        Horizontal Movement in Korean Traditional Music : Analysis of Sngkn Kim’s Taegŭm Quartet 20064 8)

        본 논문은 한국전통음악의 현대화 작업에 집중한 한국 작곡가 김승근의 작품 분석을 기반으로 하였다. 이 작곡가는 학창 시절 한국 전통 관악기인 대금을 배운 경험을 바탕으로 일찍이 연주자의 관점에서 음악창작을 하는 데에 관심을 기울여 왔다. 연주 경험을 통해 배운 전통 음악을 최대한 존중한 창의적 해석은 그의 작품에서 두드러지게 나타나는 특징이다. 김승근의 작품 ≪대금 사중주 2006≫은 한국 전통 곡인 ≪수제천≫에서 요소를 담아왔다. 그는 본인의 곡 안에서 평행하게 움직이는 악기군과 각각의 악기를 통해 보여지는 세밀한 음색과 음고의 변화는 ≪수제천≫에서 보여지는 선율에 영감을 받아 작곡하였다고 주장한다. 본 논문은 김승근의 ≪대금 사중주 2006≫을 한국전통 음악을 기반으로한 또 다른 작곡가인 윤이상의 곡과 비교 하여 분석해보고자 한다. 윤이상(1\917–1995)은 독일에 상주하면서 ‘아시아의 소리’를 현대 음악을 통해 재현해 내었다는 명성을 지니고 있는 세계적인 작곡가이다. ≪대금 사중주 2006≫은 ≪수제천≫이 가지고 있는 전통적인 개념을 기반으로 구조로서의 거시적 요소와 선율을 구성하는 미시적 요소로 이루어져 있다. 윤이상의 작품의 경우 김승근 작곡가의 미시적 요소의 대칭되는 부분으로서 주요음(Haupttön)이 쓰였다. 윤이상 작품에서 보여지는 거시적 장치로서의 수직적인 화음 구성은 유럽 아방가르드 음악의 영향을 받은 것으로써 각각의 악기 군이 가지고 있는 평행적 운동을 강조한 김승근의 작품과는 대조된다. 김승근은 선율의 수평적 운동이야 말로 한국 전통 음악이 가지고 있는 특징 중 하나라 주장하며 자신의 특성을 규정한다. 더불어 그는 한국 전통 음악의 새로운 응용은 직접적으로 배운 경험을 바탕으로 한, 음악적 뿌리에 대한 심도 있는 이해를 기반으로 이루어져야 한다는 사실을 작품으로 증명해 준다. This paper will analyse a Korean composer who is devoted to new music for Korean traditional music, Sngkn Kim (b.1967). The composer had also studied the taegŭm (Korean transverse flute) and has developed an understanding of the performer’s perspectives on music making. The intimate relationship between musicians and music opened his eyes to the contexts within which performances actually takes place. His composition, Taegŭm Quartet 2006 (2006), draws on elements from the traditional piece, Sujech’ŏn, dating from the Chosŏn dynasty (1392–1910). The concept of time in the piece, particularly interested him; slow tempos allowed the parallel movement of instrumental clusters which had formed through subtle changes of timbre and pitch. I will compare the Taegum Quartet 2006, with Sujech’ŏn as a historical source and with Isang Yun’s compositions. Isang Yun (1917–1995), was the most famous Korean composer of the post-war generation. Yun, who studied Western art music and settled in Germany, gained an international reputation as a composer who created an Asian ‘tone’. Taegŭm Quartet 2006 uses the philosophical foundation of Sujech’ŏn, as it connects melodic components with the overall structure of the entire piece. The Haupttön (main tones) technique of Isang Yun can also be applied on the larger scale. However, Yun’s perception on the vertical movement of harmonic structures is based on the European avant-garde and this challenges horizontal movements of individual tones. Sngkn Kim is critical of Yun’s ideas on the movement of tones, which he felt were detached from the traditional sounds that form their essence. To Kim, then, the most important factor is a proper understanding of the original context. Korean traditional music must rely on individuals who are willing to accept the tradition as a whole by learning it first-hand, not as fragmented components that assist with some other ideology.

