Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disorder of unknown etiology characterized by presence of gastrointestinal symptoms, eosinophilic infiltratio n of one or more parts of gastrointestinal tract without involvement of other organs and absence of parasitic infestation. The clinical presentation depends on the extents and depths of eosinophilic infiltration. Mucosal involvement may result in abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss. We report a case of eosinophilic enterocolitis in a 55-year-old female presented with abdominal pain and watery diarrhea resulting in recurrent acute renal failure.

To evaluate the clinical significance of serum type N collagen levels in patients with various liver diseases, serum type IV collagen levels were measured by one-step sandwich enzyme immunoassay using monoclonal antibodies in 80 patients from December 1993 to December 1994 at Chung Nam National University Hospital. The results were as follows : 1. Mean age of patients was 45 years. Men was 2.1 times more than women. 2. Compared to 15 normal controls(159.9±34.0 ng/ml), serum type IV collagens were significantly elevated in patients with chronic hepatitis (254.5±158.0 ng/ml), liver cirrhosis(281.0±195.7 ng/ml) and hepatocellular carcinoma(420.5±241.4 ng/ml) (p<0.005). 3. Serum type IV collagen levels were increased without significance in patients with alcholic liver cirrhosis(331.6±244.5 ng/ml) compared to non-alcholic cirrhosis(230.4±117.8 ng/ml. p>0.05). 4. The serum levels of type IV collagen were not correlated with the levels of alanine amino-trnasferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP). The results suggest that the serum type IV collagen levels correlate well with the degree of progression of chronic liver diseases. Therefore the measurement of serum type IV collagen is relatively simple and useful method to reflect the progression of chronic liver diseases.

In 58 patients who were admitted to department of internal medicine, ChungNam national university hospital from January 1989 to March, 1993. We evaluated for medical treatments and the following results were obtained. 1) The ratio of male and female was 1 : 1 and mean age of the patients was 57.4 years. 2) At arrival on hospital, the most common clinical symptom was pain in right upper quadrant and epigastrium(93.1%), the remainders were fever and chill(79.3%), nausea(51.7%) and vomiting(36.2 %) in order of frequency. 3) The most common physical findings was tenderness on the right upper quadrant and epaigastrium(98%), the remainders were jaundice(50%) and palpable gall bladder(13.8%) in order of freguency. 4) In laboratory examination, elevated levels of ESR(82.8%), leukocytosis(67.2%), elevated levels of AST(62.0%), ALT(50.0%), serum total bilirubin(51.7%) and alkaline phosphatase (43.1%) were noted. 5) The mean period of NPO was 3.9 days and the mean hospital period was 13.5 days. 6) The rates of combined complications in patients with acute cholecystitis were 17.2%; these are gall bladder empyema(5.2%), hydrops(5.2%), perforation(3.4%), sepsis(3.4%) and intestinal obstruction (1.7%). 7) In 96.6 percent of 58 cases, the symptoms of acute cholecystitis were improved by conservative management. 8) The mean follow-up period was 25.5 months and the recurrence rate was 10% during this period.

<P>Previous studies have suggested that there is a genetic basis to restless legs syndrome (RLS) development. Occurrence of antipsychotic-induced RLS could also be due to differences in genetic susceptibility. We investigated whether CLOCK and NPAS2 gene polymorphisms are associated with RLS in schizophrenic patients on antipsychotics because RLS symptoms usually manifest during the evening and night. We assessed symptoms of RLS in 190 Korean schizophrenic patients on antipsychotics and divided the subjects into two groups according to the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group diagnostic criteria: (i) subjects who met all the criteria and (ii) the remaining subjects who did not meet all the criteria. We found a significant difference in the number of subjects with different genotype and allele carrier frequencies for the CLOCK gene (rs2412646) between the two groups (p = 0.031 and 0.010, respectively). Distribution of CLOCK haplotypes (rs2412646-rs1801260) was significantly different between schizophrenic patients with and without RLS (p = 0.021). However, the distributions of allelic, genotypic, and haplotypic variants of NPAS2 (rs2305160 and rs6725296) were not significantly different between the two groups. Our results suggest that CLOCK polymorphisms are associated with increased susceptibility of schizophrenic patients to RLS. We hypothesize that RLS in schizophrenia patients treated with antipsychotics may be a very mild akathisia that manifests during the night and is under control of circadian oscillation.</P>

