Vol.52 No.-

The time-honoured debate on the decline of yeomanry has been afresh raised by bourgeois historians such as J.D.Chambers, G.E.Mingay and D.S.Landes on the one hand and by Marxist historians such as E.P. Thompson and W.Lazonick and local historian W.G.Hoskins on the other. This article aims to clarify the unexhausted problems of the decline of yeomanry by reexamining of many-sided angles of the decline of yeomanry, that is, its declining period, extent and causes as well as legal protection of copyholders and impact of parliamentary enclosure and population growht on the decline of yeomanry in terms of having an insinght into fortunes of peasants in Korea, who are facing with the storm of Urguay Round. The reappraisal will be summarized as follows; The view on the first half of the 18th century among views on the declinning period seems to gain great support from scholars who have made statistical case studies. This writer, however, feels that this view has to be supplemented by further local studies throughout the country. The extent of its decline amounted to abort 50% during the period from the end of the 17th century to 1750s, when the typical yeomanry has lost its significace of a distinct social class as a historical category. And the causes of the decline were various in short and long-term factors; uncertainty of legal protection of copyholders, heavy war taxes, fall of corn prices, enclosures by agreement and by parlinament which Marxists stressed, partible inheritance system and growth of population in the 18th century which bourgeois historians emphasized. Lastly, just as the fortunes of yeomanry had badly depended on the interference of state power, parliamentary enclosure, so the fate of peasants in Korea will depend on the interference of national power, the Urguay Round. Already considerably declining peasant in Korea are liably to trace the same fate as yeomanry in the 18th century England, if they won't be sided by the protection of national policy.

Vol.19 No.2

After the treatment 15 strains of Trichoderma sp. and 4 isolates with N-methyl-N´-nitro-nitrosoguanidine, T. reesei YC-3156 among the mutants showed the highest cellulase activity. The Avicelase of T. reesei YC-3156 was purified by 70% ammonium sulfate fractionation, dialysis, DEAE-Sepharose column chromatography and Sephadex G-100 Gel-filtration. With the result of the procedures, its purification degree was 13 folds, yield 9.3% and specific activity 0.9 unit/mg. The homogeneity and the molecular weights of the purified Avicelase were determined by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, it was electrophoretically homogeneous and showed the molecular weights of 46,000-48,000. The purified Avicelase was stable between pH 4.0 and pH 5.0 and it was inactivated rapidly above 60℃.

      • Tawney

Vol.12 No.-

This thesis is intended as a brief evaluation of Professor Tawney's view on the modern (capitalistic) society. Richard Henry Tawney, as a great historian, thinker and humanist, made epoch-making achievements through his scholastic works. His study of the 16th century made such a great impact that the century is often called Tawney's century". His works were motivated by his serious consciousness of the need to reform conflicts and vice in the modern society through analyzing its essence in the light of history. He attempted to investgate the modern society in terms of relation between economy and religion. His theory was based on the conviction that economic categories of the modern society along with religion have been the most potent force in giving its character. The gist of his theory on modern society can be summarized as follows; ① The modern society after the Glorious Revolution became absolutely irreligious without internal union with religion. ② Religion, which ceased to be the master interest of mankind as a result of triumph of religious indifferentism and economic virtues, has dwindled into a part of an individual life. ③ On the other hand, material riches has become the supreme object of human endevour, and economic expediency is regarded as the final criterion to estimate human interests and activities. ④ The modern society in which economic activities claim the supreme object of all human being interests and activities, resulted in estrangement of humanity and value inversion. Professor Tawney criticized severely that the irreligious and inhuman modern society is one of fetish worship and idol worship of material riches. He laid stress on the role of religion in reforming vicious elements and in reralizing social justice in the modern society.

Nelson Yi Sun-sin and Horatio Nelson

Vol.2 No.-

While Admiral Yi Sun-sin, hero of Im-jin war(1592-98), has been worshipped as a great national hero, the hero-worship might be in danger of degenerating into national parochailism and chauvinism, if it would be connected with darker aspect of nationalism. This writer, therefore, has thought it necessary to make a study of Admiral Yi in world perpective to correct (aufheben) some blind patriotism, egocentrism on the one hand and foreign-oriented mind on the other and to examine his relative greatness and proper position in naval history of the world. This aticle is a comparative study of Admiral Yi with Horatio Nelson, hero of Trafalgar(1805), in dealing with their respective genius and ideas, great achievements (three major naval battles of both) and characters. etc. The following may be stated as a summary of this article; Through this comparisons, simiralities and differences between Admiral Nelson and Yi are observed. Their similarities are found in their staratigies of annihilation, patriotism, and great naval victories at the cost of life, and their differences are in personal character, scholarship and various non-militray activities. The Admirals ennobled the idea of duty, chose the high path of patriotism pursuing it to end, and ensured fo their fatherlands mastery of seas which was unchallenged for more than a century. Both of them left the same legacy of heroism and devotion to their countries that can hardly be excelled. To be sure, Nelson was the greatest of sea heroes in the world history and superman on the quarterdeck. However, he was a man with many of human frailities. In contrast with Nelson, Admiral Yi was not only a fleet commander but also a great scientist, eminent scholar, well-known filial devotionist and virtuous man of character. He was a fleet commander of an effiminate country who had to play many-sided roles in construction ships for himself, manufacturing arms, recruiting seamen, producing provisions and providing assylums for refugees. In consideration of his many-sided genius and roles, this writer believes that Admiral Yi may be no less greater than Nelson whose fame seems to be owed much to Great Britain as a powerful naval empire and egocentric western history. Consequently, he might say that Admiral Yi deserves to be placed in the same position in Asian history as Nelson in western history.

