        Tracheal necrosis and stenosis are rare complications of prolonged endotracheal intubation. A 62 years old female was performed cerebral aneurysmal neck clipping under general anesthesia via endotracheal intubation and transferred to the 12th intensive care unit. The patient was mechanically ventilated and tracheostomy was done on the postoperative day. Necrotic tissue, pus and stenosis were found around the ballooning site of the trachea. T-tube insertion was done on the both postoperative day and the patient was discharged on the 80th postoperative day.

        A study of the human skin-whitening effects of resveratryl triacetate.

        <P>Resveratrol has a variety of bioactivities that include its anti-melanogenic effects, but its use in cosmetics has been challenging partly because of its chemical instability. Resveratryl triacetate (RTA) is a prodrug that can enhance stability. The purpose of this study was to examine the skin safety and whitening effects of RTA in human subjects. The primary skin irritation potentials of RTA and resveratrol were tested at 0.1 and 0.5 % on human subjects. Resveratrol at a concentration of 0.5 % induced weak skin irritation, whereas RTA did not induce any skin responses. The skin-whitening efficacy of a cosmetic formulation containing 0.4 % RTA was evaluated in two different test models. In the artificial tanning model, the test product and the control product were applied twice daily to the skin of the forearms of 22 human subjects after pigmentation induction by ultraviolet irradiation. Applying the test and the control products to the artificial tanning model for 8 weeks increased the individual topology angles (ITA) by 17.06 and 13.81 %, respectively, a difference that was statistically significant (p < 0.05). In the hyperpigmentation model, the test product and the control product were applied twice daily to the faces of 21 human subjects. The averaged intensity of the hyperpigmented spots decreased by 2.67 % in the test group and 1.46 % in the control group, a difference that was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Therefore, RTA incorporated into cosmetic formulations can whiten human skin without inducing skin irritation.</P>

      • Excitatory neuron–specific SHP2-ERK signaling network regulates synaptic plasticity and memory

        <P><B>Cell type–specific RASopathy</B></P><P>The neurodevelopmental disorder Noonan syndrome is often caused by activating mutations in the phosphatase SHP2 that enhance RAS signaling. However, SHP2 is present in multiple neuron types as well as glia; thus, where the mutant protein has its pathological effects is unclear. Ryu <I>et al.</I> examined one NS-associated SHP2 mutation in isolated cell types from mice and determined that its presence in only excitatory neurons resulted in electrophysiological and cognitive effects. This was because certain adaptor proteins that interact with SHP2 to mediate RAS signaling are abundant in excitatory but not inhibitory neurons. These findings reveal that cell type–specific variations within the RAS signaling network underlie the phenotypes of NS and possibly other “RASopathies”.</P><P>Mutations in RAS signaling pathway components cause diverse neurodevelopmental disorders, collectively called RASopathies. Previous studies have suggested that dysregulation in RAS–extracellular signal–regulated kinase (ERK) activation is restricted to distinct cell types in different RASopathies. Some cases of Noonan syndrome (NS) are associated with gain-of-function mutations in the phosphatase SHP2 (encoded by <I>PTPN11</I>); however, SHP2 is abundant in multiple cell types, so it is unclear which cell type(s) contribute to NS phenotypes. Here, we found that expressing the NS-associated mutant SHP2<SUP>D61G</SUP> in excitatory, but not inhibitory, hippocampal neurons increased ERK signaling and impaired both long-term potentiation (LTP) and spatial memory in mice, although endogenous SHP2 was expressed in both neuronal types. Transcriptomic analyses revealed that the genes encoding SHP2-interacting proteins that are critical for ERK activation, such as GAB1 and GRB2, were enriched in excitatory neurons. Accordingly, expressing a dominant-negative mutant of GAB1, which reduced its interaction with SHP2<SUP>D61G</SUP>, selectively in excitatory neurons, reversed SHP2<SUP>D61G</SUP>-mediated deficits. Moreover, ectopic expression of GAB1 and GRB2 together with SHP2<SUP>D61G</SUP> in inhibitory neurons resulted in ERK activation. These results demonstrate that RAS-ERK signaling networks are notably different between excitatory and inhibitory neurons, accounting for the cell type–specific pathophysiology of NS and perhaps other RASopathies.</P>

