We report seizure induced brain swelling in three patients. MRI revealed a cortical, subcortical(3/3), and basal ganglia(2/3) high signal intensity on T2- weighted and FLAIR images. The lesion shows low signal on T1-weighted image, and enhanced after contrast administration. Follow up study after 27 days in one case revealed complete resolution of the lesion. The reversible MRI findings may be the results of a local brain swelling, breakdown of blood-brain permeability, and a defect of cerebral autoregulation during seizure activity. The transient nature of such findings have to be considered in the differential diagnosis such as reversible ischemia, migraine, inflammation and infection.

A persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is the most common thoracic venous anomaly. It is a persistent remnant of a vessel that is present as a counterpart of normal right-sided superior vena cava(SVC) in early embryological development but normally disappears later. Its diagnosis can be confirmed by many noninvasive and invasive tests, or it is incidentally diagnosed at insertion into the left subclavian or jugular vein or thoracic surgery. If it is not associated with other congenital cardiac anomalies, it is usually asymptomatic and hemodynamically insignificant. We describe the chest radiograph and CT findings of bilateral SVC with drainage to left superior intercostal vein, hemiazygos, azygos vein and right SVC, and no connection of coronary sinus.

Abstract

This study examined the influence of stabilizers on the solubility and colloidal stability of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) nanosuspended through high pressure homogenization at 70°C. Although homogenization increased the initial BCAA solubility, irrespective of pH (pH 3 or 6), homogenization alone was not sufficient to increase their long-term solubility. The incorporation of stabilizers into nanosuspensions increased the saturation concentration of BCAAs but the effect of stabilizers on the increase in the saturation concentration of BCAAs was more pronounced at pH 6.0. At pH 6, Tween 80 dramatically increased the colloidal stability of the BCAA nanosuspensions, independent of the BCAA:stabilizer ratio but not at pH 3. However, the effect of lysolecithin on the colloidal stability of nanosuspended BCAAs varied depending on pH and BCAA:lysolecithin ratio. In lysolecithin-related nanosuspensions, there was no clear relationship between the colloidal stability and nanosuspension conditions including pH and BCAA:lysolecithin ratio. This study could provide a useful information on stabilizer selection for the development of liquid or colloidal products with improved solubility and colloidal stability of nanosuspended BCAAs.

Highlights

High pressure homogenization alone increased the initial BCAA solubility.

pH is main factor affecting the long-term solubility of nanosuspended BCAAs.

The incorporation of stabilizers increased the saturation concentration of BCAAs.

Stabilizers affected the colloidal stability of BCAA nanosuspensions.

BCAA:stabilizer ratio did not affect the solubility and the colloidal stability.

Abstract

This study confirmed the possibility of biopolymer-type stabilizers to increase the saturation concentration of branched-chain amino acids by preventing their crystallization/precipitation. Although microfluidization increased the initial solubility, it failed to increase the saturation concentration of the branched-chain amino acids. The saturation concentration of the branched-chain amino acids increased from 3.81% to 4.42% and 4.85% after the incorporation of food hydrocolloids and proteins, respectively. However, the branched-chain amino acids:stabilizer ratio did not affect the solubility. In the case of food hydrocolloid-based solutions, crystal formation and growth of branched-chain amino acids occurred during storage, resulting in the precipitation of branched-chain amino acid crystals. However, food proteins effectively increased the stability of the solubilized branched-chain amino acids. The improved solubility and stability of the solubilized branched-chain amino acids could be attributed to interactions between the functional groups (carboxyl, amine, sulfate, aliphatic, aromatic, etc.) of the stabilizer and the branched-chain amino acid molecules.

Highlights

Microfluidization increased the initial solubility of branched-chain amino acids.

Stabilizer increased the saturation concentration of branched-chain amino acids.

Stabilizer type was a main factor to affect the stability of amino acid solutions.

Amino acid:stabilizer ratio did not affect the BCAA solubility.

The solution stability was not affected by amino acid:stabilizer ratio.

Primary intraosseous meningioma of skull is rare, and often confused with a primary bone tumor. We report a case of a 71 years old female patient with an intraosseous calvarial meningioma of frontal bone presenting as a solitary osteolytic skull lesion. Plain skull radiograph, CT and MR images show sharply marginated expansile bony lesion in frontal skull vault, and a small well enhanced soft tissue mass within bone. The mass is extracranially protruded to scalp, and is partially attached to the underlying dura. Outer and inner table of skull vault is slightly bulged out, suggesting intradiploic origin of the tumor. The tumor was treated with surgical excision and cranioplasty. Histological examination revealed fibrous meningioma.

Vertebral epithelioid haemangioendothelioma is a rare bone tumour originating from vascular tissue. We report a case of epithelioid haemangioendothelioma occurring in the lumbar spine of a 60-year-old man. Radiographs revealed an osteolytic lesion in the lumbar spine with marginal sclerosis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a lesion with low signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images and inhomogeneous enhancement on contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images. Excisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of epithelioid haemangioendothelioma.

The sea is stratified with water that has different densities because of pressure, temperature, and salinity. When conducting studies of internal waves in the ocean, the fluid is assumed to have layers that have discrete densities. This assumption is made because it is difficult to achieve layers that exhibit gradual changes in the density of the water. In this study, we used previous studies on ocean waves and their radiation issues in the density layer fluid to investigate the characteristics of internal waves in the ocean and their radiation patterns induced by a moving body in a stratified fluid. We also studied the difference in wave radiation between the density gradient layer and the discrete density layer. We found that the wave radiation patterns depended on the velocity of the moving body and the change in the density of the water. The crest apex shift phenomenon was observed in the density gradient in the layer of fluid.

We describe an intra-articular schwannoma involving the knee, an extremely unusual location for this lesion. This case shares the typical magnetic resonance (MR) findings of neural tumors, but also involves atypical features not previously highlighted, related to its solitary involvement and relatively larger size. Schwannoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of intra-articular masses in the knee joint.
