      • Performance of woodchip biofilters to treat piggery stormwater

        Biofilters are widely used for treating various types of wastewater and also recently in controlling non-point source (NPS) pollution including piggery stormwater. Gravels are common substrates employed in this type of biofilters. In this study, three parallel woodchip based biofilters with different thickness of woodchip layer were constructed and operated for about 300 days in 2013. Sampling was conducted every 2 days. The water temperature, pH, electric conductivity (EC), turbidity and DO were measured in situ. Other water quality parameters were analyzed in accordance with the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater (APHA et al. 1995). On one hand, with less woodchip media packed in the biofilter, better removal of TN, TP, NH4-N, TCOD was achieved. On the other hand, almost all NO3-N were removed regardless of the thickness of woodchip. In addition, with deeper thickness of woodchip media in the biofilter, more increased alkalinity and released organic matters were observed at the effluent. Alkalinity is important in biological nitrogen processes, especially in the reactions of ammonia transformation into nitrate (nitrification). Organic matters released from woodchip served as the carbon source to derive denitrification. It seems that only small amount of the woodchip were sufficient to achieve nice removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Therefore, the amount of the woodchip could be a key in designing a woodchip biofilter.

        Characteristics of Reactively Sputtered Niobium Nitride Thin Films as Diffusion Barriers for Cu Metallization

        NbN films were prepared by radio frequency reactive magnetron sputtering and then employed as diffusion barriers between Cu and Si. The microstructure of the NbN films was an assembly of very small columnar crystallites with a cubic structure. To investigate the properties as diffusion barriers, we performed metallurgical reactions of Cu/NbN0.8/Si, Cu/Nb/Si and Cu/TaN0.7/Si for comparisons. The sheet resistance increased dramatically after annealing above 750°C for Cu/NbN0.80/Si, and above 500°C for both Cu/Nb/Si and Cu/TaN0.7/Si. The interfaces were deteriorated seriously and formation of Cu3Si was observed when the sheet resistance was significantly increased. The diffusion coefficient of Cu in NbN barrier films was estimated by using the change of resistance (ΔRs/Rs %). Compared with TaN0.7, NbN0.8 films possess larger grain size and lower Cu diffusion coefficient. Our results suggest that the NbN film can be used as a diffusion barrier for Cu metallization as compared to the well-known TaN film.

        Investigation of Proteomic Responses of Streptomyces lydicus to Pitching Ratios for Improving Streptolydigin Production

        Streptomyces lydicus has been reported to produce antibiotic streptolydigin. Pitching ratios play crucial roles in primary and secondary metabolism of Streptomyces bacteria. The higher pitching ratio (30%, v/v)significantly enhanced the levels of streptolydigin products in S. lydicus. Proteome analysis revealed that betaglucosidase and UTP-glucose-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase were up-regulated to accelerate the starch hydrolyzation at the high pitching ratios. Enhancement in the levels of UDPN-acetylmuramoylalanyl-D-glutamate-2, 6-diaminopimelate ligase and glycine cleavage system aminomethyltransferase were involved in the conversion of amino acids into secondary metabolites. Additionally, the expression levels of PfkA2, PfkA3, Zwf2, SucD, GalE1, GatB, TktA1 and ThcA, associated with glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway, TCA cycle and amino acid metabolism, were dramatically elevated at high pitching ratios, which play important roles in the enhanced streptolydigin production in S. lydicus E9. Interestingly, the levels of proteins (glutamine synthetase I, glutamate synthase subunit beta and glutamine synthetase) were down-regulated with the increases of pitching ratios and fermentation progress,revealing that pitching ratio altered the glutamine synthetase levels and consequently regulated the streptolydigin production of S. lydicus E9. The up-regulation of proteins (eg, aldehyde dehydrogenase and alkyl hydroperoxide reductase) was involved in the redox-based regulation network triggered by an imbalance of the intracellular cell redox homeostasis and by crosstalk with secondary metabolism at the higher pitching ratio. These results settle new insights into physiological facts of S. lydicus E9 in responses to pitching ratios and will eventually improve the antibiotic production schemes in industry.

