        Vitamin D and narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy for chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus

        Background: In addition to improving the serum vitamin D balance, narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy can effectively treat chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP). We investigated the degree of CKD-aP amelioration according to changes in the serum vitamin D level after NB-UVB phototherapy. Methods: This was a before-after clinical study in patients with refractory CKD-aP on hemodialysis. NB-UVB phototherapy was administered thrice weekly for 12 weeks. The response of CKD-aP to NB-UVB phototherapy was assessed as the change in pruritus intensity over time. A rapid response was defined as a reduction in the visual analog scale (VAS) score of ≥50% within the first 6 weeks of NB-UVB phototherapy. Results: We included 34 patients in this study. Although serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations increased significantly, by a median of 17.4 ng/mL, after the phototherapy course, other serologic parameters did not change. NB-UVB phototherapy reduced the VAS score for pruritus intensity over time significantly more in patients with Δ25(OH)D of >17.4 ng/mL than in patients with Δ25(OH)D of ≤17.4 ng/mL (p = 0.001). Ten patients were rapid responders. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that Δ25(OH)D was independently associated with rapid response (odds ratio, 1.29; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-1.63; p = 0.04). Conclusion: The effect of NB-UVB phototherapy on patients with CKD-aP correlated with their increase in serum vitamin D levels. Further well-designed clinical and experimental studies are needed to clarify the relationship between NB-UVB phototherapy and serum vitamin D levels in patients with CKD-aP.

      • Comparison of Differences in Rice Quality Characteristics According to Cultivation Regions

        Korea’s agricultural technology has made remarkable progress since the Green Revolution in the 1970s. On the other hand, North Korea is still in short supply of food, and needs a stable food supply. Therefore, it is necessary to secure basic data for selecting North Korean-adaptable varieties in order to introduce South Korean varieties to North Korea when support for North Korea is needed in the future. In this study, 27 rice varieties applicable to North Korea were grown in Cheolwon (CW) and Ganghwa (GH) with similar climates to North Korea, and the quality factors of rice were compared. They showed that the rice grown in GH had higher protein and lower amylose contents than the rice grown in CW. Moreover, in the case of normal rice grown in CW, the ratio of head rice was 12% higher and the ratio of broken rice was 57% lower than that of rice grown in GH. The differences in rice composition and appearance quality of rice according to the cultivation region seems to be due to the fact that the length of day and temperature. The results of this study are expected to be useful in selecting and using rice varieties suitable for North Korea in the future.

        《한데 모으기》는 일상 생활의 모든 곳에서 작용하여 작곡의 소재를 포착해내는 휴대용 컴퓨터 프로젝트이며, 이 소재들을 청각화, 시각화하는 공연을 통해 과거를 다시 맥락화하게 된다. 사람들은 일상의 순간에 휴대폰을 이용해 소리를 녹음하거나, 사진을 찍거나. 문자를 입력하여 작곡에 참여하게 된다. 이러한 시간과 장소가 인식된 스냅샷들이 모여서 《한데 모으기》가 공연되는 동안 현재의 시간과 장로로 수렴된다. 휴대용 컴퓨터 행위는 우리가 가는 곳 어디나 항상 동행함으로써 개인적이고 영향력 있는 음악적 경험을 만들어 내는, 이 작품의 중요한 역할을 담당한다. 이 글은 물리적, 정서적으로 편재하는 컴퓨터 행위에 의해 실현되는 유일한 작곡 모델로서의 《한데 모으기》에 대한 중요한 의의, 기술적 문제, 공연 문맥에 대한 자세한 기술도 포함하고 있다. Converge is a project that leverage ubiquity of mobile computing to capture compositional materials from our daily lives, which become recontextualized during a performance through a sonification and visualization of the past. Participants in the composition record sounds, take pictures, and submit text descriptions using mobile phones to capture their life moments. During the performance of Converge, these timestamped and location-tagged snapshots are brought together, converging to the present time and place. By accompanying us at all times wherever we go mobile computing serves a critical role in this composition, generating a musical experience that is personal and powerful. This paper details the overarching motivation, technical implementation, and performance context of Converge, viewed as a unique example of a composition realized by a new model of computing that is pervasive, both in the physical and affective sense.