        시판 멸치액젓의 품질평가 방법에 관한 연구

        시판 멸치액젓의 객관적 품질평가 및 그 기준에 대한 기초자료를 제시하고자 현재 국내에서 유통되는 6개사 멸치액젓의 미생물학적, 화학적, 물성학적 및 관능적 품질특성을 검토하였다. 식염농도의 경우 시판제품 모두 품질 규격보다 높게 나타났고, 수분함량 및 pH의 경우 적합하였다. 아미노태 질소, 휘발성 염기태 질소 및 TMA도 제품간의 함량 범위가 다양하게 나타났으며, 시판 제품중에는 아미노태 질소 함량이 규격치에 도달하지 못하고 관능적으로 부적합한 제품이 유통되는 것으로 나타났다. 미생물의 경우 식품에 존재시 위해 가능성이 있는 병원성 세균이 검출되어 품질의 안정화를 위한 위생화 기술이 요구되었다. 관능검사와의 상관관계에서 아미노태질소, 휘발성 염기태질소 및 물리적 특성인 점도가 상관성이 큰 것으로 나타나 품질평가의 기준으로 적합하였다. Commercially distributed salted and fermented anchovy sauces in Korea were purchased from six different companies. Microbiological, chemical, rheological and sensory analyses were carried out to evaluate the quality and safety and to provide basic information of the products. The salinity of every product was lower than that of regulatory standard. All samples tested had acceptable in moisture content and pH. However, wide range of amino nitrogen (AN), volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), and trimethylamine (TMA) contents were observed. One product among tested had lower level of AN than regulatory standard. Pathogenic micro- organisms were also detected from the samples, therefore sanitation procedure will be needed to ensure safety. From the results, AN, VBN, and viscosity were highly correlated to sensory scores, suggesting that these values can be utilized as a standard method to evaluate quality of the salted and fermented anchovy sauce.

        한국여성에서 자간전증과 peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase 유전자 다형성의 연관성

        목적: 자간전증의 발병기전에 관여할 것으로 예측되는 PPARγ와 MTHFR 유전자의 단일염기다형성 및 일배체형과 한국인에서 자간전증의 연관성을 분석하고자 하였다. 연구 방법: 자간전증 환자 226명과 대조군 235명을 대상으로 하여 말초혈액검체에서 DNA를 추출하였고, PPARγ(-796A>G, P12A (C>G), H447H (161C>T)), MTHFR (A222V (677C>T), E429A (1298A>C), R594Q (1793G>A)) 유전자의 단일염기다형성의 유전자형은 SNaPShot assay kit를 이용한 single base primer extension assay로 분석하였다. 결과는 Student`s t-test, 카이제곱검정, 선형회귀분석으로 분석하였고, 일배체형 분석은 Haploview 3.2 version을 이용하여 수행하였다. 결과: 대상 환자들에서 PPARγ, MTHFR 유전자의 대립유전자 빈도 및 유전자형 빈도는 환자군과 대조군 간에 유의한 차이가 없었고 (p>0.05), PPARγ와 MTHFR의 단일염기다형성들의 유전자형은 자간전증 위험에 있어 유의한 차이가 없었다(p>0.05). PPARγ과 MTHFR 유전자의 단일염기다형성들 중 MTHFR 유전자의 3가지 단일염기다형성 677C>T, 1298A>C, 1793G>A 사이에 서로 강한 연관불균형을 보였으나 (Lod score>2.0), MTHFR 유전자의 TAG, CAG, CCA, CCG 일배체형의 유전자형의 분포는 환자군과 대조군 간에 유의한 차이가 없었고 (p>0.05) 자간전증 위험에 있어 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 없었다 (p>0.05). 결론: 이상의 결과를 통해 한국인에서 PPARγ과 MTHFR의 유전자다형성은 자간전증과 연관성이 없었고 이들의 일배체형도 연관성이 없었다. Objective: To investigate whether polymorphisms of genes encoding peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) are associated with preeclmapsia in Korean women and also to demonstrate whether there is any haplotypic association between preeclampsia and those genes. Methods: DNA was extracted from whole blood of 226 preeclampsia patients and 235 healthy pregnant women. The genotypes of SNPs in PPARγ (-796A>G, P12A (C>G), H447H (161C>T)) and MTHFR (A222V (677C>T), E429A (1298A>C), R594Q (1793G>A)) were analyzed by a single base primer extension assay using a SNaPShot assay kit. Results were analyzed with the Student`s t-test, Chi-square test, and Logistic regression analysis. Haplotype analyses were performed using Haploview 3.2 version. Results: There were no significant differences in genotype or allele frequencies of PPARγ and MTHFR gene polymorphisms between preeclampsia patients and controls (p>0.05). No increase in the risk of preeclampsia for those genes was observed under any model of inheritance. Among SNPs of the PPARγ, MTHFR genes, only SNPs in MTHFR gene (677C>T, 1298A>C, 1793G>A) were in a strong linkage disequilibrium with each other (Lod score>2.0), but there were no significant differences in genotype distribution of haplotypes of MTHFR gene (TAG, CAG, CCA, CCG) between preeclampsia patients and controls (p>0.05). No statistically significant associations were observed between any haplotypes of MTHFR gene and preeclampsia risk. Conclusion: This study suggest that SNPs in PPARγ and MTHFR gene were not associated with preeclampsia in Korean women, and its haplotypes were also not associated with preeclampsia.

