This study reviewed terahertz technologies of time domain spectroscopy, T-ray imaging, and high rate wireless data transfer. The main topics of the terahertz research area were investigation of materials and package modules for terahertz wave generation and detection, and setup of the terahertz system for time domain spectroscopy(TDS), T-ray imaging and sub-㎔ wireless communication. In addition to Poly-GaAs film as a photoconductive switching antenna material, a table-top scale for the ㎔-TDS/imaging system and terahertz continuous wave(CW) generation systems for sub-㎔ data transfer and narrow band T-ray imaging were designed. Dielectric properties of ferroelectric BSTO(BaxSr1-x TiO₃) films and chalcogenide glass systems were characterized with the ㎔-TDS system at the ㎔ frequency range. Package modules for terahertz wave transmitter/receiver(Tx/Rx) photoconductive antenna were developed.

One of the important applications of ㎔ time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) is the detection of explosive materials through identification of vibrational fingerprint spectra. Most recent ㎔ spectroscopic measurements have been made using pellet samples, where disorder effects contribute to line broadening, which results in the merging of individual resonances into relatively broad absorption features. To address this issue, we used the technique of parallel plate waveguide (PPWG) ㎔-TDS to achieve sensitive characterization of three explosive materials: TNT, RDX, and HMX. The measurement method for PPWG ㎔-TDS used well-established ultrafast optoelectronic techniques to generate and detect sub-picosecond THz pulses. All materials were characterized as powder layers in 112 ㎛ gaps in metal PPWG. To illustrate the PPWG ㎔-TDS method, we described our measurement by comparing the vibrational spectra of the materials, TNT, RDX, and HMX, applied as thin powder layers to a PPWG, or in conventional sample cell form, where all materials were placed in Teflon sample cells. The thin layer mass was estimated to be about 700 ㎍, whereas the mass in the sample cell was ~100 ㎎. In a laboratory environment, the absorption coefficient of an explosive material is essentially based on the mass of the material, which is given as: a(w)=[ln(IR(w)IS(w))]/m. In this paper, we show spectra of 3 different explosives from 0.2 to 2.4 ㎔ measured using the PPWG THz-TDS.
Wideband 4×8 Array Antennas with Aperture Coupled Patch Antenna Elements on LTCC
Mun Cheol Paek,Kwang-Yong Kang,Ik Guen Choi,Han-Cheol Ryu,Dong Suk Jun,Alexander Bondarik,Hong-Yeol Lee 한국전자파학회JEES 2010 Journal of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science Vol.10 No.3
We proposed a 4×8 array antenna with aperture-coupled patch antenna elements. The antenna was designed for 60 GHz operation and fabrication on the low-temperature cofired ceramic(LTCC) substrate(εr=5.8). The feedline with the stub was designed to enhance the radiating element bandwidth and the transition characteristics between the waveguide (WG) and microstrip line(MSL). Through the optimization of the antenna and feedline geometry, the antenna gain and the performance of the 10 ㏈ bandwidth were 20.2 dBi and 13 % up, respectively. The measured results agreed with the simulated ones.

Malondialdehyde Levels in Middle Ear Fluid from Patients of Otitis Media with Effusion
Mun, Kyo Cheol,Kim, Deok Jun 생화학분자생물학회 1997 BMB Reports Vol.32 No.1
Otitis media with effusion (OME) is an inflammatory disease of the middle ear cleft. Oxygen free radicals have been implicated in a variety of inflammatory disorders. Oxygen free radicals may also be involved in the pathogenesis of OME. To evaluate the involvement of oxygen free radicals in the pathogenesis of OME, the level of malondialdehyde, which gives an index of lipid peroxidation by oxygen free radicals, was measured by the reaction with thiobarbituric acid. Malondialdehyde level in the middle ear fluid from the OME group was higher than that in the normal control group. Malon-dialdehyde level in the middle ear fluid from a mucoid subgroup was higher than that in the serous subgroup. Malondialdehyde levels in the middle ear fluid from the serous subgroup was significantly correlated with symptom duration. The Pearson correlation coefficient between malondialdehyde levels in the middle ear fluid from the serous subgroup and symptom duration was 0.842 (P$lt;0.05). These results indicate that lipid peroxidation by oxygen free radicals may be involved in the pathogenesis of human OME.

The phenomena of higher channel cross polarization discrimination (XPD) is mainly observed for future wireless technologies such as small cell network and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Therefore, utilization of high XPD is very important and space-polarization division multiple access (SPDMA) with dual-polarized MIMO system could be a suitable solution to high-speed transmission in high XPD environment as well as reduction of array size at base station (BS). By SPDMA with dual-polarized MIMO system, two parallel data signals can be transmitted by both vertically and horizontally polarized antennas to serve different mobile stations (MSs) simultaneously compare to conventional space division multiple access (SDMA) with single-polarized MIMO system. This paper analyzes the performance of SPDMA for maximum ratio transmission (MRT) in time division duplexing (TDD) system by proposed dual-polarized MIMO spatial channel model (SCM) compare to conventional SDMA. Simulation results indicate that how SPDMA utilizes the high XPD as the number of MS increases and SPDMA performs very close to conventional SDMA for same number of antenna elements but half size of the array at BS.

A 2-year-old female Maltese dog was presented with a history of anemia and vaginal hemorrhagic discharge. Physical examination revealed severe vaginal hemorrhagic discharge, abdominal pain, pale mucous membranes, low blood pressure and dehydration. Results of serum biochemistry, hematology, venous blood gas, and electrolyte canine C-reactive protein (CRP) test revealed severe normocytic normochromic anemia, severe neutropenia, a high level of CRP, hypoglycemia, and imbalanced electrolytes. Abdominal ultrasound examination showed focal hypoechoic defect with loss of layering in uterine horn wall. A laparotomy revealed a clear reddish fluid in the abdomen, the fistula of left and right uterine horn, the purulent discharge from fistula, and symptoms of septic peritonitis near by the fistula site. The bitch underwent ovariohysterectomy and recovered without complication. Histopathological diagnosis of the uterine fistula site was adenocarcinoma.