        Performance Comparison of Multi-level Coding Schemes for NAND Flash Memory

        Emerging three-dimensional (3D) NAND flash memory devices support new input/output (I/O) modes in which devices can program/read multiple pages sharing a common word line at the same operating time. The new I/O modes enable error-control systems to apply non-binary coding techniques, which are known to achieve capacity-approaching performance in a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime in conjunction with high-order modulations for NAND storage devices. This paper compares the performance of a number of multi-level-coding/multistage-decoding (MLC/MSD) schemes for NAND flash memory applications. By applying MLC/MSD techniques, it is possible to minimize the code rate loss caused by using the same code designed for the bit level of a page with the highest error rate equal to the remaining bit level of the pages. One considered scheme is an MLC/MSD method applied to 1D and 2D constellations with Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) component codes. Another scheme compared is a special trellis-coded modulation (TCM) method with extra-strong error correction applied to subset labeling bits via Reed-Solomon (RS) code concatenation. In this paper, a new performance analysis method based on semi-analytical block-multinomial modeling is proposed to provide a simpler way to handle correlated error in TCM output. The analytical error rate results and semi-analytical error rate results based on the block multinomial model with the TCM scheme all indicate significant performance advantages from MLC/MSD schemes relative to the baseline BCH coding method.

      • Directionally Antagonistic Graphene Oxide-Polyurethane Hybrid Aerogel as a Sound Absorber

        <P>Innovative sound absorbers, the design of which is based on carbon nanotubes and graphene derivatives, could be used to make more efficient sound absorbing materials because of their excellent intrinsic mechanical and chemical properties. However, controlling the directional alignments of low-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, such as restacking, alignment, and dispersion, has been a challenging problem when developing sound absorbing forms. Herein, we present the directionally antagonistic graphene oxide-polyurethane hybrid aerogel we developed as a sound absorber, the physical properties of which differ according to the alignment of the microscopic graphene oxide sheets. This porous graphene sound absorber has a microporous hierarchical cellular structure with adjustable stiffness and improved sound absorption performance, thereby overcoming the restrictions of both geometric and function-orientated functions. Furthermore, by controlling the inner cell size and aligned structure of graphene oxide layers in this study, we achieved remarkable improvement of the sound absorption performance at low frequency. This improvement is attributed to multiple scattering of incident and reflection waves on the aligned porous surfaces, and air-viscous resistance damping inside interconnected structures between the urethane foam and the graphene oxide network. Two anisotropic sound absorbers based on the directionally antagonistic graphene oxide-polyurethane hybrid aerogels were fabricated. They show remarkable differences owing to the opposite alignment of graphene oxide layers inside the polyurethane foam and are expected to be appropriate for the engineering design of sound absorbers in consideration of the wave direction.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        RS-LDPC Concatenated Coding for the Modern Tape Storage Channel

        <P>In modern tape storage, user data are recorded and retrieved along multiple tracks of rapidly moving, flexible magnetic medium that give rise to a variety of channel impediments including occasional long erasures, more frequent amplitude fades as well as a large amount of random errors. This work considers reliable recovery of data from such tape channels using a novel concatenation of an inner Reed-Solomon (RS) code and an outer nonbinary low-density parity-check (LDPC) code. This particular concatenation scheme and a highly tailored iterative decoding algorithm are chosen to efficiently handle the assortment of the tape channel impediments while meeting the stringent target error rate constraint as well as key practical requirements of the mass tape storage system. Despite the use of a nonbinary LDPC code, the proposed scheme allows excellent performance-complexity tradeoffs. In stark contrast to any existing coding schemes that involve LDPC codes, the proposed concatenation strategy allows semianalytic error rate performance evaluation at rates below what is possible using modern computers, thus providing an ability to ensure satisfactory low-error-rate performance.</P>

        The Role of Adiponectin in the Skin

        Adiponectin (Ad), a 30 kDa molecule, is an anti-diabetic adipokine; although derived from adipose tissue, it performs numerous activities in various other tissues. It binds to its own receptors, namely adiponectin receptor 1(AdipoR1), adiponectin receptor 2 (AdipoR2), and T-cadherin (CDH13). Ad plays several roles, especially as a regulator. It modulates lipid and glucose metabolism and promotes insulin sensitivity. This demonstrates that Ad has a robust correlation with fat metabolism. Furthermore, although Ad is not in direct contact with other tissues, including the skin, it can be delivered to them by diffusion or secretion via the endocrine system. Recently it has been reported that Ad can impact skin cell biology, underscoring its potential as a therapeutic biomarker of skin diseases. In the present review, we have discussed the association between skin cell biology and Ad. To elaborate further, we described the involvement of Ad in the biology of various types of cells in the skin, such as keratinocytes, fibroblasts, melanocytes, and immune cells. Additionally, we postulated that Ad could be employed as a therapeutic target to maintain skin homeostasis.