        Characterization of carbon nanofiber (CNF)/polymer composite coated on cotton fabrics prepared with various circuit patterns

        Fabric heating elements with carbon nanofiber (CNF)/Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) composite coated cotton fabrics were prepared with various circuit patterns with the aim of providing more flexible and uniform heating performance compared to conventional fabric heating elements. To investigate the properties of the fabric heating element according to the pattern condition, patterns consisting of 3, 5, and 7 horizontal lines, i.e., P3, P5 and P7, were respectively used; and subsequently, vertical lines were added to the horizontal lines, i.e., 2P3, 2P5 and 2P7, respectively. P0 was used as the referencesample. P0 showed a surface resistance of 1.2 × 103 Ω/sq at a current of 0.85 A and an electric heating temperature of 76.9 °C. P3 and 2P3 showed better electrical and electric heating properties than other samples, showing surface resistance values of 1.0 × 103 and 1.2 × 103 Ω/sq at the current values of 0.20 and 0.25 A, and surface temperatures of 71.8 and 75.7 °C, respectively. Although the currents applied to P3 and 2P3 were lower than that applied to P0, the electrical heating properties were modified to be similar. In terms of mechanical properties and water repellency, it was shown that the coated fabrics had higher values compared to the uncoated fabric. It was thus suggested that a small amount of CNF/PVDF-HFP composite can be used to manufacture an electric heating element with excellent performance.

        Ralstonia solanacearum Type III Effectors with Predicted Nuclear Localization Signal Localize to Various Cell Compartments and Modulate Immune Responses in Nicotiana spp.

        Ralstonia solanacearum (Rso) is a causal agent of bacterial wilt in Solanaceae crops worldwide including Republic of Korea. Rso virulence predominantly relies on type III secreted effectors (T3Es). However, only a handful of Rso T3Es have been characterized. In this study, we investigated subcellular localization of and manipulation of plant immunity by 8 Rso T3Es predicted to harbor a nuclear localization signal (NLS). While 2 of these T3Es elicited cell death in both Nicotiana benthamiana and N. tabacum, only one was dependent on suppressor of G2 allele of skp1 (SGT1), a molecular chaperone of nucleotide-binding and leucine-rich repeat immune receptors. We also identified T3Es that differentially regulate flg22-induced reactive oxygen species production and gene expression. Interestingly, several of the NLS-containing T3Es translationally fused with yellow fluorescent protein accumulated in subcellular compartments other than the cell nucleus. Our findings bring new clues to decipher Rso T3E function in planta.

        Characterization of embroidered textile-based electrode for EMG smart wear according to stitch technique

        This study fabricated and evaluated the textile-type electrodes for application to smartwear that can measure surface electromyography(sEMG). It was manufactured by lock stitch(LS) and moss stitch(MS), and the stitch distance was prepared as 1, 2, or 3 mm. The surface and compression property was measured by using the Kawabata evaluation system, and the sheet resistance and skin-electrode impedance were analyzed. The coefficient of friction(MIU) of the MS was larger than that of the LS. On the other hand, the geometrical roughness(SMD) showed a smaller value. When the same load was applied, the compressive range of the MS was larger than the LS. When it was manufactured as a leg sleeve and worn, the conductive path could be increased as the loops made of conductive yarn become flat as the loops adhere to the skin by the pressure of clothing. Accordingly, the skin-electrode impedance decreased by increasing the area in contact with the skin. As the results of the RMS(root-mean-square), the LS was higher than the MS in a stable. Nevertheless, the SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) value was lower than that of the MS because movement generated noise during operation. Therefore, more stable signal acquisition is possible when applying MS. It is expected that could be applied to producing smartwear for sEMG measurements with superior sEMG signal acquisition performance while having a softer touch and flexibility.

        Prevalence and Incidence of Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder in Korea: Population Based Study

        Background: Although neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is known to be a rare disease, its prevalence and incidence have not yet been studied in Korea. We performed a population-based study to examine the prevalence and incidence of NMOSD in Korea using data from the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) claims database. Methods: Data from 2013 to 2017 were obtained, with a washout period set as 2013 and 2014. The prevalence and incidence of NMOSD in 2016 and 2017 were calculated using population census data. Subjects were divided into 5 groups at 15-year intervals, depending on the age at which the diagnostic code was entered. The relative risk (RR) for each age group was compared with the oldest (≥ 60 years) age group. Results: The overall prevalence was estimated to be 3.36 and 3.56 per 100,000 individuals, with an incidence of 0.41 and 0.65 per 100,000 individuals-year in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The mean age was 43.08 (standard deviation, 14.56) years, and the ratio of male to females was 1:4.7. The incidence was higher in female individuals aged between 30 and 59 years (RR, 2.8–3.05; P < 0.05). Conclusion: Nationwide prevalence of NMOSD in Korea was 3.36 and 3.56/100,000 and its incidence was 0.41 and 0.65/100,000-year in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