        DEMO: Deep MR Parametric Mapping with Unsupervised Multi-Tasking Framework

        Compressed sensing (CS) has been investigated in magnetic resonance (MR) parametric mapping to reduce scan time. However, the relatively long reconstruction time restricts its widespread applications in the clinic. Recently, deep learningbased methods have shown great potential in accelerating reconstruction time and improving imaging quality in fast MR imaging, although their adaptation to parametric mapping is still in an early stage. In this paper, we proposed a novel deep learningbased framework DEMO for fast and robust MR parametric mapping. Different from current deep learning-based methods, DEMO trains the network in an unsupervised way, which is more practical given that it is difficult to acquire large fully sampled training data of parametric-weighted images. Specifically, a CS-based loss function is used in DEMO to avoid the necessity of using fully sampled k-space data as the label, thus making it an unsupervised learning approach. DEMO reconstructs parametric weighted images and generates a parametric map simultaneously by unrolling an interaction approach in conventional fast MR parametric mapping, which enables multi-tasking learning. Experimental results showed promising performance of the proposed DEMO framework in quantitative MR T1ρ mapping.

        Nitrogen Removal in Column Wetlands Packed with Synthetic Fiber Treating Piggery Stormwater

        본 연구에서는 습지에 널리 적용되는 혼합토양이나 자갈여재 대신 공극율이 90% 이상으로 매우 커서 공극폐색의 염려가 적은 합성섬유를 대체여재로 적용한 수직 흐름형 컬럼습지를 제작하여 서로 다른 수리학적 체류시간, 내부순환빈도 및 오염 부하량 조건에서 축산지역 인공 강우유출수 처리시험을 수행하였다. 모든 습지에서 TSS 제거효율은94~96%, COD 68~73%, TN 35~58% 이었다. 체류시간 등의 운전인자가 TSS와 COD 제거에 미치는 영향은 미미하였다. 그러나 질소의 경우 부하량과 체류시간, 내부순환빈도가 증가할수록 효율이 증가하였다. 특히 운전기간 동안 합성섬유의 생물학적 분해작용으로 인하여 유기물질이 다량 용출되었으며 탈질을 위한 내부공급 탄소원으로 기여하는것으로 밝혀졌다. 그러나 용출기간은 40일 정도 지속되었으므로 그 효과는 매우 제한적이었다. 습지 내부충진 여재로서 합성섬유가 갖는 장점은 가벼우므로 구조체의 시공에 소요되는 비용을 저감할 수 있고, 비표면적이 크고 습지수명을 연장할 수 있다는 점이다. A set of lab-scale polymer synthetic fiber packed column wetlands composing three columns (CW1, CW2 and CW3) with different hydraulic regimes, recirculation frequencies and pollutant loading rates, were operated in 2012. Synthetic fiber tested as an alternative wetland medium for soil mixture or gravel which has been widely used, has very high pore size and volume, so that clogging opportunity can be greatly avoided. The inflow to the wetland was artificial stormwater. All the wetlands achieved effective removal of TSS (94%~96%), TCOD (68%~73%), TN (35%~58%), TKN (62%~73%) and NH4-N (85%~ 99%). Particularly, it was observed that COD was released from the fiber during one distinct period in all wetlands. This was probably due to the degradation of polymer fiber, and the released organic matters were found to serve as carbon source for denitrification. In addition, with longer retention time and frequent recirculation, lower effluent concentration was observed. With higher pollutant loading rate, higher nitrification and denitrification rates were achieved. However, although organic matters were released from the fiber, the lack of carbon source was still the limiting factor for the system since the release persisted only for 40 days.

        Influence of FeSe doping on superconducting properties of MgB2 by hybrid microwave method

        The effect of FeSe doping on the physical properties of MgB2 is studied. Bulk samples of the FeSe doped MgB2 with weight ratio x ðFeSe : MgB2Þ ¼ 0%; 3%; 7% and 10% were prepared by hybrid microwave method. It is proved that FeSe is not stable together with MgB2. Fe2þ enters into MgB2 lattice, some Mg2þ and Se2『 are combined into the new impurity compound MgSe. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) slightly decreased with increasing doping content of FeSe from R-T and M-T curves, which results from the substitution of Mg2þ by Fe2þ in the MgB2 lattice. The Jc increase slightly with the FeSe doping content increasing from 3 wt % to 10 wt %, which results from the increasing MgSe impurity pinning centers.