        A Two-Bit Weighted Bit-Flipping Decoding Algorithm for LDPC Codes

        <P>This letter proposes a novel two-bit weighted bit-flipping algorithm (TB-WBFA) for low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes on the binary symmetric channel. The proposed TB-WBFA produces reliability bits for the bit-decision results and syndrome values at bit and check nodes, respectively. The reliability bits are exchanged between bit and check nodes as the decoding proceeds. The message update in check nodes is carefully devised with simple bitwise operations, which are especially suitable for high-speed operations. It will be demonstrated that the proposed TB-WBFA achieves a significant performance improvement over existing bit-flipping decoding algorithms by conducting performance comparisons for LDPC codes under various setups, i.e., different rates, lengths, and structures.</P>

        팥의 가속화 저장에 따른 미세구조 및 수분흡수 특성

        팥 종실은 평형수분함량에 도달하는데 30시간 내외의 긴시간이 소요되어 팥 이용 측면에서 주요 제한 인자로 작용한다. 따라서 수분흡수 특성 연구는 팥의 이용성 증진을 위한 중요한 분야이다. 본 연구는 국내산 팥의 가속화 저장에따른 미세구조 및 수분흡수 특성을 분석하여 수침 시간 단축을 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 수행되었다. 팥의 저장은 대조구(control)인 저온(4°C), 상온(25°C) 및 가속화 고온(45°C)의 세 조건에서 3개월 동안 수행하였다. 1. 발아율, 지방산가, 적색도(a*) 및 황색도(b*) 값은 저장전 대비 3개월 후, 대조구(control)인 저온(4°C) 저장 팥은 차이를 나타내지 않았으나, 가속화 고온(45°C)에서는통계적인 유의차를 보였다. 특히 가속화 고온(45°C) 조건에서 3개월 동안 저장한 팥은 발아율이 0%까지 감소하고, 지방산가는 초기 10.43 mg KOH/100 g에서 33.63 mg KOH/100 g까지 증가하는 등 품질 저하가 유의적으로 일어났다. 2. 저장 3개월 후, 종실의 배꼽, 종피, 자엽의 미세구조를전자현미경으로 관찰한 결과, 가속화 고온(45°C) 조건에서만 배꼽의 구멍과 찢어진 틈 등의 손상이 있었고, 종피와 자엽 사이의 틈이 벌어지는 변화가 있었으나 자엽자체의 변화는 관찰되지 않았다. 3. 저장 온도별 3개월 저장 시료를 대상으로 수분흡수 kinetic 을 분석한 결과, 대조구(control)인 저온 조건(4°C) 대비가속화 고온(45°C)에서는 팥 종실의 평형수분함량은 낮았으나, 평형수분함량의 50%에 도달하는 시간은 짧고, 수분흡수 속도는 빨랐다. 4. 팥의 수분흡수 특성은 종실의 미세구조 특성과 밀접한관계가 있는 것으로 해석되며, 가속화 고온(45°C) 조건의 저장 팥에서 관찰되는 배꼽의 구멍 및 손상, 종피와자엽 사이의 틈 등 미세구조의 변화가 수분흡수 시간과속도를 단축시킨 것으로 생각된다. 다만, 미세구조의 변화와 평형수분함량과의 관계는 명확한 설명이 되지 않아 이와 관련된 추가 연구가 필요할 것으로 고찰되었다. This study investigated the microstructure and water absorption characteristics of the Korean adzuki bean (Vigna angularis L.) cultivar under accelerated storage. The germination rate, acid value, redness (a*), and yellowness (b*) values showed no significant differences after three months of storage compared to pre-storage under low temperatures (4°C). However, a statistically significant difference was observed under accelerated high temperatures (45°C). In particular, after storage for three months, the germination rate and acid value were 0% and 33.63 mg KOH/100g, respectively, under accelerated high temperatures. After storage for three months, the holes, hilum damage, and spaces between the seed coat and cotyledon shortened the time and speed of water absorption under accelerated high temperatures compared to that under low temperatures. Conversely, further research is required to investigate the reason for the low rate of parallel water absorption.