        대학의 우수강의 에세이 분석을 통한 비대면 수업 모델 개발

        본 연구에서는 COVID-19로 인한 비대면 수업이 전면적으로 실시된 상황에서 학생들이 인식한 ‘좋은 수업’ 특징을 분석하고 각 요소들 간의 관계를 분석하여 비대면 수업 요소의 구조모형을 도출하고자 하였다. 본 연구 수행을 위하여 2020학년도 서울과 수도권, 충청도 및 경상남도 소재 7개 대학의 ‘좋은강의 에세이’ 혹은 ‘우수강의 에세이’ 총 117개의 자료를 분석하였다. 본 연구에 사용한 분석 방법은 질적연구 중 근거이론이었다. 본 연구결과, 개방 코딩에서 13가지의 요소가 도출되었으며 비대면 수업 요소의 구조모형 인과적 조건, 맥락적 조건, 중재적 조건, 상호작용 요인으로 구분하여 기술하였다. 비대면 수업요소 구조모형의 인과적 조건으로는 수업환경과 학습자 정서 요소, 맥락적 조건으로는 교수자 특성, 중심현상으로는 강의콘텐츠 구성전략, 수업구성전략, 학습촉진 전략, 과제구성 및 제시 전략, 평가전략 요소가 도출되었다. 중재적 조건으로는 피드백 전략, 작용/상호작용 전략으로는 상호작용 요인이 도출되었으며, 마지막으로 결과는 인지적 효과, 정서적 효과, 만족도 요소가 도출되었다. 본 연구결과는 비대면 수업설계, 수업 운영, 성과 목표 등의 강의 전략 수립의 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. The purposes of study were to examine the characteristics of “best lecture” that students perceived under the circumstances of conducting full-scale non-face-to-face classes, and to analyze the relationships between each factor to draw a structural model for the factors of non-face-to-face classes. A total of 117 essays about high quality teaching at seven universities in the areas of Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheong-do and Gyeongsand-do were analyzed. The method for analysis was based on the grounded theory. As a result of analysis, a total of 13 factors were identified using open coding and the structural model for the factors of non-face-to-face classes are as follows. This research draws the factors of the “class environment” and “affective elements of the learners” as a casual conditions of the structural model for the factors of non-face-to-face. It also draws the factors of “characteristics of instructor” as a contextual condition, and “the configuration strategy of class contents”, “instructional design strategy”, “learning facilitation strategy“, ”the task designing and presenting strategy“ and ”the assessment strategy“ as a central phenomenon. It also draws the factor of “feedback strategy” as an intervening condition, “interaction” factor as an action/interactions strategy, and the factors of “cognitive effect”, “affective effect“ and ”the satisfaction level“ as the last consequence. The results are expected to be used as a baseline data in establishing instructional strategy including non-face-to-face instructional design, class operation and performance goal.

      • Next-Generation Polymer-Electrolyte-Membrane Fuel Cells Using Titanium Foam as Gas Diffusion Layer

        <P>In spite of their high conversion efficiency and no emission of greenhouse gases, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) suffer from prohibitively high cost and insufficient life-span of their core component system, the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). In this paper, we are proposing Ti foam as a promising alternative electrode material in the MEA. Indeed, it showed a current density of 462 mA cm<SUP>–2</SUP>, being ca. 166% higher than that with the baseline Toray 060 gas diffusion layer (GDL) (278 mA cm<SUP>–2</SUP>) with 200 ccm oxygen supply at 0.7 V, when used as the anode GDL, because of its unique three-dimensional strut structure promoting highly efficient catalytic reactions. Furthermore, it exhibits superior corrosion resistance with almost no thickness and weight changes in the accelerated corrosion test, as opposed to considerable reductions in the weight and thickness of the conventional GDL. We believe that this paper suggests profound implications in the commercialization of PEMFCs, because the metallic Ti foam provides a longer-term reliability and chemical stability, which can reduce the loss of Pt catalyst and, hence, the cost of PEMFCs.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2014/aamick.2014.6.issue-10/am500962h/production/images/medium/am-2014-00962h_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/am500962h'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
