        Lyriform vibration receptors in the web‐building spider, Nephila clavata (Araneidae: Araneae: Arachnida)

        Vibration receptors appear to be more necessary for web‐building spiders, but most knowledge of arachnid lyriform organs comes from the study of wandering spiders affected by ground vibrations. Here, we examined the fine structural aspects of the lyriform organs in the web‐building spider Nephila clavata using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) to fill the gap. The lyriform organ is found in all appendages, including the femur, patella, tibia, and metatarsal segments. A number of slit receptors of various sizes are distributed in the parallel orientation of the cuticle along the long axis. According to its fine structural characteristics, all lyriform organs of this spider are classified as a compound type with multiple cuticular slits. However, the number of cuticular slits per each lyriform organ varies considerably from a minimum of three to a maximum of 17. A total 35 pairs of lyriform organs were counted from an adult female spider. Except for small numerical variation in the 4th appendage, the distribution is remarkably constant within each appendage. Comparing the total number of cuticular slits per each appendage, the 3rd appendage has the highest number (85), but the 4th appendage shows the least number (63). Based on the total number of cuticular slits per leg segment, the patella segment seems to be the most sensitive to vibration reception in this orb‐web spider.

        cDNA array 방법을 이용한 망간에 노출된 흰쥐 뇌기저핵의 유전자발현 분석

        Objectives: This study investigated the gene expression profile in basal ganglia of manganese-exposed rats based on cDNA array analysis. Methods: For cDNA array, 25 male Sprague-Dawley rats (250±25 g) were intraperitoneally injected with 25 ㎎/㎏ B. W./day of MnCl2 (0.3 ㎖) for 10 days. For dose-related gene expression analysis, rats were intraperitoneally injected with 0.2, 1.0, and 5.0 ㎎/㎏ B. W/day of MnCl2 for 10 days. Control rats were injected with an equal volume of saline. RNA samples were extracted from brain tissue and reverse-transcribed in the presence of [α^(32)P]-dATP. Membrane sets of the Atlas Rat 1.2 array Ⅱ and Toxicology array 1.2 kit (Clontech, Palo Alto, CA) were hybridized with cDNA probe sets. Northern blot hybridization method was employed to assess the dose-related gene expression. Results: Fifty-two genes showed significant changes in expression of more than two-fold. Twenty-eight were up-regulated and 24 were down-regulated in the manganese-exposed group compared to the control. Among the 52 genes, 28 genes including nuclear factor I-X1 (NF1-X1), neuroligin 2 and 3, mitochondrial stress-70 protein (MTHSP70), neurodegeneration-associated protein 1 (Neurodap 1), multidrug resistance protein (MDR), and endoplasmic reticulum stress protein 72 (ERP72), were reported for the first time related to the manganese-induced neurotoxic-metabolism in the rat basal ganglia. According to the dose-related gene expression analyses, MTHSP70, Neurodap 1 and ERP72 genes were up-regulated compared to the control even in the group exposed to low manganese dose ( 0.2 ㎎/㎏ B.W./day). Conclusions: Twenty-eight genes detected for the first time in this study were closely related to the manganese-induced neurotoxic-metabolism in the rat basal ganglia and further study of these genes can give some more useful information about the manganese metabolism.

      • 수중음파진행의 수치모형실험

        유한차분법을 사용하여 3층 구조에서의 수중음파진행을 수치모형 실험을 통하여 재현시켜 보았다. 여기서 상부층은 해수층이며, 중간층은 퇴적층, 하부층은 반무한공간을 차지하는 기반암층을 나타낸다. 모델을 극소화하여 계산의 효과를 높였으며, 이를 위하여 Reynolds??가 개발한 투영경계조건을 사용하였다. 수치모형실험의 결과는 음파를 발생하여 일정시간이 경과한 후의 매질의 변위와, 자유표면상에 놓여있는 수진기배열이 감지하는 음파의 진폭을 시간의 함수로 표시하였다. 본 실험결과를 통하여 음파의 반사 및 굴절특성 뿐만 아니라, 음파의 복반사 및 자유표면에서의 반사특성까지 분석이 가능하게 되었다.

        When four boreholes are installed in the cast-in-place pile, coordinates of the boreholes are obtained by using a least squares method, utilizing six hole-to-hole distance measurements. In addition, most probable values of hole-to-hole distances are calculated with coordinates of the boreholes. With the knowledge of borehole coordinates sound velocity of the pile can be obtained more accurately, and the cross section of the pile can be drawn with the drawing program easily. Also, coordinates of the boreholes would be very useful when a horizontal tomography technique is applied for integrity test of the cast-in-place pile.

