        This study was conducted in order to explore general flora of the Gyounggi-do Province and to clarify the distribution of some specificated taxa of the Korea. Daebu-do Island, Mt. Taewha, Mt. Hwaya, Mt. Gumdan, Mt. Chilhyun and Mt. Chulma among eighth grade-area of the Degree of Green Naturality (DGN) within the boundary of the Gyounggi-do Province were visited to investigate local flora. The number of identified vascular plant species were as follow; Mt. Hwaya: 120 species (99 genera of 67 families), Mt. Teawha: 132 species (103 genera of 56 families), Daebu-do Island: 124 species (103 genera of 50 families), Mt. Chulma: 129 species (99 genera of 67 families), Mt. Gumdan: 121 species (96 genera of 52 families), Mt. Chilyun: 90 species (74 genera of 42 families). The endemic Clematis brachyura Maxim. was found to distribute Daeby-do. It seemed that plantation was occupying large area in forest of the Gyounggi-do Province. Forty two specificated taxa were identified and 3 taxa, 10 taxa, 5 taxa, and 24 taxa were sorted into forth grade, third grade, second grade, and first grade respectively. Mt. Taewha showed the highest record (16 taxa) in the number of specificated taxa, Mt. Hwaya was the next with 13 taxa. Mt, Chulma (12 taxa), Mt. Gumdan (11 taxa), Daebu-do Island (7 taxi), and Mt, Chylma (4 taxi) followed. Mt. Taewa and Mt. Whaya were found to be relatively higher in the score calculated front the specificated taxa distribution, while Daebu-do Island and Mt. Chilyun were lower, that difference was probably due in part to consequences of severe disturbance of human activities. With respect to the consequences of severe disturbance of human activities. With respect to the geographical proximity to the Gangwon Province, Mt. Hwaya showed higher similarity of the species composition to that of the Mt. Jumbong.

        This study was carried out to investigate the flora of Mts. Dae-am, Dae-woo, Baek-suk, and Sa-myung located on the east side of DMZ in province Yang-gu-gun, from July 1999 to August 2000. Although two hundred and fifty eight vascular plant taxa (70 families 167 genera) were recorded, this was only a part of representatives in this community because of the restrictin of collections within the military zone. The overall forest stand age of this area was 40 to 50 years, but occasionally ca 70 years old trees were found. We reported 11 taxa of the rare and endangered species proposed by the Ministry of Environment in this area. The Yong-neup, the only high altitude (alt. 1,200m) moore in south Korea, are located in the peak of Mt. Dae-am-san. Some species of this moore (Carex chordorrhiza Ehrh., Carex limosa L., and Gentiana jamesii Hemsl.) - were only found in south Korea. This moor would suffer vegetation change by natural moorland succession and human disturbances. The long-term monitoring of variation of annual vegetation, species distribution, numbers and distribution pattern of individuals of rare species are recommended for the wetland conservation.

        This study was carried out to investigate the flora of Mt. Undal (alt. 1,097.2m) located on the northwestern side of province Gyeongsangbuk-do, near Myngyeong-si city, from April 2000 to Sept. 2000. Total number of vascular plants discovered in Mt. Undal were 70 families, 154 genera, and 243 taxa(including species, subspecies, varieties and forma). Major vegetation was Acer pictum var. mono - Quercus mongolica - Carpinus laxiflora community. The overall forest stand age of this area was 40 to 50 years, and occasionally ca 70 years old Abies holophylla trees were found. Although, there were no rare and endangered speices, we found two species of level IV by the Ministry of Environment - Anemone koraiensis Nakai, Anemone reflexa. Steph. et Willd.

        In this paper we have studied a middleware construction for an effective medical data communication. Brain MR¬images were based on the stroke clinical research system. Our proposed middleware consists of reusable sources at each separated functions. A measurement communication access time by 100 clinical trial medical images we obtained an effective result significantly. In the future this middleware importance will be increased to the medical database construction.

        Effect of Korean Herbal Formula (Modified Ojayeonjonghwan) on Androgen Receptor Expression in an Aging Rat Model of Late Onset Hypogonadism

        Purpose: Testosterone replacement therapy is an effective treatment for late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) despite a few con-traindications and side-effects. The aim of this study was to determine whether modified Ojayeonjonghwan (KH-204, Korean herbal formula) improved LOH. KH-204 is a strong antioxidant herbal formula. We evaluated the effect of Korean herbal pre-scription on androgen receptor (AR) expression in an aged rat model of LOH. Materials and Methods: Eighteen-month-old rats were used as aged LOH rat models. Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were ran-domly divided into three equal groups of six animals each and treated with one of the following: 1) normal control group (oral administration with distilled water, n=6), 2) KH-204 200 group (oral administration with 200 mg/kg of KH-204, n=6), and 3) KH-204 400 group (oral administration with 400 mg/kg of KH-204, n=6). After four weeks of treatment (once daily, distilled water or KH-204), serum testosterone levels, changes in testicular and epididymal weight, Western blotting analysis of AR ex-pression and measurement of oxidative stress were examined. Results: Treatment with the herbal formulation KH-204 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg (1) increased the weights of testis and epi-didymis; (2) increased the level of serum testosterone; (3) increased the level of superoxide dismutase and reduced the level of 8-hydroxy-20-deoxyguanosine; and (4) upregulated AR expression in testicular tissue. Conclusions: KH-204 might be an effective alternative for LOH. It improves antioxidant mechanisms and increases testicular AR expression without side-effects.