        Case Report : Severe ischemic bowel necrosis caused by terlipressin during treatment of hepatorenal syndrome

        Terlipressin is a vasopressin analogue that is widely used in the treatment of hepatorenal syndrome or variceal bleeding. Because it acts mainly on splanchnic vessels, terlipressin has a lower incidence of severe ischemic complications than does vasopressin. However, it can still lead to serious complications such as myocardial infarction, skin necrosis, or bowel ischemia. Herein we report a case of severe ischemic bowel necrosis in a 46-year-old cirrhotic patient treated with terlipressin. Although the patient received bowel resection, death occurred due to ongoing hypotension and metabolic acidosis. Attention should be paid to patients complaining of abdominal pain during treatment with terlipressin.

        광촉매를 이용한 Humic Acid 광분해시 공존물질이 광분해에 미치는 영향

        This study aimed at improving the TiO₂ photocatalytic degradation of HA. A set of tests was first conducted in the dark to study the adsorption of HA at different coexisting material concentration. Adsorption rate increased with adding cation ion but decreased with adding bicarbonate ion. The photodegradation of HA in the presence of UV irradiation was investigated as a function of different experimental condition : initial concentration of HA, TiO₂ weight, pH, air flow rate and coexisting material. It was increased either at low pH or by adding cation ion. The increase of cation strength in aqueous solution could provide a favorable condition for adsorption of HA on the TiO₂ surface and therefore enhance the photodegradation rate. It was found that bicarbonate ions slowed down the degradation rate by scavening the hydroxyl radicals.

        The Influence of Transformational Leadership Exhibited by Organizational Leaders on Organizational Commitment : Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Knowledge Management Activities

        본 연구는 상사의 변혁적 리더십이 지식경영활동과 조직몰입에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하였으며, 상사의 변혁적 리더십과 조직몰입의 관계에서 지식경영활동이 매개효과를 나타내는지를 분석한 실증연구이다. 이를 위한 연구방법으로서 본 논문은 서비스/제조/IT 대기업 종사자 635명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였고, 이를 토대로 산업별 변수간의 관계에 대하여 비교·분석하였다. 본 연구에서 사용한 용어에 대한 정의를 살펴보면, 변혁적 리더십은 목표달성에 그치지 않고 변화와 혁신을 추구하며, 조직구성원들이 지니고 있는 잠재적 역량과 강점을 개발하고 자신감과 열정을 증대시키며, 긍정적 강점을 자극하여 기대했던 것보다 높은 성과를 달성하도록 한다. 이러한 변혁적 리더십은 조직유효성을 증진시키는 선행요인으로 중요하게 인지되었다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 상사의 변혁적 리더십이 지식경영활동에 모두 유의한정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 상사의 변혁적 리더십이 조직몰입에 모두 유의한 정(+)의영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 지식경영활동도 조직몰입에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로나타났다. 넷째, 상사의 변혁적 리더십이 조직몰입간에 지식경영활동의 매개역할에 관해서 부분매개효과를나타내는 것으로 분석되었다. 다섯째, 각 집단별로 분석해보면 상사의 변혁적 리더십이 지식경영활동에 미치는 영향에서는 서비스업이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났으며, 지식경영활동이 조직몰입에 미치는 영향에서도서비스업이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 또한 상사의 변혁적 리더십이 조직몰입에 미치는 영향에서는 IT업이 가장 큰 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 위와 같은 분석결과를 토대로, 변혁적 리더십이 지식경영활동과조직몰입에 미치는 영향에 대한 결과의 의미와 산업별 차이에 대한 의미를 중심으로 시사점을 논의하였고연구의 한계점도 제시하였다. This empirical study analyzed the influence of transformational leadership on knowledge management activities and organizational commitment, and examined the mediating effect of knowledge management in the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational commitment. A survey was employed as the research method. The survey targeted 635 participants working in the service, manufacturing, and IT industries. The results were used to compare and analyze the relationships among industry-specific variables. Transformational leadership is defined as the tendency to strive for change and innovation despite the achievement of objectives, develop the potential capabilities and strengths that each member of the organization possesses, amplify their self-esteem and passion, and lead them to surpass their expected objectives by stimulating positive strengths. Such type of leadership has been perceived as a precedent that enhances organizational effectiveness. In summary, this study has yielded the following results: First, the transformational leadership exhibited by organizational leaders was found to have a significant positive impact on knowledge management activities as well as organizational commitment. Second, knowledge management activities were found to have a significant positive influence on organizational commitment. Third, the transformational leadership exhibited by organizational leaders was found to have a partial mediating effect on the mediating role of knowledge management activities in the relationship with organizational commitment. Fourth, analyzing industry-wise, the influence of transformational leadership on knowledge management activities was the most significant in the service industry, which was also the case for the influence of knowledge management activities on organizational commitment. The influence of leaders’ transformational leadership on organizational commitment was the most significant in the information technology industry. Finally, based on the aforementioned research results, suggestions were made regarding the meaning of the influence of transformational leadership on knowledge management activities and organizational commitment and the differences by industry thereof, while also suggesting the limitations of this work.