기포탑 반응기에서의 기체 체류량은 기포의 크기 분포 및 상승 속도와 밀접한 연관성을 갖는다. 따라서 많은 연구 자들에 의하여 기포탑 반응기 내에 기포의 크기를 제어하기 위한 연구들이 진행되어 왔다. 본 연구에서는 스파져 이외 의 영역에서도 기포의 거동을 제어하고 기체 체류량을 증진시키기 위하여 다단형 기포탑 반응기를 사용하였다. 특히, 3 종류의 서로 다른 크기의 반응기를 사용하여 다단 다공판이 기포의 유동 특성에 미치는 효과를 확인하였다. 나아가 개별 기포가 다공판을 통과하였을 때의 쪼개짐 빈도수 및 크기 분포 변화에 대하여 관찰함으로써 다공판의 영향에 대 한 이해를 넓혔다. 또한 다양한 다공판 배치 형태에 따른 유동 특성을 관찰함으로써 다단형 기포탑 반응기에서의 다공 판 설치에 대한 기준을 제시할 수 있었으며, 이를 바탕으로 높이 22 m, 직경 0.36 m의 벤치 스케일 다단형 기포탑 반 응기를 제작하여 그 성능을 확인하였다. The gas hold-up has a strong relationship with the size distribution and rising velocities of bubbles in a bubble column. Therefore, many previous researchers have studied on the hydrodynamics focusing on the bubble size variation in bubble column. In this study, the bubble behavior was influenced by partitioning porous plates installed at a certain height in a trayed bubble column. The gas hold-up was increased in non-sparging region (H/D > 5) as well as sparging region. We identified the effect of the partitioning porous plate using three trayed bubble columns with different reactor geometries. Furthermore, the bubble break-up frequency and size distribution were observed before and after individual bubbles penetrated through the plate. The arrangement of the plates was also investigated using a 0.15-m-in-diameter bubble column. Based on the result, we applied this design concept to a 0.36-m-in-diameter, 22 m tall trayed bubble column and identified the effect of the partitioning porous plate on the gas hold-up increase.

슬러리 기포탑 반응기는 열 및 물질 전달의 용이성, 낮은 운전비용 및 장치의 간단성의 장점을 가지고 있어서 Fischer-Tropsch 반응, bio-reaction 등에 많이 응용되고 있다. 특히, 반응물은 기체 상태로 반응기에 투입이 되는데, 이 기포입자의 상승하는 힘을 바탕으로 기상/액상/고상이 균일하게 혼합되게 된다. 많은 연구자들이 이러한 기포탑 반응기의 성능을 개선하고자, 다양한 반응기 디자인에 대하여 보고하고 있다. 특히 반응기 내부에 tray를 설치함으로써, 기포 포집율을 증진시기고 액상의 역류를 최소화시키는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는, 다양한 기공크기를 갖는 tray를 활용함으로써 높이에 따른 기포 포집율의 변화 및 반응기 내에 기포 입자의 거동 특성에 대하여 살펴보았다.

A rapid, sensitive and selective analytical method was developed and validated for the determination of compound K, a major intestinal bacterial metabolite of ginsenosides in human plasma. Liquid-liquid extraction was used for sample preparation and analysis, followed by liquid chromatography tandem spectrometric analysis and an electrospray-ionization interface. Compound K was analyzed on a Phenomenex Luna C18 column (100×2.00 mm, 3 μm) with the mobile phase run isocratically with 10 mM ammonium acetate-methanol-acetonitrile (5:47.5:47.5, v/v/v) at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. The method was validated for accuracy (relative error <12.63%), precision (coefficient of variation <9.14%), linearity, and recovery. The assay was linear over the entire range of calibration standards i.e., a concentration range of 1 ng/mL to 1,000 ng/ mL (r² >0.9968). The recoveries of compound K after liquid-liquid extraction at 1, 2, 400, and 800 ng/mL were 106.00±0.08%, 103.50±0.19%, 111.45±5.21%, and 89.62±34.46% for intra-day and 85.40±0.08%, 94.50±0.09%, 112.50±5.21%, and 95.87±34.46% for inter-day, respectively. The lower limit of quantification of the analytical method of compound K was 1 ng/ mL in human plasma. The developed method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of compound K after oral administration in ten of healthy human subjects.