        In this paper, we describe the developing software for breast mass detection and analysis in microwave tomography (MT) as a preliminary study. Our software consists of preprocessing, segmentation, registration, and feature extraction module. In particular, we generated a new template image based on MT to transform individual breast images into a standard anatomical coordinate space. We tested our software on the breast phantom images which were reconstructed from ETRI MT system. The result showed the feasibility of using our software as a computer aided system.

        칼슘이 코팅된 봉지 괘대가 '추황배' 과실의 칼슘함량, 과점 발달 및 과실품질에 미치는 영향

        '추황배'에서 칼슘이 코팅된 이중봉지를 이용하여 봉지 물성, 미기상, 과실로의 칼슘 축적 및 과실품질에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 칼슘처리봉지는 관행봉지와 비교하여 투광율, 인장강도, 온도 및 상대습도는 차이가 없었다. 그러나 칼슘처리 봉지의 과피내 칼슘 함량은 만개 후 65일 부터 160일 까지 관행 봉지보다 현저히 많았다. 그러나 과육에서는 160일에서만 증가되었다. 칼슘처리 농도별 과실내 칼슘함량은 과피에서는 황색이중봉지 12%, 신문이중봉지 9, 12%에서 높았고 과육에서는 황색이중봉지 3%, 신문이중봉지 6, 9, 12%에서 현저히 높았다. 방사성 동위원소를 이용한 과피 및 과실로의 칼슘 축적은 과피는 처리 후 60시간까지 증가였으나 과육 조직은 무처리 과피와 큰 차이는 없었다. 수확시 과실경도는 황색이중봉지는 농도 간 큰 차이는 없었으나, 칼슘 6, 12%처리 신문이중봉지에서 현저한 차이를 보였다. 가용성고형물은 칼슘 6, 9%처리 황색이중봉지와 3, 6, 9%처리 신문이중봉지에서 현저히 높았다. 그러나 봉지내 칼슘처리에 따른 과중 및 과피색 변화는 차이가 없었다. In a pear fruit 'Chuhwangbae' was investigated the effect of the calcium-coated double paper bag on the physical properties of the paper bag, micro meteorological phenomena, and calcium contents in quality of fruit. The calcium-coated paper bag, compared with official paper bags, did not give any effect on light transmission ratio and tensile strength. The change of the inside relative humidity of the paper bag was a little compared with conventional paper bags, but there was no difference in temperature. The contents of the accumulated calcium of the pericarp was remarkably greater than conventional paper bags during the period of 65 days to 160 days after the full bloom, but the flesh remarkably increased at 160 days. The calcium content per concentration of calcium coating greatly increased in 12% of yellow double paper bags and 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the pericarp, and in 3% of yellow double paper bags and 6, 9, 12% of newspaper double paper bags in case of the peri carp. As a result of treatment of a radioactive isotope, the amount of accumulated calcium in the pericarp continued until 60 hours after treatment, but there was no difference in the calcium amount between the flesh and no-treatment peri carp. As to the hardness of fruits at the time of harvest, there was no difference in the concentration in case of a yellow double bags. But newspaper double paper bags 6, 12% was significantly difference. Soluble solid remarkably increased in yellow double paper bags 6, 9% and yellow double paper bags 3, 6, 9%. Also, it did not effect on changes of the pericarp, fruit weight and the color of the pericarp.

      • Self-powered fall detection system using pressure sensing triboelectric nanogenerators

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>With the rapidly increasing number of older people in our societies, fall detection is becoming more important: Older adults may fall at home when they are alone and they may not be found in time for them to get help. In addition, a fall itself can cause serious injuries such as lacerations, fractures and hematomas. Although many previous studies have been reported on various fall detection technologies based on wearable sensors, the inconvenience of wearing them is problematic. Vision or ambient based methods may be alternatives, but high cost and complex installation process limit applicable areas. We propose a cost-effective, ambient-based fall detection system based on a pressure sensing triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) array. Apart from simple observation of output signal waveforms according to different actions, key technologies, including appropriate filtering and distinguishing between falls and daily activities, are demonstrated with data acquisition from 48 daily activities and 48 falls by eight participants. The proposed system achieves a classification accuracy of 95.75% in identifying actual falls. Due to its low cost, easy installation and notable accuracy, the proposed system can be immediately applied to smart homes and smart hospitals to prevent additional injuries caused by falls.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A self-powered fall detection system was demonstrated using a TENG array. </LI> <LI> A statistical study over eight participants was carried out for general application. </LI> <LI> The maximum number of activated cells was used as a feature for classification. </LI> <LI> The proposed fall detection system had a high classification accuracy of 95.75%. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Recent advances in engineering <i>Corynebacterium glutamicum</i> for utilization of hemicellulosic biomass

        <P> <I>Corynebacterium glutamicum</I> has been mainly used for industrial production of amino acids, and in recent years, it has also been successfully engineered to broaden its range of substrate and product profiles. In particular, <I>C. glutamicum</I> has been engineered to use non-natural sugar substrates (mainly pentoses) derived from hemicellulosic feedstock, which is the second abundant component of lignocellulosic biomass. Engineering of the host in this context can greatly contribute to the development of an economic and sustainable bioprocess. The present review focuses on the recent progress in engineering <I>C. glutamicum</I> towards efficient utilization of pentose sugars derived in hemicellulose and for direct utilization of hemicellulose.