      • 『Yeomanry

Vol.15 No.-

This thesis is an attempt to approach the true nature of modern (capitalistic) society by examining the disappearance of yeomanry. A little work has been done by this writer on the subject of "A Consideration on the Yeomanry-Especially in the Process of Its Growth and Defining Its Concept," and now it remains as an unaccomplished task for him to consider the process of the stratification of yeomanry and its disappearance. Why and when did yeomanry disappear? Two things must be considered before we can answer these questions; the historical characteristics of yeomanry and a survey of the theories of the disappearance of yeomanry by scholars. As the parcelling peasantry (parzellen Bauern) typical yeomanry has dual, transitional and self-destructive characteristics and plays its historical role in the transitional period between the dissolution of feudal land-ownership and the establishment of a modern capitalistic system (from 16th century to 19th century). On the disappearance of yeomanry, different views have been expressed by scholars who differed from one another in their definition of its conception, in the historical sources of evidence analized, and in their opinion of causes. Their opinions of the true period of the disappearance of yeomanry range from ① the first half of the 18th century, ② to the latter half of the 18th century and ③ to the first half of the 19th century after 1815. The first view appears to have wider support of scholars who have made partial, sectional studies about yeomanry by statistical analysis. The following may be stated as a summary of this thesis; With Tudor Enclosure and a great shift in the land-ownership caused by the dissolution of Monasteries and the English Revolution, yeomanry which was already in the beginning process of stratification in the 16th century was further accelerated into dissolution and began to disappear from the society. The stratification of yeomanry, along with Paliamentary Enclosure and the Industrial Revolution, was completed by the time the capitalistic system (tripartite division) was firmly established. However, the exact period of the disappearance of yeomanry can be stated only after precise definition of its conception and further partial, sectional studies expanded on a national scale are made by statistical analyses.

Vol.18 No.2

A bacterium with the highest pullulanase activity was isolated from the soil and identified as Streptobacillus sp. Y-716. The optimum culture condition of Streptobacillus sp. for the production of pullulanase was as follows; 1.2%(w/v)soluble starch, 0.7%(w/v) CH₃COONH₄, 0.05%(w/v) MgSO₄7 H₂O, 0.01%(w/v)FeSO₄7H₂O, at 30℃, for 48 hrs. The pullulanase from the culture broth of Streptobacillus sp. Y-716 was purified about 46 fold by ammonium sulfate precipitation, dialysis. DEAE-cellulose and Sephadex G-200 column chromatography. The purified enzyme was stable between pH 5.0 and pH 7.5. It was inactivated rapidly above 35℃. The Km value and Vmax of the purified enzyme were 0.0137mg/m/ and 0.666μm/min. on pullulan, respectively.

Vol.16 No.1

The amplification and the isolation conditions of pBR322 plasmid DNA were investigated. For the amplification of pBR322 plasmid DNA, cells from logarithmic growth phase were most effective. The optimal conditions for the amplification of pBR322 plasmid DNA in Escherichia coli GM4 were obtained as follows; 50-150 ㎍/ml of chloramphenicol concentration, 6-8 hours of incubation time in the presence of chloramphenicol. Ampicillin and tetracycline had no effect on the amplification of pBR322 plasmid DNA. Approximately 1 mg of pBR322 plasmid DNA was purified from 3.5 ℓof Escherichia coli GM4 culture broth by hydroxyapatite chromatography. The purified pBR322 plasmid DNA was expressed in Escherichia coli C600.

      • YEOMANRY考 : Especially in Process of Its Growth and Defining Its Concept 特히 그 成立過程 및 槪念規定을 中心으로

Vol.2 No.-

It is all but impossible for us to explain in a few words the substance of the vast mechanism of modern (capitalistic) society, due to the complexity and variety of phases interwoven within it. Though we attempt not to seek a unique law in the progress of history, can't we, however, discover the existence of "primummobile" from which the complex historical phenomena are derived, if we are going to study from a certain historical viewpoint? And can't we, by doing so, arrive with relative ease at the core of the problem? If so, in what may we find its motivating factors? This approach, I believe, is the most important method to understand the law of progress of history. This thesis, a thrift attempt in this attitude, is intended to clarify the concrete image, concept and characteristics of the yeomanry by historical research. The period given in this thesis is the transitory between the dissolution of feudal land-ownership and the ensuing modern society on the heels. Therefore we must focus our attention on the 15th century(1381-1489), that marks an epochal point in England's social and economic changes. As we know since yeomanry is the spontaneous offspring of the dissolution of feudalland-ownership, its ideal type will not be clearly appreciated without basic knowledge of the characteristics and its dissolving phases of feudal land-ownership. The The characteristics of feudal landownership came to its inevitable dissolution when the labor rents shifted into commutation. In process of commutation the favorable situations of villein emancipated themselves from the compulsory system and rents of feudalism and converted themselves in various ways into more stable land-owners, that is, customary tenants, copyholders and leascholders. Yeomanry was constituted of mainly customary tenants, copyholders as well as the original freeholders of yearly revenue of more than 40 shillings. The typical yeomanry as historical category is to be defined as independent self-sustaining small land holder (unabhangiger selbst-wirtschaftender Bauer) who cultivated his own land with his own labor and practiced his initiative on the agricultural management, and who managed the main production of grains supplemented by secondary grazing on the greater portions of open fields in line of common routine of cultivation. Now as a conclusion several facts can be pointed as following; The spontaneous offspring of the yeomary on a vast scale shows us manifestly and focussingly the characteristics of the dissolving process of England's feudalism and the initiating point of the desirable future of capitalistic developments in England. It may be sure the presence of the yeomanry is also, as in many other case in history we can often find, an example of the law of contradictions contained in history. That is, yeomanry took on transitory and dual characteristics, causing the dissolution of feudalism thus paying the way for latter-day English modern (capitalistic) society.