        Probabilistic determination of initial cable forces of cable-stayed bridges under dead loads

        This paper presents an improved Monte Carlo simulation for the probabilistic determination of initial cable forces of cable-stayed bridges under dead loads using the response surfaces method. A response surface (i.e. a quadratic response surface without cross-terms) is used to approximate structural response. The use of the response surface eliminates the need to perform a deterministic analysis in each simulation loop. In addition, use of the response surface requires fewer simulation loops than conventional Monte Carlo simulation. Thereby, the computation time is saved significantly. The statistics (e.g. mean value, standard deviation) of the structural response are calculated through conventional Monte Carlo simulation method. By using Monte Carlo simulation, it is possible to use the existing deterministic finite element code without modifying it. Probabilistic analysis of a truss demonstrates the proposed method' efficiency and accuracy; probabilistic determination of initial cable forces of a cable-stayed bridge under dead loads verifies the method's applicability.

      • Up-regulation of Thy-1 Promotes Invasion and Metastasis of Hepatocarcinomas

        Increasing evidence has revealed that thy-1 was a potential stem cell marker of liver cancer, but no data have been shown on how thy-1 regulates the pathophysiology of liver cancer, such as proliferation, apoptosis, invasion and migration. We previously demonstrated that thy-1 was expressed in about 1% of hepg2 cells, thy-1+hepg2 cells, but not thy-1-, demonstrating high tumorigenesis on inoculation $0.5{\times}10^5$ cells per BACA/LA mouse after 2 months. In the present study, our results showed that higher expression of thy-1 occurs in 72% (36/50 cases) of neoplastic hepatic tissues as compared to 40% (20/50 cases) of control tissues, and the expression of thy-1 is higher in poorly differentiated liver tumors than in the well-differentiated ones. In addition, thy-1 expression was detected in 85% of blood samples from liver cancer patients, but none in normal subjects or patients with cirrhosis or hepatitis. There was a significant negative correlation between thy-1expression and E-cadherin expression (a marker of invasion and migraton), but not between thy-1 expression and AFP expression in all the liver cancer and blood samples. We further investigated the relationship between thy-1 and E-cadherin in liver cancer hepg2 cell line which was transfected with pReceiver-M29/thy-1 eukaryotic expression vector followed by aspirin treatment. Lower expression of E-cadherin but higher expressions of thy-1 were detected in hepg2 cells transfected with pReceiver-M29/thy-1. Taken together, our study suggested that thy-1 probably regulates liver cancer invasion and migration.

        Mangiferin ameliorates cardiac fibrosis in D-galactose-induced aging rats by inhibiting TGF-β/p38/MK2 signaling pathway

        Aging is the process spontaneously occurred in living organisms. Cardiac fibrosis is a pathophysiological process of cardiac aging. Mangiferin is a well-known C-glucoside xanthone in mango leaves with lots of beneficial properties. In this study, rat model of cardiac fibrosis was induced by injected with 150 mg/kg/d D-galactose for 8 weeks. The age-related cardiac decline was estimated by detecting the relative weight of heart, the serum levels of cardiac injury indicators and the expression of hypertrophic biomakers. Cardiac oxidative stress and local inflammation were measured by detecting the levels of malondialdehyde, enzymatic antioxidant status and proinflammatory cytokines. Cardiac fibrosis was evaluated by observing collagen deposition via masson and sirius red staining, as well as by examining the expression of extracellular matrix proteins via Western blot analysis. The cardiac activity of profibrotic TGF-β1/p38/MK2 signaling pathway was assessed by measuring the expression of TGF-β1 and the phosphorylation levels of p38 and MK2. It was observed that mangiferin ameliorated D-galactose-induced cardiac aging, attenuated cardiac oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis, as well as inhibited the activation of TGF-β1/p38/MK2 signaling pathway. These results showed that mangiferin could ameliorate cardiac fibrosis in D-galactose-induced aging rats possibly via inhibiting TGF-β/p38/MK2 signaling pathway.
