which is accompanied by the calcination step(s), and other alternative liquid solution techniques such as sol-gel method and spray pyrolysis, no use of active precursors and liquid media that are harmful to the environment is a distinctive advantage for the industrial purpose.

Clinical Usefulness of Telomerase and hTERT for the Detection of Colon Cancer in Ulcerative Colitis Background/Aims: Telomerase and telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), are specifically expressed in cancer cells, making them candidate markers for the early detection of cancer. The aims of our study were to determine whether these assays may be useful in the diagnosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) developed in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. Methods: Luminal washings and biopsies were collected during colonoscopy in 66 patients; 34 with CRC, 21 with UC, and 11 controls. Telomerase activity was detected by telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) and hTERT was assayed by RT-PCR Results: Telomerase activity was detected in biopsies from 33/34 (97%) CRC, 14/21 (67%) UC, and 3/11 (27%) controls. hTERT was positive in biopsies from 32/34 (94%) CRC, 12/21 (57%) UC, and 5/11 (45%) controls. In washing fluid, 21/34 (62%) of CRC patients were positive for telomerase, but UC patients and controls were negative. The sensitivity of telomerase for CRC was 97% in tissues and 62% in washing fluid. The specificity of telomerase in washing fluid was 100%, whereas the specificity of telomerase or hTERT mRNA in tissues was 47% each. Conclusions: The low specificity of telomerase and hTERT in colonic tissue suggest that these are not candidate markers for CRC arising in UC. Telomerase in colonoscopic luminal washings, however, may be a novel marker for early CRC in UC. (Intestinal Research 2004;2:15-20)

A two-dimensional photonic crystal structure was investigated using a roll-to-roll nanoreplication and physical vapor deposition processes for the inexpensive enhanced fluorescence substrate which is not sensitive to the polarization directions of excitation light source. An 8 inch silicon master having nano dot array with a diameter of 200 nm, a height of 100 nm and a pitch of 400 nm was prepared by KrF laser scanning lithography and reactive ion etching processes. A flexible polymer mold was fabricated by flat type UV replication process and a deposition of 10 nm nickel layer as an anti-adhesion layer. A roll mold was prepared by warping the flexible polymer mold on an aluminum roll base and a roll-to-roll UV replication process was carried out using the roll mold. After the deposition of ~ 100 nm TiO2 layer on the replicated nano dot array, a 2 dimensional photonic crystal structure was realized with a resonance wavelength of 635 nm for both p- and s-polarized light sources.

The authors analyzed retrospectively the 60 patients with ameloblastoma who were treated at Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pusan National University Hospital from MArch, 1990 to December, 1995. The results obtained were as follows: There were 26 males (43.3%) and 34 females (56.7%). The peak age of patients was the third decade (41.7%). The majority of cases occurred in the mandible 93.3%, especially in the angle region (91.1%). Eighteen of 60 patients (30.0%) were associated with an impacted tooth, by impacted 3rd molar teeth (16.6%), molar (10.0%), and premolar and canine (3.4%) in order., Fifteen of 60 patients (25%) were associated with an odontogenic cyst, by dentigenous cyst(13.3%), odontogenic keratocyst(8.4%), and radicular cyst(3.3%) in order. Radiographically, there were 32 unilocular types(54.2%) with average age of 24.9±10.8 years, 14 multilocular types(23.7%) with average age of 35.7±17.7 and 13 mixed types(22.0%) with average age of 41.4±15.8. Histopathologically, there were 42 follicular types(70.0%) with average age of 33.7±15.1 years and 18 plexiform types(30.0%) with average age of 26±14.6. Conservertive treatment was performed in the 33 patients(55.0%) and their average age was 25.2±13.9 years and radical treatment in the 27 patients(45.0%) and their average age was 39.3±41.8. Overall recurrence rate was 10%. A consistent correlation between the age of the patient and the radiographic or histologic type of mandibular ameloblastoma was observed. There was a tendency for ameloblastomas of the follicular type to show a multilocular or mixed appearance and for those of the plexiform type to show a unilocular appearance.
