Marine sponges are known to produce a number of cytotoxic secondary metabolites. In the course of searching for cytotoxic metabolites from marine organisms, we have evaluated cytotoxic activities of six marine secondary metabolites isolated from various sponges. The cytotoxic compounds 1~6 were isolated by the application of various chromatographic methods, including column chromatography and HPLC. The molecular structures were mostly determined using mass spectrometry (MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy. Furanosestererpenes (compounds 1~3) from Psammocinia sp., cyclitol derivatives (compounds 4 and 5) from Sarcotragus sp., and bromotyrosine-type compound (6) from an association of two sponges Jaspis wondoensis and Poecillastra wondoensis were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against three cancer cell lines; Hep G2, HeLa, and MCF-7. All tested compounds exhibited cyctoxicity at concentrations ranging from 5 ㎍/mL to 25 ㎍/mL. Particularly, among the tested compounds, compound 6 showed the highest potency displaying at least 80% of cytotoxicity at 5 ㎍/mL level against all three cancer cell lines.
Opuntia humifusa Ameliorated Cerulein-Induced Acute Pancreatitis

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Opuntia humifusa (OH) on cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis (AP). METHODS: Acute pancreatitis was induced via intraperitoneal injection of cholecystokinin analog cerulein (50 μg/kg). In the OH pretreatment group, OH was administered intraperitoneally (100, 250, or 500 mg/kg) 1 hour before first cerulein injection. In the posttreatment group, OH was administered intraperitoneally (500 mg/kg) 1 hour after the first cerulein injection. Furthermore, we isolated the pancreatic acinar cells using collagenase method, then investigated the acinar cell viability, cytokine productions, and the regulating mechanisms. RESULTS: The both pretreatment and posttreatment of OH treatment attenuated the severity of AP, as shown by the histology of the pancreas and lung, and inhibited neutrophil infiltration; serum amylase and lipase activities; proinflammatory cytokine expression such as interleukin 1, interleukin 6, and tumor necrosis factor α; and cell death including apoptosis and necrosis. Furthermore, OH inhibited the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that OH reduces the severity of AP by inhibiting acinar cell death through c-Jun N-terminal kinases.

<P>Protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) is considered as a therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. In our preliminary screening study, a MeOH extract of the aerial part of <I>Siegesbeckia glabrescens</I> was found to inhibit PTP1B activity at 30 μg/mL. Bioassay‐guided fractionation led to the isolation of two active diterpenes, <I>ent</I>-16&bgr;H,17-isobutyryloxy-kauran-19-oic acid (<B>1</B>) and <I>ent</I>-16&bgr;H,17-acetoxy-18-isobutyryloxy-kauran-19-oic acid (<B>2</B>), along with <I>ent</I>-16&bgr;H,17-hydroxy-kauran-19-oic acid (<B>3</B>). Compounds <B>1</B> and <B>2</B> inhibited the PTP1B activity with IC<SUB>50</SUB> values of 8.7 ± 0.9 and 30.6 ± 2.1 μM, respectively. Kinetic studies suggest that both <B>1</B> and <B>2</B> are non-competitive inhibitors of PTP1B. However, compound <B>3</B> substituted with a hydroxyl group at C-17 in kaurane-type showed no inhibitory effects towards PTP1B.</P>

An embedded system requires test process for reality of the system. For this, it is important to test exception handling which programmer developed. Especially, embedded system is required to test input from hardware device and external signal. But, manual test is required much time and low reality. And it is hard to reproduce faulty situation for debugging. In this paper, we propose a new exception handling test criteria for an embedded system. For this criteria, we define exception type and test exception handling using fault injection technique. And we propose generation of test data for occurring exception situation.

Eco Drive indicating system lets driver know whether car is operating in fuel-efficient state or not, so that the driver is guided to save fuel. Eco Drive state is distinguished based on A/T shift pattern data, engine operating status, transmission operating status. With Eco Drive indicating system, it was proved that fuel-efficiency can be increased by 4~26%.

Background Mulberry ( Morus alba L.) leaves is a Korean medicinal herb that shows bioactive compounds such as quercetin, anthocyanins and polysaccharides. Bioconversion with Viscozyme L process could be producing enriched physiologically active compounds of mulberry leaves. Objective Thus, this study focused on the purifi cation of the bioconverted compounds responsible for ethyl acetate extraction and column chromatography using normal-phase silica gel and Sephadex LH-20. Results In this study, we obtained the purifi ed compounds, MAV 1, MAV 2 and MAV 3, which were identifi ed as caff eic acid, quercetin, and kaempferol, by analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Also, we optimized the yield of the most active compound, quercetin in 20% substrate, 5% enzyme, at 37 °C and pH 4 for 24 h, 2.34 ± 0.03 mg of quercetin was produced from 1 g of dried mulberry leaves. Furthermore, we showed that bioconverted compounds have biological activities such as α-glucosidase, acetylcholinesterase inhibitory, cytotoxicity activity, tyrosinase, xanthine oxidase (XO) and pancreatic lipase inhibition. Conclusion These results indicate that the enhanced activities of α-glucosidase, tyrosinase, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities, and the anti-oxidant properties bioconverted from mulberry leaves with Viscozyme L. One of them, the quercetin which is a potent α-glucosidase inhibitor bioconverted from mulberry leaves with Viscozyme L has an anti-diabetic eff ect. And it can be used for the development of health foods and pharmaceutical products.

The main goal of standardization on diagnostic specification is to achieve the reusability of diagnostic program. Reusability is connected with the reliability and cost reduction including delivery time. DIMS was developed to attain these goals through reducing the efforts for standardization verification and coding works. The XML-based database structure and auto-generation method of DIMS enable these features. As a result, through DIMS, the reliable diagnostic program can be obtained cost-efficiently in an early stage.

In addition a suggested system improve system reliability depending on using learned value that can be monitored the motor characteristic changes or the friction force changes of glass rubber etc.