        The autoimmune nature of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura(ITP) and Graves' disease has been well established. In both disease, circulating immunoglobulins are believed to be involved in the pathogenesis and transplacental transfer of both disease is the ultimate proof of the importance of the humoral mechanism involved. Because of the tendency of autoimmune disease to cluster in the same individual or members of the same family, simultaneous incidence of ITP and Graves' disease is to be expected. However, in clinical practice, it has been described only rare. Therefore, we report here the case of a patient suffering sequentially from ITP and Geaves' disease with the literature.

        자궁내막암 수술시 임파절 전이의 예측인자로서 CA 125의 임상적 유용성

        목적 : 자궁내막암 환자에 있어서 골반 임파절 전이의 예측인자로 수술 전 CA 125 값의 유용성을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 방법 : 1992년 10월부터 2002년 10월까지 가톨릭대학교 의과대학 강남성모병원에서 자궁내막암 진단하에 수술받은 환자 100명을 대상으로 의무기록을 토대로 수술전 CA 125와 임파절 전이유무의 관계를 살펴보았다. 통계적 방법으로는 만-휘트니 유 테스트와 카이 제곱 피셔 테스트를 사용하였다. 결과 : 수술 전 CA 125 값은 병기가 증가함에 따라, 자궁근층을 1/2 이상 침범한 경우, 자궁경부나 부속기를 침범한 경우, 골반 임파절 전이가 있는 경우 유의하게 높게 측정되었다(p<0.05). 결론 : 수술 전 CA 125의 증가는 자궁내막암의 골반 임파절 전이를 예측하는데 있어 유용하다고 할 수 있다. Objective : The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of preoperative CA 125 levels in determining the need for lymphadenectomy in patients with endometrial carcinoma. Methods : CA 125 levels were measured in 100 patients diagnosed with endometrial carcinoma who underwent surgery at Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital between October 1992 and October 2002. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-whitney U test and x-Fisher's exact test. Results : Univariate analyses showed that elevated CA 125 levels were significantly correlated with an advanced stage, increasing depth of myometrial invasion, cervical invasion, adnexal involvement, high grade hystology and lymph node metastases (p<0.05). Conclusion : Our data provide an evidence that the elevation of preoperative CA 125 levels can be considered as a predictor for full pelvic lymphadenectomy in the surgical staging of endometrial cancer.

      • 2000-2001년에 임상 검체로부터 분리된 주요 세균의 향균제 내성

        In choosing the appropriate antimicrobial agent for a given bacteria infection, the identity of the infecting organism and the information about the antimicrobial susceptibility of that must be considered. We analyzed antimicrobial resistance of the bacteria isolated from clinical specimens at Soonchunhyang chunan hospital in 2000 and 2001. Most of gram negative rods showed resistance for ampicillin and resistant rates of Enterobacteriaceae for 3rd generation cephalosporin were significant. Fluoroquinolone resistance rate was 75.9% in Acinetobacter baumannii. The ceftazidime, fluoroquinolone and imipenem resistant Staphylococcus aureus and penicillin resistance Streptococcus pneumoniae are prevalent. No Staphylococcus showed resistance for vancomycin was detected. Vancomycin resistant rate in enterococci was insignificant. To prevent the emergency of new resistance for antimicrobial agent and spreading of multidrug resistant bacteria, we believe that policy and action for prevention to hospital infection and appropriate use of antimicrobial agent are necessary.

      • 2003년 임상검체로부터 분리된 Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase 생성 Escherichia coli와 Klebsiella pneumoniae의 조사

        Background : Extended-spectrum β-lactamases(ESBLs) in gram negative organisms confer resistance to β-lactam drugs such as cefotaxime, ceftazidime and aztreonam. In recent years there has been an increased incidence and prevalence of ESBLs. Thus the purpose of this study was to survey E. coli and K. pneumoniae in order to determine the prevalence of ESBLs. Methods : 637 isolates E. coli of and 328 isolate of K. pneumoniae were collected in Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital during January and December 2003. Isolates investigated for production of ESBLs and susceptible rates for antimicrobial agent by NCCLS methods. Result : ESBL producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae strains were 101 (15.9%) and 43 (13.1%) isolates. The common sources of ESBL producer were lower respiratory specimens and urine. ESBL-producers are more prevalent among isolates in ICU. ESBL producing isolates were lesser susceptible for gentamicin and ciprofloxacin. Conclusion : ESBLs producing E. coli and K. pneumoniae isolates were prevalent in hospital. ESBL-producer were isolated more frequently from lower respiratory specimens and urine, and were lesser susceptible for non-β-lactam drug. Increased incidence and prevalence of strains expressing ESBLs present therapeutic challenges.

        This study is to investigate a fracture characteristics of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) under the tensile loading as a function of acoustic emission (AE) according to the frequency analysis (transient mode) and AE source location (location mode). It was found that the fracture mechanism of AE frequency analysis was a useful tool for the estimation of different type of fracture in CFRP, i.e., matrix(epoxy resin) cracking, delamination and fiber breakage same as AE amplitude distribution.
